Twitter's Sunnyvale Office Is Open And Hiring

twitter logoIt looks like Twitter is now hiring out of its new Sunnyvale, Calif. office. The leasing of an 8,000 square foot office in downtown Sunnyvale was first reported in May ? apparently that should hold between 40 and 50 employees. Now Twitter has posted its first job listing for that location ? it's looking for a "software engineer, core runtime diagnostics." (Apparently the company wants someone "awesome, passionate, and nice," so, y'know, apply accordingly.)

Explosions rock Libya's Benghazi, protesters take to streets

By Feras Bosalum and Ghaith Shennib

TRIPOLI (Reuters) - Explosions rocked the eastern Libyan city of Benghazi on Sunday in what appeared to be attacks on judicial buildings, a security official said, sparking protests a day after more than 1,100 inmates escaped during a prison riot there.

Hundreds of demonstrators gathered in Benghazi's streets denouncing the latest violence, according to residents.

Thirteen people were slightly wounded in one of the blasts which targeted a court in the north of the city, said Interior Ministry spokesman Rami Kaal.

Mohammed al-Hijazy, a spokesman for Benghazi security operations, added: "Assailants threw an explosive device under a car as it was parking in front of the court."

Hijazy said another explosion occurred in front of an office belonging to the justice ministry, but it was not immediately clear what had happened in that incident.

Both blasts happened around the time families were breaking their Ramadan fast.

Residents living near the court said the building, and others nearby, had sustained significant damage. Windows were blasted out and rubble was scattered on the ground.

"It was very loud and I saw the smoke," resident Hassan Bakoush said. "Some balconies of nearby buildings are damaged."

Armed violence and lawlessness, caused in part by militia groups who often do as they please, has hobbled governance in large areas of the oil-producing North African state following the 2011 war that toppled Muammar Gaddafi.

Protesters took to Benghazi's streets shouting anti-government and anti-Muslim Brotherhood slogans, demonstrator Abdulhay Mohammed said, echoing scenes from two days ago.

"We are protesting against weak security. People are angry," he said. "People are shouting 'Benghazi wake up', 'The people want the Muslim Brotherhood out' and 'Zeidan gather your belongings'," he added, referring to Prime Minister Ali Zeidan.

ASSASSINATIONS PROMPT PROTESTS

Hundreds of protesters had attacked the Benghazi and Tripoli offices of Libya's Muslim Brotherhood and the headquarters of a liberal coalition in the capital after demonstrations turned violent late on Friday.

Those protests were prompted by the killing of a prominent political activist and critic of the Brotherhood, Abdelsalam al-Mosmary, shot after leaving a Benghazi mosque. Two military officers were also killed in the city on Friday.

"These were professional killers, not normal criminals," Justice Minister Salah al-Marghani told reporters in Tripoli after visiting Benghazi, referring to Friday's assassinations.

He added that the government wanted a team from "friendly" countries and U.N. Security Council members to investigate the violence.

Zeidan has said he would reshuffle his cabinet and reorganize the government to cope with the "urgent" situation in the country. A spokesman for Libya's legislature said its members would hold an emergency meeting on Monday.

Earlier on Sunday, officials said that about 100 inmates out of 1,117 who escaped during a riot in Kuafiya prison on the outskirts of Benghazi on Saturday had been recaptured.

Officials said there had been an attack on the jail compound from outside as well as a riot inside after which some prisoners set their cloths and bed sheets on fire. Guards opened the gates to let them escape the fire, Marghani said.

Residents had helped guards to arrest some escapees.

Mohammed Sharif, head of security in Benghazi, said some prisoners had turned themselves in and others had been captured.

Officials said the escapees included criminals from other African states.

Benghazi has seen a wave of violence since last year with attacks on security forces as well as foreign targets, including the assault on the U.S. mission last September in which the U.S. ambassador and three other Americans were killed.

The Indian intervention on 29th July 1987 - The?17th Invasion of Sri Lanka by India in the Island?s 2500 Year History.?

By Ranjith Soysa (Spokesperson)

Harking back, one can conclude that 29th July 1987 was one of the darkest days in the history of Sri Lanka as it was the day on which India invaded Sri Lanka and forced the then Sri Lankan government to sign the infamous ?Indo - Lanka Accord?.

Prior to that dark day, the Indian Premier Rajiv Gandhi and Minister Natwar Singh had warned Sri Lanka of dire consequences if the Sri Lankan military action against the terrorist LTTE was not called off. Sri Lanka?s foreign minister sent a message to the UN Secretary General advising that Sri Lanka was facing an imminent threat to its independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity. The Sri Lankan President called the violation of Sri Lankan air space by India ?the 17th invasion of Sri Lanka by India in her 2500 years of history?.

Sri Lanka was left in the lurch by the world community at large except by a few nations in Asia and was forced to sign the Indo ?Sri Lanka agreement on 29th July 1987 as per the conditions stipulated by India. The agreement did not receive the consent of the people of Sri Lanka nor the approval of its democratically elected Government but was signed during a 48 hour curfew period.

India forced Sri Lanka to merge its Northern and Eastern provinces in order to create a Tamil majority area legitimising the myth that the area covered the traditional homeland of the Sri Lankan Tamils. As a consequence, the 13th Amendment to the Constitution was introduced on the 14th November 1987. Further, the agreement attempted to reduce Sri Lanka to a satellite state of India by negating Sri Lanka?s sovereign right to make decisions with regards to the Trincomalee harbour and forcing Sri Lanka to accept India to be the de-facto partner in developing the tank farm there.

The Indo Lanka agreement promised to usher in a period of peace in Sri Lanka. However the Indian intervention resulted in one of the most violent and brutal periods in Sri Lanka?s history with two insurrections, namely the LTTE against the Indian peace keepers and the JVP?s against the Sri Lankan forces occurring simultaneously. Ironically, having trained and armed a number of Tamil Terrorist groups, India was also forced to fight the most ruthless of them all, the LTTE. The people of Sri Lanka would not have forgotten that Vartharaja Perumal, the head of the Indian ?puppet administration? of the merged North & East, unilaterally declared a state of Tamil Eelam and fled to India.

