LG Prada 3.0 sashays over to South Korea because Android phones are so hot right now

Do you take your Android phones with an extra dose of designer? Then LG's Prada 3.0 is probably already on your radar, ready to mix and match with your walk-in closet of wardrobe options. This respectably specced, luxe update is right on target to hit South Koreans' manicured mitts tomorrow, with first dibs going to SK Telecom and a release on KT to follow on January 5th. The usual two-year contract pricing applies for both operators, but contract-averse users can also snag the stylish handset for 899,900 won (about $778) outright. That's the high price you pay for fashion (and a minimalist UI overlay), but at least this forward-looking device is set to fatten its figure with Ice Cream Sandwich in Q2 of next year. Of course, by then, it'll already be terribly gauche to own one anyway.

China Tainted Milk: Mengniu Dairy Group Destroys Milk With Cancer ...

BEIJING ? China's biggest milk producer destroyed a batch found to have excessive levels of a cancer-causing toxin, in another safety scare for the country's dairy industry.

Mengniu Dairy Group said in a statement seen on its website Monday that the problem was discovered before the milk containing high levels of aflatoxin was sold to the public.

"Mengniu would like to express our sincere apologies to consumers," the company said, adding none of the tainted products had made their way into the market.

"We will draw a big lesson from this incident and will work harder to meet all national and corporate standards on quality in the future," it said.

Aflatoxin is produced by a fungus that commonly grows in grain and legume crops such as peanuts, soybeans, corn and wheat. It can be found in the milk of animals that eat tainted crops.

High levels are toxic and carcinogenic, but aflatoxin is not considered harmful at low levels.

Mengniu's statement said the tainted milk was from one of its plants in Sichuan province in southwestern China. It did not say how much milk was destroyed or how high the aflatoxin levels were.

China's food chain, and especially the diary industry, has come under increased scrutiny in recent years because of a series of safety problems.

In 2008, at least six babies died and 300,000 became sick after being feed milk powder tainted with melamine. The industrial chemical is illegally added to dairy products to make them appear higher in protein.

A dairy farmer and a milk salesman were executed and 19 other people were jailed for their role in selling the tainted milk products.

Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays From Everyone At Oil On Whyte!

Hope yours was full. Photo courtesy icejerseys.com

Ah, Christmas. A time for reflection, family, too many confections, and at least one member of the family making everyone uncomfortable by hitting the egg nog table by 11 AM.

At least, that?s how it was in my house growing up.

Here?s hoping you got everything you wished for this holiday season, and if you?re lucky, a little bit more later on.

Have fun, be safe, and remember to get your rest later on tonight. There?s a Boxing Day matchup against the Canucks tomorrow night, and you?re going to need your beer drinking skills to be at their peak.

From all of us to all of you, even to Canuck fans just this once.? Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays and all that. Spend time with your folks if at all possible. As Lowetide once said, they?re gone forever when they go.

New Space Station Crew Set for Holiday Arrival Friday (SPACE.com)

Three spaceflyers who launched on a Russian rocket Wednesday (Dec. 21) are preparing to dock at the International Space Station tomorrow (Dec. 23), just in time for the holidays.

NASA astronaut Don Pettit, Russian cosmonaut Oleg Kononenko, and Dutch astronaut Andre Kuipers of the European Space Agency (ESA) are due to join the long-duration crew of the orbiting outpost for about five months.

The trio lifted off atop the Russian Soyuz TMA-03M spacecraft from the snowy Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan at 8:16 a.m. EST (1316 GMT) on Wednesday. They are expected at the space station on Friday at 10:22 a.m. EST.

Waiting aboard the station are commander Daniel Burbank of NASA and Russian flight engineers Anton Shkaplerov and Anatoly Ivanishin. The new arrivals will return the space station's crew size back to its full six-person complement.

Deck the halls

The halls of the International Space Station are decked and Burbank, Shkaplerov and Ivanishin are looking forward to sharing a festive holiday season with their new crewmates once they arrive. [Holidays in Space: An Astronaut Photo Album]

"Our planet is so beautiful, peaceful and serene when you look at it from space ? the most beautiful holiday card you could imagine," Burbank wrote Dec. 17 on the astronaut blog Fragile Oasis. He and the other station residents have been setting up holiday decorationsand preparing for a big feast of space food after their crewmates arrive.

Though there will be Christmas cheer, the astronauts aren't expecting any gifts to arrive with the incoming Soyuz.

"In terms of gifts, when you're off in the frontier, you're not going to waste upmass on something like that," Pettit told SPACE.com in a preflight interview. "These holidays become matter of fact. My family gets to experience Christmas at Baikonur."

Packed schedule

The new crewmembers also won't have too much down time, as their schedule is packed with research and space station upkeep work.

