Remember Carly?
Welp, the babe is like a total health guru.
She?s constantly teaching me about clean eats. For instance, the other day she bought me this organic sauerkraut by Happy Pantry. It was seriously insane- full of green cabbage, kale, dandelion greens, spirulina, & chlorella? She recommended eating the snack whenever I have a salt craving? & now I?m addicted!
Yummers.
Anyway this sex kitten is getting married ( read about her healthy?bachelorette party here ) this weekend so I wanted to feature her tight bod on the blog again. Check out her ten foods she can?t live without:
>> 1.} Kale &?other greens like spinach, arugula, chard, & dandelion greens:
I love all greens but don?t want to bore you, so let?s just talk about kale. Kale is low in calories & high in fiber, helps with detoxification, and keeps the liver healthy. Kale?s also full of iron, lowers cholesterol, & is high in Vitamins A, C, and K. My favorite thing about kale is that it has more calcium per calorie than milk & more protein per ounce than beef! I blend kale with other veggies and fruits daily and it is perfect in a salad or saut?ed with a little olive oil, garlic, and sea salt. For a kale smoothie recipe, click here.
>> 2.} Quinoa:
Quinoa contains almost twice as much fiber as most other grains. Quinoa?s protein-rich & is considered a complete protein because it contains all the essential amino acids. I rarely have a salad these days without adding a little quinoa on top. Try kale, tomatoes, avocado, red onion, quinoa, & maybe a few dried cranberries- easy & delicious! Quinoa tastes good with pretty much everything and get this- you can make it in a rice cooker. Just add water & voila! So cinchy.
>> 3.} Nuts:
Particularly almonds, pistachios, walnuts, & pine nuts. Nuts are high in protein & minerals. In addition, they?re good sources for essential fatty acids that protect your brain, heart, & bones. I love making my own trail mix with shelled pistachios, almonds, dried tart cherries, & dark chocolate chips- all organic, of course. Since nuts are high in calories & fat, make sure to only eat about a handful at a time.
>> 4.} Berries:
Especially blueberries, blackberries, & raspberries! ?Wild berries, ( blueberries in particular ), have high levels of antioxidants. One study found that wild blueberries counteract inflammation & insulin sensitivity, two factors that can contribute to arthritis & diabetes. Always buy organic and from local farmers when possible. I eat a little bowl of fresh berries almost daily?so refreshing & yummy!?For a fun berry recipe, click here.
>> 5.} Dark Chocolate:
Who doesn?t need a little chocolate now & then?! Like most of the other foods I have mentioned, dark chocolate is rich in antioxidants, which help rid the body of free radicals ( free radicals cause aging & cancer ). Dark chocolate?s good for the heart ( can improve blood flow & lower blood pressure ) & good for the brain ( causes the brain to release endorphins, which will make you feel happier )! I love the Endangered Species Chocolate Bars ( which are delicious and give back to help animals ) & also the dark chocolate sea salt almonds from Trader Joe?s. Yum!
>> 6.} Apples:
I love a good apple. Fiji, Honey Crisp, Pink Lady, & Granny Smith are my faves. Apples contain fiber ( four grams per medium apple ). They also are a good source of immune-boosting Vitamin C. Apples satisfy hunger for few calories so they can promote weight loss. Eating apples also help with oral hygiene & heart health. They satisfy my cravings for crunch and sweet at the same time. I eat one daily and crave them. Apples slices are also fun with cheese or almond butter ( click here for a delicious apple snack ). Try this-chop up some apples, celery, & walnuts. Mix together with nonfat vanilla greek yogurt & raisins. Sprinkle cinnamon ( which speeds up the metabolism ) on top. Delish.
?>> 7.} Avocados:
I could write a whole article about all the different ways I eat avocados ( << click here for my favorite avo snack ). I personally love to eat them plain or chopped up with some tomatoes, cilantro, & red onion. Either way, avocados are delicious plus nutritious. One avocado provides the body with Vitamins A, C, E, K, & B6, along with tons of potassium & ?healthy fats?, which are good for the heart. One of the biggest health benefits is that by adding avocado to certain foods, you can improve absorption of other nutrients. Avocado contains all the essential amino acids, which makes it a complete protein. Unlike meat proteins, avocado is easy for the body to digest. And seriously, who doesn?t love guacamole?!
>> 8.} Coconuts:?
Coconuts are a good source of fats, carbohydrates, & omega-3?s. Coconut oil is one of very few sources of lauric acid, which helps your immune system fight bacterial & viral infections. I use coconut oil often for cooking and baking, and keep another jar in the bathroom for a natural skin & hair moisturizer. I love buying young coconuts from Whole Foods, drinking the juice, & eating the meat inside after a workout. I always save a little of the meat to put on top of my dog Mayzie?s food- she?s obsessed with it!
>> 9.} Beets:
Beets are known as nature?s Viagra! Seriously, they contain high amounts of boron, which is a substance that is related to the production of human sex hormones. If that?s not enough of a reason to eat beets, they?re high in iron, fiber, folic acid, & vitamin B. Beets lower the blood pressure & contain tryptophan, which relaxes the mind. I?ve been obsessed with beets for the past couple years, especially since I discovered you can make them in a crockpot! Easy peasy! Just clean the beets, put one to two cups of water in the crockpot, put as many beets as you can in the crockpot, turn on high for four hours & the skin will come right off. Chop & add to arugula, goat cheese, & a few walnuts or pine nuts. My faves are the golden beets.
>> 10.} Lemons:
Lemons are antibacterial, antiviral, & immune boosting. They aid in digestion, clean the liver, & fight infection. I start my day with a cup of warm water with juice from a half of a small lemon ( click here for more deets ). Then I drink two cups of hot green tea ( I love Yogi Tea?s ?Green Tea Blueberry Slim-Life? ) with the other half of the lemon & some honey ( honey is another incredible antiseptic & antioxidant! ).