The Indian military intervention under the guise of ?peace keeping? served no purpose other than its own objective of introducing hegemony over its island neighbour. In time, the IPKF came to be known to Tamil Sri Lankans as the ?Indian People Killing Force?. Among the many atrocities attributed to the IPKF were the massacre of 68 Tamils including doctors, nurses and patients at the Jaffna Hospital in October 1987 as well as numerous cases of rape and plunder of the very people they claimed to have come to protect.

Looking back, the Indo-Sri Lanka agreement failed to meet its objectives and India failed miserably to deliver her undertakings. Like the vast majority of Sri Lankans, we too are looking forward to the day when President Mahinda Rajapakse backed by the elected representatives of the people annuls this infamous agreement and restores the sovereign rights of Sri Lanka.

Egypt's ruling military kills scores of Islamists at rally

By

July 27, 2013

CAIRO - The Egyptian authorities unleashed a ferocious attack on Islamist protesters early Saturday, killing at least 72 people in the second mass killing of demonstrators in three weeks and the deadliest attack by the security services since Egypt's uprising in early 2011.

The attack provided further evidence that Egypt's security establishment was reasserting its dominance after President Mohammed Morsi's ouster three weeks ago, and widening its crackdown on his Islamist allies in the Muslim Brotherhood. The tactics - many were killed with gunshot wounds to the head or the chest - suggested that Egypt's security services felt no need to show any restraint.

?They had orders to shoot to kill,? said Gehad el-Haddad, a Brotherhood spokesman. The message, he said, was, ?This is the new regime.?

In Washington, Secretary of State John Kerry called this ?a pivotal moment for Egypt? and urged its leaders ?to help their country take a step back from the brink.?

The killings occurred a day after hundreds of thousands of Egyptians marched in support of the military, responding to a call by its commander for a ?mandate? to fight terrorism. The appeal by Gen. Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi, who has emerged as Egypt's de facto leader since the military removed Morsi from power, was widely seen as a green light to the security forces to increase their repression of the Islamists.

In the attack Saturday, civilians joined riot police officers in firing live ammunition at the protesters as they marched toward a bridge over the Nile. By early morning, the number of wounded people had overwhelmed doctors at a nearby field hospital.

One doctor sat by himself, crying as he whispered verses from the Quran. Nearby, medics tried to revive a man on a gurney. When they failed he was quickly lifted away to make room for the many others.

With hundreds of people gravely wounded, the toll seemed certain to rise, and by Saturday evening had already surpassed the more than 60 deaths on July 8, when soldiers and police officers fired on pro-Morsi demonstrators.

As the deaths have mounted, more than 200 since the government was overthrown, hopes have faded for a political solution to the standoff between the military and the Brotherhood, whose leaders, including Morsi, are imprisoned or preparing themselves for jail.

In a televised news conference hours after the clash, Interior Minister Mohamed Ibrahim absolved his men of any responsibility and made no mention of the high death toll. His officers, he said, ?have never and will never shoot a bullet on any Egyptian.?

He blamed Morsi's supporters for the violence, saying they planned to disrupt traffic on the bridge. ?We had to stop them,? Ibrahim said. The protesters threw rocks and fired weapons, he said, and a large number of officers were wounded, including two who were shot in the head.

Ibrahim also suggested that further repression was imminent as the authorities prepared to break up sit-ins that thousands of Morsi's supporters have held for weeks.

?God willing, it will be dispersed in a way that doesn't cause many losses,? he said. ?But God willing, it must end.?

Mohamed ElBaradei, the Nobel Peace Prize laureate who is vice president in the interim government, added a rare note of support for the Brotherhood from the country's new leaders, writing on Twitter that he condemned the ?excessive use of force? and was trying to ?end the standoff in a peaceful manner.?

Kerry called on Egypt's leaders ?to respect the right of peaceful assembly and freedom of expression? and to open an inclusive political dialogue.

?Over two years ago, a revolution began. Its final verdict is not yet decided, but it will be forever impacted by what happens right now,? he said in a statement.

Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel spoke by telephone with el-Sissi, urging him to exercise restraint and ?take steps to prevent further bloodshed and loss of life,? according to a Pentagon statement.

The violence broke out Friday night after a day of large, competing marches by supporters of Morsi and his opponents expressing solidarity with the military. At least eight people died Friday, but there was not the kind of widespread violence that many had feared after el-Sissi's speech Wednesday calling for demonstrations in support of the military.

That changed around 10:30 p.m., when groups of Morsi's supporters left their vast encampment in Nasr City, marching toward the central October 6 Bridge, where police officers were stationed, according to witnesses. Several people said that the protesters had left the camp because it had become overcrowded, and that people had fanned out from the encampment along several boulevards. Others said they had planned to march through a nearby neighborhood.

The group that came under attack walked down Nasr Street, past the reviewing stand where President Anwar Sadat was assassinated in 1981, and the pyramid-shaped memorial to the unknown soldier across the street, toward the bridge.

?We didn't have any weapons,? said Mohamed Abdulhadi, who said he had joined the march, which was ?not violent.? More than 10 other witnesses confirmed his assertion.

The Interior Ministry released a video after the killings that it said showed Morsi supporters firing birdshot at the police and damaging property. It showed protesters throwing rocks, unidentified people wandering into traffic, and one man pulling out what appeared to be a silver pistol and firing it, although it is not clear who the man was or which side of the fighting he was on.

Mohamed Saeed, an agricultural engineer, said he and some of the other protesters had started to exchange words with the officers before even reaching the bridge.

?You know how it is,? he said. ?Some of us said some provocative things, and the tear gas started.? The protesters threw rocks, and the confrontation quickly escalated, Saeed and others said. The Morsi supporters feared that the police were preparing to storm their encampment, so they started building brick walls on the road to ?to prevent them from coming into the sit-in,? Saeed said.

An hour and a half after the clashes started, the police and their allies started firing live ammunition and pellet guns, Saeed said. Other witnesses said they had seen snipers on the roofs of nearby buildings.

Windows Phone And Android Show Positive Growth In South Africa

Well here's some news for all those sworn Windows Phone fans. The ecosystem has shown some really strong growth in South Africa, a country dominated by BlackBerry, but looks like the Berry has to leave the house there too. Android comes after in South Africa.