They also plan to host the first visit of a commercial spacecraft to the orbiting laboratory. In February an unmanned SpaceX Dragon spacecraft will launch on the company's Falcon 9 rocket, carrying a haul of cargo to the space station. It will be the second orbital flight of Dragon, and the first to the outpost.

When it approaches the lab, the station crew will grab onto the capsule with the space station's robotic arm and berth it to the facility.

"We're prepared to do whatever happens during our mission in terms of a visiting vehicle profile," Pettit said. "It looks like we are going to be longshoremen."

International cooperation

Now that NASA's space shuttles are retired, the agency is hoping commercial spacecraft can fill in the gap, first to carry cargo, and eventually people, to the space station, which is set to operate until at least 2020.

In the meantime, U.S. astronauts will continue riding on Russian Soyuz spacecraft until a private American alternative is available. Russian, European and Japanese automated vehicles will deliver cargo.

The $100 billion, football field-size space station is a partnership between the United States, Russia, Europe, Japan and Canada.

"I think space has been a sports arena," Kononenko said during a preflight press conference."I think the future of space exploration belongs only to joint exploration, and we will be able to do deep space missions only if we cooperate together."

Google Doodles Happy Holidays

It is celebration time, and Google's is here wishing "Happy Holidays" to all with its new doodle.

Google has been wishing all its users happy Christmas and holidays from the past 10 years, with a new doodle each year.

This year Google's "holiday doodle" has a clear black background depicting a dark night with the designs of snowflake, Santa Claus, bell, snowman, candle and a gift-wrapped box made with neon lights. The Google logo is visible as an outline behind the icons. The images are static and a click on the logo will take you to the "happy holidays Google search results" page.

Last year's Google holiday doodle was an interactive design with holiday scenes from across the world.

The first Google doodle was created in honor of the Burning Man festival in 1998. Google since has been using doodles to represent important occasions like festivals, birthdays of important persons, events, etc.? Most of the Google doodles are in a lighter vein and act as simple reminders of important happenings, events, anniversaries, etc. The first holiday Google doodle had a snowman in 1999.

Like us on Facebook

The simplicity of the message and, sometimes, the humor embedded in it have made Google doodles a craze among Internet users.

Google has also started a "Doodle for Google" competition that gives K-12 students an opportunity to design Google doodles. The competition for '"Google Doodle-2012" has been announced and the details are expected to be released by Google in early January.

To capitalize on the fan craze over Google doodles, Google had recently revamped their doodle site to include a purchase feature for doodle designs. Now fans can buy any of the Google doodle designs from the Web site of Doodles on Demand, and print them on mugs, caps, T-shirts or any other merchandise.

New Space Crew to Launch From Winter Wonderland on Wednesday (SPACE.com)

A diverse crew of veteran spacemen is poised to blast off toward the International Space Station on Wednesday (Dec. 21) to double the population of the orbital outpost just in time for Christmas.

NASA astronaut Don Pettit, Russian cosmonaut Oleg Kononenko, and Dutch astronaut Andre Kuipers, part of the European Space Agency (ESA) will join three men already living aboard the space station as Expedition 30 flight engineers.

The trio will lift off from Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan early Wednesday at 8:16 a.m. EST (1316 GMT) aboard a Russian Soyuz TMA-03M spacecraft. They are expected to arrive at the orbiting laboratory on Friday (Dec. 23) at 10:22 a.m. EST (1522 GMT).

With the arrival coinciding with the holiday season, the space station's current crew is already planning a warm reception for the new arrivals. In a holiday video message from space, station commander Daniel Burbank of NASA said the orbiting lab is festooned with decorations to mark the December and January holidays. [Holidays in Space: An Astronaut Photo Album]

"We'll celebrate the holidays in great fashion after they get here," Burbank said.

NASA photos from the central Asian launch site show the region covered in snow. A NASA spokesperson described the temperatures as "bitterly cold" in a video recorded at the launch pad on Monday (Dec. 19). The temperature was about minus 15 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 26 degrees Celsius).

The new arrivals will put the space station at its full crew complement of six and allow the spaceflyers to focus on science research, rather than simply station upkeep.

"Each of these experiments somehow makes use of the weightless environment of the space station or they make use of the actual high-vacuum environment outside," Pettit told SPACE.com in a preflight interview. "You're literally in a frontier environment where the answers are not in the back of the book."

Pettit, Kuipers, and Kononenko will join Burbank and flight engineers Anton Shkaplerov and Anatoly Ivanishin of Russia. They will spend about five months in space, before returning to Earth in May 2012.

Their stay is scheduled to coincide with the first arrival of a commercial cargo spacecraft to deliver supplies to the outpost. Private space company SpaceX's Dragon spacecraft is due to make its first launch to the space station Feb. 7 atop a SpaceX Falcon 9 booster.

The craft will make an automated approach to the laboratory, and then space station crewmembers will grab onto it with the station's robotic arm. The Dragon is one of a new fleet of commercial spaceships under development that NASA has been encouraging to pick up the slack in cargo delivery left by the now-retired space shuttles.

Kononenko, Pettit and Kuipers are all making return visits to the outpost, as all have flown to the International Space Station on previous missions.

"When I went the first time I think the station was half the size it is now," Kuipers said during a press conference earlier this year. "People ask me, 'Why do you have to train so much? You've been there.' Well, it's pretty much different."

Indeed, the space station, now complete, is the football field-size product of more than a decade of construction. Now that NASA's space shuttle program is retired, it is the focus of the agency's current human spaceflight efforts.

HP Charcoal Gray 15.6" 2000-379wm Laptop PC with Intel Core i3-370M Processor and Windows 7 Home Premium 5 5 3 4

Nice computer for the money! I've done some research on different name brand computers. Apple computers get real high reviews, followed by Lenuvo and then HP. For the price and quality of the the product, you can't go wrong with HP. Nothing fancy, but just a good computer for doing the things I need a computer to do, which is mostly surfing the internet and emails. My only complaint as I didn't read all of the specification is this computer does not have the HDMI cable connection in the event you want to hook it up to the TV. Otherwise, I'm very happy so far with the purchase! 11/29/2011

Loving it! I have a Mac because I edit and it has Final Cut Pro as well as my work laptop and a Lenovo Netbook. But this HP is just great. I've definitely got the biggest bang for my buck. So here's hoping it keeps motoring along as well as it is now. I can tell you, if you don't have a professional need for a Mac, then don't buy one. This HP can fill any need you have for a laptop. 12/02/2011

Contents of Michael Jackson's final home fetch $1 million (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) ? The contents of the mansion where Michael Jackson's lifeless body was found went under the auction hammer this weekend, reaping three times pre-sale estimates for a total of close to $1 million.

A month after Dr. Conrad Murray was convicted of involuntary manslaughter for the pop star's 2009 death by drug overdose, collectors bid on some 500 items from the home Jackson rented in Los Angeles while preparing for comeback concerts in London.

Two sessions on Saturday at the Beverly Hills gallery of Julien's Auctions were standing room only, according to a statement from Julien's, and drew bidders from around the world. The auction lots consisted mostly of paintings, furniture and ornaments.

Among the highlights was a Victorian Revival-style bedroom suite that sold for $25,075. The set includes an armoire on whose ornate mirror the "Thriller" singer wrote a message in felt pen: "Train, perfection March April Full out May" -- presumably a reference to rehearsals for London's "This Is It" concerts set to start that July.

Other highlights included an 18th-century French clock, which sold for $9,375, a Regency-style desk ($4,375) and "Venus Blinding Cupid," an oil painting modeled on one by 16th-century artist Titian ($11,250).

A pottery rooster holding a chalkboard with a note from Jackson's children -- Prince, Paris and Blanket -- sold for $5,000.

Only a handful of auction items bore a personal connection to the singer and his family. Most were part of the rented surroundings.

"Anything associated with Michael Jackson is highly collectible," ," auctioneer Darren Julien said in the lead-up to the auction.

The ornate headboard on the bed where Jackson's body was found on June 25, 2009, was removed from the sale last month at the request of Jackson's family.

Egypt's military clashes with protesters in Cairo (AP)

CAIRO ? Egyptian soldiers clashed with hundreds of rock-throwing protesters in central Cairo for a second consecutive day on Saturday, hurling stones from rooftops and firing water from hoses in a crackdown that has left at least eight people dead.

The violence has brought to the fore the simmering tensions between security officers and activists demanding an end to military rule, and threatened to spark a new cycle of fighting after deadly clashes between youth revolutionaries and security forces in November that lasted for days and left more than 40 dead.

Early Saturday, hundreds of protesters hurled stones at security forces who have sealed off the streets around the country's parliament building with barbed wire and large concrete blocks. Soldiers on rooftops pelted the crowds below with stones, prompting many of the protesters to pick up helmets, satellite dishes or sheets of metal to try to protect themselves.

Stones, dirt and shattered glass covered the streets between the two sides, while flames came out of the windows of a two-story building set ablaze near parliament, sending thick plumes of black smoke into the sky.

Witnesses said soldiers wielding wooden sticks and dressed in riot gear chased protesters through the streets, forcing them to retreat to nearby Tahrir Square, which served as the epicenter of the uprising that toppled longtime leader Hosni Mubarak in February.

Later, soldiers stormed into Tahrir to disperse the protesters, and set fire to their tents. A huge cloud of black smoke hung over downtown Cairo as the tents burned.