Between May and July 2013, Windows Phone saw a near 47% growth, or an increase of 70,000 users. In the same period, Android saw a greater growth of 200,000 users, but a smaller growth percentage of just 20%. iOS and BlackBerry on the other hand haven't been doing well. The number of users has neither dropped nor picked up, which essentially translates to a 0% growth... Zero percent (that can't be a good thing).

That Windows Phone is outselling iOS devices in South Africa was almost unthinkable last year, a feat that deserves applause (Microsoft and Nokia, both rise). According to IDC, the total installed base of Windows Phone should exceed that of iOS by the end of 2013, pretty bold claim, but looks like it may actually pan out. Such a huge growth is largely thanks to Nokia's push with low-cost phones such as the Lumia 620 and Lumia 520 (especially the 520) which have sold in (large) numbers.

BlackBerry on the other end... Well... It's coming to an end.

Washington Redskins Darrell Green Corrects Report He Wanted Team to Change Name

Former Washington Redskins cornerback Darrell Green has come forth to defend his statement regarding the team name and statements he made in a radio interview earlier this week that incorrectly construed what he said as a call for the team to change the Redskins name.

Earlier this week, in an interview with WTOP-FM,?former Washington Redskins superstars and Pro Football Hall of Fame members Art Monk and Darrell Green conceded the term "redskins" could be considered offensive to some and a conversation about a name change "could be considered."

"It deserves and warrants conversation because somebody is saying, 'Hey, this offends me,' and then you have a conversation," Green said Thursday.

Media reports immediately surfaced, reporting the pair had called for, or at least supported, the idea and ongoing controversy suggesting the name change.

The next day, Green clarified his remarks in an interview with 106.7 The Fan, a D.C.-area radio station.

"What my real comment in response to the question was, 'Does it deserve merit?'" Green clarified. "And my comments were that, 'Look, if it offended somebody ? if somebody was offended, then I think it merits at least a discussion.' I mean, goodness, I mean, people should be able to say 'Hey, you offended me' and somebody should be able to have a dialogue. Now, where it lands, that?s another thing."

Later during the interview, Green made his position abundantly clear.

"In no way I want to see the Redskins change their name,? Green told the hosts and radio audience. "So that just makes that clear. And I?ll speak for Art, there?s no way he wants it, and I guarantee he didn?t say it, and I know I didn?t say it.?

The ongoing discussion, debate, controversy, non-issue that has occurred this offseason led team owner Daniel Snyder to declare he would never change the team name. On May 10, Snyder told USA Today,?"We'll never change the name," Snyder said. "It's that simple: NEVER?you can use caps."?

One week prior to Snyder's comments, a so-called "Native American chief" was interviewed on Redskins Nation, a show that is produced, staffed and hired by Redskins owner Dan Snyder. The team proudly announced the news and the support of someone who could put a face on the story.

In the interview, the chief declared, "We don't have a problem with [the name] at all; in fact we're honored. We're quite honored."

Nearly two months after the Redskins interview with the chief, Deadspin.com writer Dave McKenna reported, "It turns out that the 'full-blooded American Inuit chief' is neither a full-blooded American Inuit nor a chief in any formal sense of the term." The chief was not a chief after all. The Redskins had been duped.

Hopefully Darrell Green's closing comments Friday will bring the story to a simmer (not to mention training camp has started)?when he pointed out other cases in the news that have fueled the fire in the ongoing debate of fairness and equality.

With the Redskins in particular, as Green noted in his 106.7 interview, there isn't anyone that can stand up and adequately represent them.

?See, Rodney King has a face. Trayvon Martin has a face. Some of these issues have a face and a personality,? Green noted. ?One thing I will say on the Redskins side of it, there is no face or personality.?

Germany's Praktiker may lose 4,000 jobs after insolvency-report

BERLIN | Sat Jul 27, 2013 11:25am BST

BERLIN (Reuters) - As many as 4,000 jobs could be lost at German home improvement retailer Praktiker (PRAG.DE) and its Max Bahr chain following insolvency filings, Bild reported on Saturday, citing the group's deputy board chairman.

"That's a shocking number," the newspaper quoted deputy supervisory board chairman Ulrich Kruse as saying.

About a dozen Praktiker stores could shortly be closed, mainly shops that were about to be converted to the Max Bahr brand which traditionally had better profit margins, Wirtschaftswoche reported, without citing the source of the information.

Praktiker said on July 25 that its Max Bahr unit would file for insolvency after a trade credit insurer, named by unions as Coface (CNAT.PA), stopped providing coverage to suppliers.

Praktiker, whose blue and yellow-branded stores selling paints, tools and gardening products are a familiar sight in Germany's out-of-town shopping centres, has been grappling with a decline in sales and profitability since it ended a "20 percent off everything" discount strategy.

Report: Dozens killed as Egypt security forces clash with Morsi supporters in Cairo

As the atmosphere in Cairo becomes increasingly tense and combustible protesters took to the streets.? NBC's Ayman Mohyeldin reports.

By Elizabeth Chuck, Staff Writer, NBC News

At least 70 people died early Saturday when security forces attacked protesters supporting deposed Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi in Cairo, Muslim Brotherhood spokesman Gehan El-Haddad said according to reports.

Al-Jazeera's Egyptian TV station, meanwhile, reported much higher casualty figures in the early morning violence: 120 dead and some 4,500 injured, Reuters said. The figures could not be independently confirmed.

Amr Abdallah Dalsh / Reuters

A supporter of the Muslim Brotherhood holds a mask of ousted president Mohammed Morsi during a rally near Rabaa Adawiya square in Cairo on Friday.

Hundreds of thousands of people took part in rival political rallies in various Egyptian cities on Friday, and at least 274 people were injured, officials said.

Both supporters of the army and Morsi backers had announced they would be protesting Friday and warned there could be bloodshed. Army chief Gen. Abdel Fattah al-Sisi urged Egyptians earlier in the week to hold rallies to give the military a ?mandate? to confront weeks of violence caused by his July 3 overthrow of Morsi, Reuters reported.

"Sisi out! Morsi is president! Down with the army!" a gigantic crowd of Morsi protesters, who were holding a sit-in protests around?Cairo's Rabaa al-Adawiya mosque, chanted, reported the BBC.

Morsi, who was elected by a narrow margin in June 2012 in the country's first democratic vote, has been hidden from the public since he was ejected from power. On Friday, Mena news agency reported he would be detained for 15 days while a judge investigated allegations against him. This is his first formal detention since he was ousted, Al Jazeera reported.

Hussein Malla / AP

Days of massive protests and a military ultimatum forced the country's first democratically elected president from office.

According to Reuters, the probe stems from charges that he conspired with Palestinian Islamist group Hamas to escape jail during the 2011 uprising against former President Hosni Mubarak, killing prisoners and officers, kidnapping soldiers, and lighting buildings on fire.

"At the end of the day, we know all of these charges are nothing more than the fantasy of a few army generals and a military dictatorship," Brotherhood spokesman Gehad El-Haddad said. "We are continuing our protests on the streets."

State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki said the U.S. was "deeply concerned" by reports that Morsi had been ordered to be detained for more than two weeks.

"We of course are deeply concerned by reports that an Egyptian court has ordered the detention of Mr. Morsi," she said. "I can't speak to the specific charges, but we do believe that it is important that there be a process to work towards his release. Clearly this process should respect the personal security of him and take into account the volatile political situation in Egypt, and that's where our focus is."

A Reuters witness said thousands of pro-Morsi activists clashed with pro-army protesters in the Egyptian city of Alexandria, with some demonstrators hurling stones down on the crowds from nearby rooftops.

The army has warned it will ?turn its guns? on those who use violence in the protests, Reuters reported, while the Brotherhood has said civil war is a possibility.

On Friday morning, several hundred pro-army supporters gathered in Tahrir Square, the central rallying place two years ago for Egyptians. By night, after the evening prayer marking the end of the day?s Ramadan fast, the crowd had grown to tens of thousands, if not hundreds of thousands, in the square, according to the BBC.

A banner across one entrance to Tahrir Square read, "The people, the source of all power, mandate the army and police to purge terrorism," the BBC said.

Pro-army demonstrations were planned throughout Egypt. Morsi backers had also announced a large amount of rallies, with 34 in the Cairo area alone, Reuters said.

Hassan Ammar / AP

Egyptian soldiers stand guard atop an armored personnel vehicle on a bridge that leads to Tahrir Square on Friday.

UN leader Ban Ki-moon called on Egyptians to protest peacefully and asked the interim leadership to ensure security, reported Al Jazeera.

But casualties appeared likely after a month in which nearly 200 people, mostly supporters of Morsi, have died, according to Al Jazeera.?

The West has become increasingly alarmed by the course the country of 84 million people has taken. Washington this week said it delayed delivery of four F-16 fighter jets to Cairo and called on the Egyptian army to exercise "maximum restraint and caution" during Friday's rallies," reported Reuters.

The U.S. has not made a determination on whether a military coup took place in Egypt, which avoids a decision on whether U.S. aid should be cut off to Egypt.

"It is not in our national interest to make such a determination," State Department spokeswoman Psaki said on Friday, adding the law didn't require that a formal determination be made.?

If the administration were to determine a coup had occurred when Morsi was ousted, the $1.5 billion of military and economic assistance the U.S. provides Egypt would be required by law to stop.?

NBC's Catherine Chomiak and Reuters contributed to this report.

Crosby, Toews lead list of players invited to Canada's summer orientation camp

The word for players trying to make Canada's Olympic hockey team is simple _ you've got to be able to skate.

After winning gold on an NHL-size rink at the 2010 Winter Games in Vancouver, Canada will be moving back onto the larger international ice surface for the 2014 Games in Sochi, Russia.

And as Team Canada executive director Steve Yzerman put it: "There will be more of a premium placed on skating."

There will be plenty of that to chose from, as Yzerman and his staff announced on Monday a list of 47 players who have been invited to an Aug. 25-28 orientation camp in Calgary.

Among them are 15 players who won gold in Vancouver, led by Sidney Crosby, Jonathan Toews, Drew Doughty and goaltender Roberto Luongo.

The final roster will have 25 players _ likely three goalies, eight defencemen and 14 forwards.

"Ultimately, we'll pick the best players available to us, but playing on a bigger ice surface, I believe there is a priority on being able to skate," Yzerman said on a conference call. "That will weigh into our final decisions on putting this team together."

He said being too slow afoot was one of the reasons Canada bowed out in the quarter-finals the last time it played on the big ice at the 2006 Winter Games in Turin, Italy.

Without naming names, Yzerman allowed that there are about a dozen locks to make the team and that the tough part will be filling out the rest of the roster.

Some will be young stars who have emerged since 2010, perhaps Steven Stamkos, Claude Giroux or John Tavares.

But Mike Babcock, who returns as head coach, said all with have to be two-way players who check in their egos when they put on the Team Canada jersey.

"They have to be able to skate," the Detroit Red Wings coach said. "We expect players to be 200-footers.

"They have to play without the puck. And once again, it comes back to playing for Canada. It's not going to be about any of the individuals, it's going to be about Canada and executing our plan. So they have to find their game within our game."

Others players invited from the 2010 team were defencemen Dan Boyle, Duncan Keith, Brent Seabrook and Shea Weber; and forwards Patrice Bergeron, Corey Perry, Ryan Getzlaf, Rick Nash, Mike Richards, Eric Staal and Joe Thornton.

Not all are guaranteed to make the squad again, but Yzerman said big-game experience will work in a player's favour.

He said older skaters like Scott Niedermayer, who is now retired, and Chris Pronger, who hasn't played since November, 2011 due to concussion symptoms, were key performers in Vancouver.

"We want to put the best team on the ice, but there is great value in that veteran leadership," he said. "Having said that, we've got to make room for some of these younger players to come in.

"Some of these younger players are forcing their way into the lineup. Not only Stamkos, there will be a few of them. They've matured, they've put their time in and they're elite players in the league.

"So it's somewhat of a changing of the guard. There's always been some transition where guys were on the cusp of breaking in at previous Olympics and for various reasons they weren't selected, and it's time to move them in."

Some names on the list were a surprise, like Travis Hamonic who has been solid on defence for the New York Islanders, or Boston super-pest Brad Marchand, not to mention the Bruins bruising winger Milan Lucic.