There were reports of live gunfire from the rooftops, and the MENA state news agency said at least eight people have been killed and around 300 people injured in the two days of clashes.

Egypt's prime minister acknowledged that people had died from gunshot wounds, but denied the military and the police fired at protesters instead said "a group came from the back and fired at protesters" and said that his government is for "the salvation of the revolution."

The violence first began late Thursday after soldiers stormed an antimilitary protest camp outside the Cabinet building near Tahrir Square, expelling demonstrators demanding an end to military rule and an immediate transfer of power to a civilian authority. Witnesses said troops snatched a protester, taking him into the parliament building and beating him.

The soldiers later moved in, burning protesters' tents. Video footage and pictures showed military police in uniform dragging female protesters from hair, beating men and occupying rooftops of the Cabinet building.

The military took over after longtime President Hosni Mubarak was ousted in a popular revolt in February. Rights groups and activists charge that the military is carrying on the practices of the old regime, including arresting and beating dissidents.

Funerals were expected Saturday for those killed a day earlier. Among the dead was Sheik Emad Effat, a cleric from Al-Azhar, Egypt's most eminent religious institution. Effat had taken a pro-revolutionary position, criticizing the military and issuing a religious decree forbidding voting for former members of the regime in elections. He was shot in the chest after joining the protesters outside the Cabinet.

Many Egyptians have grown increasingly wary of the military and frustrated with its handling of the country's transition period, and activists accuse the ruling generals of trying to hang on to power.

El-Ganzouri, a Mubarak-era politician who was named prime minister few days after violent protests broke out last month, blamed demonstrators for fueling the latest clashes by demolishing a wall of the Cabinet building, setting fire to the building and smashing surveillance cameras.

He said that the military forces guarding the building from inside have not been taken part in the clashes. He added that protesters are not "the pure revolutionaries" he knew, saying "a 12-year old boy can't be a revolutionary."

"I feel very sad and in so much pain," he told reporters in a press conference aired on Egyptian state TV. "I stress here that the armed forces didn't engage with protesters and didn't leave the building."

Mustafa Ali, a protester who was wounded by pellet shot in clashes last month, on Saturday accused the ruling generals of instigating the violence to "find a justification to remain in power and divide up people into factions."

In a statement read on state TV Friday night, the ruling military said its forces did not intend to break up the protest and said officers showed self-restraint, denying the used any gunfire. It said the clashes began when a military officer was attacked while on duty and protesters tried to break into the parliament compound.

The young activists who led the protests against Mubarak have not translated that success into results at the polls, where Islamist parties won a clear majority of seats in the first round of voting last month over the more liberal parties that emerged from the uprising. Results from this week's second round are expected in the coming days, with the rest of the country set to vote next month.

Images of troops protecting polling centers and soldiers carrying the elderly to the polls have served to boost the military's image as guardians of the country. The military remains the ultimate authority on all matters of state in absence of a president.

The second round of voting took place Wednesday and Thursday in nine of the country's 27 provinces. It covered vast rural areas where the religious stand of Islamist parties has strong support.

Motorola could be on the hook for $16.2 billion in patent dispute with Apple

Motorola and Apple were in court Friday for a case in which the former is suing the Cupertino based company. Motorola alleges that Apple's iCloud infringes on patents for existing technology used for synchronization. During the hearing, Apple estimated that if Motorola seeks an preliminary injunction against iCloud now, it would have to post bond of $2.7 billion a year to cover Apple's losses in case a ban gets overturned. Considering that Florian Mueller of FOSS Patents was told by a Motorola attorney that the case could last until 2018, Motorola could be on the hook for as much as $16.2 billion to Apple.

While earlier reports said that it was likely that Motorola would win at least one of its German suits, Apple does have the right to set a bond figure to get damages in case it does win in appeal, a process that could take years. In Germany, those who receive a preliminary injunction against a product and/or company, can have it enforced immediately, even before appeal. However, as Apple pointed out in its bond request, if the preliminary injunction is reversed at the end of the process, the company whose product was banned could seek damages. In Germany, the end of the process means that the ruling can no longer be appealed, or that the next higher court refuses to hear the case.

To protect its interest, Apple could seek a bond from Motorola that originally was thought to be $2.7 billion for the entire length of the appeal process. Apple has now clarified this to be an annual figure that would be multiplied by the number of years that the case could last. Apple might have to prove to the courts that the product in question, in this case iCloud, generates revenue of $2.7 billion annually in Germany. A hearing is scheduled for February 3, 2012, when the court could reveal its decision on how much Apple's bond is worth.

Sometimes a patent holder will go along with posting a bond in order to have leverage against its opponent to work out a settlement. Until the court rules on February 3rd, there is no reason for Motorola to do anything.?