There will be debate over some names left off the list, including 41-year-old goalie Martin Brodeur, who was on the four previous Olympic teams with NHL player participation, or 36-year-old winger Jarome Iginla, who played in the last three Games.

Iginla made the decisive pass to Crosby on the overtime goal that clinched gold in Vancouver.

Also left out were Dallas forward Jamie Benn, goalies Cam Ward of Carolina and James Reimer of Toronto, and Edmonton defenceman Justin Schultz.

Players can still play their way onto the team by performing well in the first half of the 2013-14 NHL campaign.

Goaltending will be an issue, as Luongo was dropped to second string status with Vancouver last season, only to get back the No. 1 job when the Canucks dealt Cory Schneider to New Jersey.

"With the changes made in Vancouver, I would assume that (Luongo) will play a lot in the first half of the season, which will bode well for Canada and for Roberto's hopes of being on this team," said Yzerman.

Other goalies invited were Corey Crawford, fresh off leading Chicago to a Stanley Cup, Montreal's Carey Price, Phoenix's Mike Smith and a surprise _ Washington's inexperienced Braden Holtby.

The defence will be another puzzle, if only because Canada is loaded with top-quality rearguards who shoot right-handed.

Four incumbents shoot right _ Boyle, Doughty, Weber and Seabrook _ while only Keith shoots left.

Other top candidates who shoot right include Norris Trophy winner P.K. Subban of Montreal, Alex Pietrangelo of St. Louis and Kris Letang of Pittsburgh.

The lefties include Marc Staal of the New York Rangers, Toronto captain Dion Phaneuf, Ottawa's Marc Methot and Vancouver's Dan Hamhuis.

Yzerman said he favours having an equal balance of right and-left-handed shots on defence, although it is not cast in stone. And he noted the high-powered Soviet teams of the 1970s and 1980s had all left-hand shots.

But Babcock also likes a balance, which could be bad news for younger righty blueliners.

"The best eight will be in the squad and then we'll decide who plays with who," he said. "But when I look at the group, the veterans of last time and the young players coming in, it looks like there's a chance to have a balance.

"But we'll watch until the end of the December and see who are the best to help us succeed."

Teams must announce rosters by Dec. 31.

As with every Canadian Olympic squad, there will be centres forced to play on the wing by a glut of talent down the middle. Eric Staal and Giroux are among those who may be moved to the wings.

A difference from previous summer camps is that players almost certainly won't go on the ice in Calgary, as it would cost Hockey Canada up to $1 million in insurance. The U.S. team won't skate at its camp in August for the same reason.

Instead, one day will be for media and administrative things like going over travel plans and arrangements for families. The rest will spent learning the team system of play and watching video, with time out for team-building activities ? perhaps some golf or a barbecue.

The Chicago Blackhawks have the most players invited with five, followed by the Pittsburgh Penguins with four and Boston, Los Angeles and Washington with three each.

Other defencemen invited were Karl Alzner, Jay Bouwmeester, Mike Green and Marc-Edouard Vlasic.

The other forwards are Jeff Carter, Logan Couture, Matt Duchene, Chris Kunitz, Andrew Ladd, James Neal, Patrick Sharp, Jordan Staal and Martin St. Louis.

The team also announced that the coaching staff from Vancouver would return, including assistants Ken Hitchcock and Lindy Ruff, but with Boston's Claude Julien replacing Jacques Lemaire.

"Mike and his staff did an outstanding job in 2010 in Vancouver," said Yzerman. "That was the easiest decision and the right decision to make in this case. I'm 100 per cent confident that with our coaching staff we'll be prepared."

The announcement by Hockey Canada came days after an agreement was reached to have NHL players participate at the Sochi Games.

Canada opens the Games on Feb. 13 against Norway.

Florida Gators LB Antonio Morrison arrested for allegedly barking at police dog

GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- Florida Gators linebacker Antonio Morrison has been arrested for the second time in five weeks, this time for allegedly barking at a police dog and resisting arrest, and will miss at least the first two games of the season after being suspended from the team Sunday.

Morrison's defense was the dog barked first, according to a police report.

According to an Alachua County Sheriff Office's report, police responded to a suspicious incident and disturbance call at 3:43 a.m. Sunday at a Gainesville hotel adjacent to a nightclub. While officer William A. Arnold was investigating the vehicle that was the subject of the call, a group of several men were walking along SW 13th Street.

One of the men reportedly approached the patrol car and began barking at his police dog through the open window. The report said that caused the dog, named Bear, to bark back at the man, which Arnold says in his report diverted his attention from investigating the vehicle.

The report says Arnold told the man -- later identified by his driver's license as Morrison -- to wait in front of his patrol car and the man resisted when Arnold tried to handcuff him. Two other officers arrived and helped detain Morrison, according to the report.

"I'm extremely disappointed in Antonio Morrison's decision making," Florida coach Will Muschamp said in a statement. "He has been suspended from the team and will miss at least two games to begin the season."

Alachua County Sheriff's spokesman Art Forgey said it's rare for someone to hara## a canine officer.

"We don't see that very often at all," he said. "Gainesville Police Department has horses and they see it sometimes. Usually everybody steers clear of the dogs."

Morrison -- a 6-foot-1, 230-pound sophomore expected to be the Gators' starting middle linebacker this season -- told the officers he barked at the dog because the dog barked at him first.

He was booked into the Alachua County Jail at 4:15 a.m. ET.

Muschamp had previously said he hadn't decided whether to suspend Morrison as a result of a June 16 arrest for battery after he punched a nightclub bouncer because he was not given a discounted rate for admission. Muschamp said last Tuesday that Morrison was being punished inside the program for that transgression.

For that arrest, Morrison entered into a deferred prosecution, which stated he must pay $100 in prosecution costs and either an additional $150 or perform 12 hours of community service. He must also complete a University of Florida drug-and-alcohol abuse course, attend an anger-management course and participate in two eight-hour ride-alongs with the University of Florida Police Department.

If Morrison met those conditions within six months, the battery charge would be dismissed.

Across U.S., people rally for 'Justice for Trayvon'

ATLANTA (AP) ? Crowds chanted "Justice! Justice!" as people rallied in dozens of U.S. cities, urging authorities to press federal civil rights charges against a former neighborhood watch leader found not guilty in the shooting death of unarmed teen Trayvon Martin.

The Rev. Al Sharpton's National Action Network organized the "Justice for Trayvon" rallies and vigils outside federal buildings Saturday in at least 101 cities, including New York, Los Angeles, Atlanta and other locations.

One week after a jury found George Zimmerman not guilty in the 2012 shooting death of Martin in a gated central Florida community, people gathered nationwide Saturday to press for federal civil rights charges against Zimmerman. They also called for changes in the nation's self-defense laws.

"No justice! No peace!" some chanted. Many also sang hymns, prayed and held hands.

The Florida case has become a flashpoint in separate but converging national debates over self-defense, guns, and race relations. Zimmerman, who successfully claimed that he was protecting himself when he shot Martin, identifies himself as Hispanic. Martin was black.

In Atlanta, speakers noted that the rally there took place in the shadows of federal buildings named for two figures who had vastly differing views on civil rights and racial equality: Richard B. Russell was a Georgia governor and U.S. senator elected in the Jim Crow South; The Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. is the face of African-Americans' civil rights movement.

"What's so frightening about a black man in a hood?" said the Rev. Raphael Warnock, who now occupies the pulpit at King's Ebenezer Baptist Church, at the Atlanta rally.

In New York, hundreds of people ? including Martin's mother, Sybrina Fulton, and music superstars Jay-Z and Beyonce ? gathered in the heat.

Fulton told the crowd she was determined to fight for changes needed to ensure that black youths are no longer viewed with suspicion because of their skin color.

"I promise you I'm going to work for your children as well," she told the crowd.

Earlier Saturday, at Sharpton's headquarters in Harlem, she implored people to understand that the tragedy involved more than Martin alone. "Today it was my son. Tomorrow it might be yours," she said.

In addition to pushing the Justice Department to investigate civil rights charges against Zimmerman, Sharpton told supporters In New York that he wants to see a rollback of "stand your ground" self-defense laws.

"We are trying to change laws so that this never, ever happens again," Sharpton said.

"Stand your ground" laws are on the books in more than 20 states, and they go beyond many older, traditional self-defense statutes. In general, the newer laws eliminate a person's duty to retreat, if possible, in the face of a serious physical threat.

Zimmerman didn't invoke "stand your ground," relying instead on a traditional self-defense argument, but the judge included a provision of the law in the jurors' instructions, allowing them to consider it as a legitimate defense.

Neither was race discussed in front of the jury. But the two topics have dominated public discourse about the case, and came up throughout Saturday's rallies.

In Indianapolis, the Rev. Jeffrey Johnson told roughly 200 attendees that Saturday's nationwide rallies were about making life safer for young black men who are still endangered by racial profiling.

Johnson compared Zimmerman's acquittal to that of four white officers in the beating of black motorist Rodney King in 1992.

"The verdict freed George Zimmerman, but it condemned America more," said Johnson, pastor of the Eastern Star Church in Indianapolis and a member of the board of directors of the National Action Network.

In Miami, Tracy Martin spoke about his son.

"This could be any one of our children," he said. "Our mission now is to make sure that this doesn't happen to your child."

He recalled a promise he made to his son as he lay in his casket. "I will continue to fight for Trayvon until the day I die," he said.

Shantescia Hill held a sign in Miami that read: "Every person deserves a safe walk home." The 31-year-old mother, who is black, said, "I'm here because our children can't even walk on the streets without fearing for their lives."

Attorney General Eric Holder announced this week that his department would investigate whether Zimmerman could be charged under federal civil rights laws. Such a case would require evidence that Zimmerman harbored racial animosity against Martin.

Most legal experts say that would be a difficult charge to prove. Zimmerman's lawyers have said their client wasn't driven by race, but by a desire to protect his neighborhood.

Golf: Westwood two clear at Muirfield

Lee Westwood will take a two-shot lead into the final round of the Open Championship after a third-round one-under par 70.

Westwood two clear at Muirfield

The 40-year-old mixed three birdies and one eagle with four bogeys to place himself at the top of the leaderboard on -3 in testing conditions at Muirfield.
The Englishman has yet to win a major and he will have to hold off the attentions of some big-name players if he is to break his duck on Sunday, with world number one Tiger Woods lurking just two shots behind and in a tie for second with fellow US star Hunter Mahan.
Woods managed just two birdies all day and dropped shots at the fourth, seventh and 17th in his round of 72, but remains in contention alongside Mahan, whose 68 included five birdies and two bogeys.
Masters champion and last year's Open runner-up Adam Scott is still in with a great chance of taking the title as he carded a round of 70 to sit on even par.
With the course rock hard and pars hard to come by on some holes, there are a number of players currently over par who might still have a say in proceedings.
US duo Ryan Moore and Zach Johnson are nicely poised at +1, with Argentina's Angel Cabrera and Sweden's Henrik Stenson also on that mark.
Phil Mickelson's 72 sees him sit on two-over par and five shots adrift of the leader, with Francesco Molinari also on that score with 18 holes to go.
But it was a day to forget for second-round leader Miguel Angel Jimenez, who carded a 77 to slip back to +3, and he has Sergio Garcia, Brandt Snedeker, Jamie Donaldson, Hideki Matsuyama, Jason Day and Dustin Johnson for company heading into the final day.
All eyes will be on Westwood on Sunday to see if he can continue Britain's amazing summer of sport but Woods has the experience and pedigree and it looks set to be a cracking final round north of the border.

A career round gives Mickelson a claret jug

(AP) ? Phil Mickelson is mystified no more by links golf. He has his name etched in a silver claret jug to prove it.

Mickelson delivered his best closing round ever in a major Sunday ? at the British Open, of all places ? when he ran off four birdies over the last six holes for a 5-under 66 at Muirfield to win the third leg of the career Grand Slam.

"This is such an accomplishment for me because I just never knew if I'd be able to develop the game to play links golf effectively," Mickelson said. "To play the best round arguably of my career, to putt better than I've ever putted, to shoot the round of my life ... it feels amazing to win the claret jug."

At the end of a rough-and-tumble week along the Firth of Forth, Mickelson was the only player under par. He wound up with a three-shot win over Henrik Stenson, one of four players atop the leaderboard during a final round that was up for grabs until Mickelson seized control in the final hour.

Lee Westwood, who started Sunday with a two-shot lead, fell behind for the first time all day with a bogey on the 13th and never recovered. He closed with a 75. Masters champion Adam Scott took the lead with a 4-foot birdie on the 11th, and closed as sloppily as he did last year. He made four bogeys starting at the 13th, and a final bogey on the 18th gave him a 72. At least he has a green jacket from the Masters to console him this year.

Tiger Woods, in his best position to win a major since the crisis in his personal life, stumbled badly on his way to a 74 and was never a serious challenger.

Westwood said he didn't play all that badly. Instead, he paid tribute to what will be remembered as one of the great closing rounds in major championship history.

"When you birdie four of the last six of a round any day, that's good going," Westwood said. "With a decent breeze blowing and some tough flags out there, it's obviously a pretty good experience. When you do it in a major championship, it's an even better experience."

But this major championship? Phil Mickelson?

He had only contended twice in two decades at golf's oldest championship. One week after he won the Scottish Open in a playoff on the links-styled course of Castle Stuart, Mickelson was simply magical on the back nine of a brown, brittle Muirfield course that hasn't played this tough since 1966.

Tied for the lead, Mickelson smashed a 3-wood onto the green at the par-5 17th to about 25 feet for a two-putt birdie, and finished in style with a 10-foot birdie putt on the 18th to match the lowest score of this championship.

Mickelson figured a par on the 18th would be tough for anyone to catch him. When the ball dropped in the center of the cup, he raised both arms in the air to celebrate his fifth career major, tying him with the likes of Seve Ballesteros and Byron Nelson.

"Best round I've ever seen him play," said his caddie, Jim "Bones" Mackay. Mickelson shared a long hug with his caddie and whispered in his ear, "I did it."

His final surge was right about the time Westwood and Scott began to fold.

Scott, trying to join an exclusive list of players who have won a green jacket and a claret jug in the same year, made a remarkable recovery from the dunes right of the par-3 13th hole, only to miss the 7-foot par putt. He took three putts for bogeys on the next two holes ? from long range on the 14th, and from 20 feet on the 15th ? and found a bunker on the next.

Westwood started to lose his grip on the jug with bogeys on the seventh and eighth, and failing to birdie the downwind, par-5 ninth. Presented with birdie chances early on the back nine, his putting stroke began to look tentative. He hit into the dunes on the right side of the 13th to make bogey and never caught up.

Westwood and Scott tied for third with Ian Poulter, who played a four-hole stretch in 5-under around the turn and closed with a 67. At 1-over 285, he canceled a flight home in case of a playoff. Moments later, with Mickelson pulling away, the outcome was clear.

Making this even sweeter for Mickelson is that just one month ago he lost out on yet another chance to win the U.S. Open, the missing link of a career Grand Slam. Mickelson twice made bogey with wedge in his hand on the back nine at Merion and had his record sixth runner-up finish.

Mickelson joins an elite list of winners at Muirfield, which is considered the fairest of the links on the British Open rotation. All but two of the Open champions at Muirfield are in the World Hall of Fame. Mickelson is the only winner who already has been inducted.

It was the 43rd win of his PGA Tour career. The guy who once couldn't win the big one now has five majors in the last nine years. This one returns him to No. 2 in the world ranking for the first time in nearly three years.

Woods, meanwhile, now has gone 17 majors without winning, and that pursuit of Jack Nicklaus and his benchmark of 18 majors ? Woods is stuck on 14 ? doesn't look any closer. He three-putted twice in four holes and looked like just another contender on this Sunday.

He attributed his round to not getting the right pace on the greens, which he said were progressively slower.

"I felt like I was really playing well today, actually the whole week, " said Woods, who has not broken 70 in the final round of his last seven majors. "I really hit so many good shots and really had control of my ball this week. As I said, it was just trying to get the speed, and I just didn't get it."

President Obama On George Zimmerman Verdict: "Trayvon Martin Could Have Been Me"

News: President Obama On George Zimmerman Verdict: "Trayvon Martin Could Have Been Me"

Saturday, Jul 20, 2013 12:30PM

Written by Cyrus Langhorne

After days of emotional reactions from high-profile celebrities over George Zimmerman being acquitted for fatally shooting teenager Trayvon Martin, President Barack Obama has delivered some heartfelt words.

President Obama publicly spoke out on the verdict and even made a direct connection to the slain Florida resident.

"Trayvon Martin could have been me 35 years ago," the president said in the remarks, made Friday during a surprise appearance in the White House press room. Mr. Martin, a 17-year-old African-American, was shot and killed in Florida last year in a case that riveted millions of Americans and sparked debate over the state of race relations in the country. Saying he would leave arguments about the verdict to legal analysts, Mr. Obama didn't critique last Saturday's acquittal of George Zimmerman, the neighborhood watchman who faced various charges related to the killing. (Wall Street Journal)

He also used the widespread platform to acknowledge the struggle most African American men experience due to their race.

"There are very few African-American men who haven't had the experience of walking across the street and hearing the locks click on the doors of cars," Mr. Obama said. "That happens to me--at least before I was a senator." The remarks, delivered without a teleprompter, were a striking example of America's first black president seeking to guide the country's thinking on race without inflaming racial tensions or undermining the judicial system. They also amounted to Mr. Obama's most pointed comments about race since his 2008 presidential campaign. Mr. Obama issued a brief statement the day after the Martin verdict was handed down. He urged calm and compassion, noting that "a jury has spoken." Missing, though, was any personal reflection from a president with a unique perspective on the matter. (Wall Street Journal)

A few days ago, Mobb Deep's Prodigy said all Americans have to familiarize themselves with the legal system in the wake of Zimmerman's acquittal.

Prodigy, also on Wednesday's "RapFix," said the responsibility to bring about change now falls on everyone, not just the African-American community. "Our people need to learn the laws -- people, not just black people -- need to learn the laws, learn the politics. Focus on what's important," he said. The Mobb Deep rapper, who was sentenced to three-and-a-half years in prison on a gun charge back in 2007, stressed the importance of change, saying that it starts with the individual. "I could be more vocal about certain changes that need to be made, certain changes that I made in my life. 'Starting with the man in the mirror,' like Michael Jackson said," he shared, referencing the King of Pop's 1987 single. "If everybody does that, we'll be a little step closer to a solution to this." (MTV)

Following last weekend's Zimmerman verdict, a Facebook page urging people not to support select Florida-based companies launched.

"Florida's "Stand Your Ground Law" killed Trayvon Martin's opportunity for justice. Stand Your Ground must be repealed and corporations based in Florida that profit from our patronage must stand with us against Stand Your Ground or we will make them pay in their pockets. Economic embargos and boycotts have worked to debilitate America's unjust laws like Jim Crow and alienate and starve countries like Cuba. A focused, targeted and public economic embargo of Florida-based corporations will force them to take a stand against Stand Your Ground in their own interests, The following post list the top Florida-based corporations who rely upon your patronage and support." Marine ordered freed in Iraq war crime case

SAN DIEGO (AP) ? The U.S. Marine Corps released a sergeant Friday whose murder conviction was overturned in a major blow to the military's prosecution of Iraq war crimes.

Sgt. Lawrence Hutchins III, of Plymouth, Mass., walked out of the brig at the Marine Corps Miramar Air Station in San Diego after having served more than half of his 11-year sentence.

Once his release paperwork was processed, Hutchins was to be transported by Marine Corps officials to Camp Pendleton, where he would check in to his new unit at the base's headquarters, said Marine Corps spokesman Lt. Col. Joseph Kloppel.

Hutchins led an eight-man squad accused of kidnapping an Iraqi man from his home in April 2006, marching him to a ditch and shooting him to death in the village of Hamdania.

Hutchins has said he thought the man ? who turned out to be a retired policeman ? was an insurgent leader.

None of the other seven squad members served more than 18 months.

The Court of Appeals for the Armed Forces overturned Hutchins' conviction on June 26, supporting his claims that his rights were violated when he was held in solitary confinement without access to a lawyer for seven days during his 2006 interrogation in Iraq.

The move was the latest in a series of twists for Hutchins, whose case was overturned once by a lower court three years ago only to be reinstated in 2011 by the same court that agreed with his latest petition.

Under the military justice system, Hutchins could not be freed until the court ruled on a Navy motion in response to the June 26 decision.

Prosecutors asked the court to reconsider its decision to toss out the conviction, saying Hutchins waived his right to counsel at the time and willfully told his side of the story without coercion.

The court Thursday denied that request and issued a mandate that he be released.

The case, however, is not closed.

The Navy can order the case be retried or prosecutors can appeal to the Supreme Court.

The Navy issued a statement Friday saying it was exploring those options and a decision is expected next month.

Kloppel said the Camp Pendleton unit Hutchins will be assigned to will determine his job assignment.

Hutchins' military attorney, Maj. Babu Kaza, said Hutchins will live off base in nearby Oceanside with his wife and two children.

"My family and I have been through so much," Hutchins said in a statement after his conviction was overturned.

He could not be immediately reached for comment Friday.

Kids Hold Fundraiser for Samuel?Helfand

Wednesday, July 17, 2013

When 7?-year-old Samuel Helfand was asked what his favorite vacation was, his response was??Texas.?

This is unremarkable (your thoughts about the Lone Star state notwithstanding), until you consider one thing: Samuel and his family were in Houston so he could receive proton-radiation therapy at MD Anderson Hospital to treat his exceptionally rare form of cancer. But, during the two months they spent there, Samuel went to lots of basketball games ? even, at one point, playing some one-on-one with Dick Vitale. Who wouldn?t call that a?vacation?

Indeed, in the face of this profound challenge, Samuel?s parents, Heidi and Mark, have made ?keeping it fun? their motto ? chasing doctor?s appointments with the zoo, the skate park, mini golf, bowling, and?baseball.

And the community has stepped up, too, with offers of fun that arrive seemingly out of the blue. The Santa Barbara Foresters came first, when Samuel was chosen to be a Hugs for Cubs kid. The program was started in honor of Eric Pintard ? son of team owner/manager Bill Pintard and former Forester himself, who lost his battle with cancer in 2004 ? and deals in Fun with a capital F. Samuel?s been spending these long summer nights in the dugout with the team ? and regularly competing in the between-innings pie-eating contests. He?s thrown the first pitch and traveled to Dodgers and Angels? games (and has the pic with Angels? manager Mike Scioscia to prove?it).

Samuel learned to surf ? and overcame some fears about the ocean ? at Surf Happens Foundation?s Camp Hana Hou. That comfort in the water will come in handy this Saturday, when he?ll be the recipient of another special honor: the Keiki Paddle. The yearly fundraiser is a spin-off of the Friendship Paddle, with one unique twist: It is run almost entirely by kids. The board is composed of kids; kids vote on who will be the beneficiary. While the Helfands have a couple of hunches as to who nominated Samuel, the news that more than 100 kids will paddle all the way from Campus Point to East Beach (that?s 11 miles!) in order to raise money for him ? and show him a great time ? was a surprise. And it presented another fun challenge for Samuel: He?ll paddle,?too.

It all makes those weekly chemo appointments much less of a bummer. But, Samuel said, they?re not so bad. Once he numbs his port (which he showed off at school, earning ?Cool!?s from boys and ?Ewwww?s from girls), it goes quickly; afterward, he chooses a toy. (Yesterday, he got a water gun. Note to little sis, Julia: Look?out!)

Heidi and Mark seem surprised at Samuel?s resiliency, but their focus on fun surely has something to do with it. After all, he?s a kid like any other. (?Just more doctors? appointments,? said?Heidi.)

And really, kids just want to?play.

Approximately two minutes into our conversation at their home, he was bored. Who?d blame him? It was a sunny day; he wanted to go outside and skateboard. Heidi and Mark told him to wait; we continued talking while he chased the cat, showed me his collection of broken bats salvaged from Foresters games, pointed out that he didn?t just play ?Dickie V? but beat him, and, eventually, lay on the floor in the family room, resigned to waiting it out. At one point, we called from the kitchen, ?Hey, Samuel, do you know the name of your tumor?? ?Myxopapillary ependymoma,? he called?back.

And then ? finally! ? we went outside, and he hopped on his skateboard. The neighborhood kids were waiting, and he had a new trick to?practice.
