As the weather warms up, the environment around your home can be very unfriendly in terms of all crawling creepy animals.

As the weather warms up, the environment around your home can be very unfriendly in terms of all crawling creepy animals. This will necessitate you to seek pest control measures to get rid of all kinds of sinister crawlers from your home before they cause damage to your health or furnishings. There are many techniques available in the market for commercial pest control but not all of them can be beneficial to you. If for example you have problems with rodent control pesticides available in Orange County, then you have to find alternative means of pest control that are chemical free.

It is important that you realize that some preventive measures can go a long way in helping you deal with pests in Los Angeles or wherever you may be. The most important idea you can implement in your home that works like commercial pest control is the sealing of leaks. It does not matter the kind of invasion that you may be experiencing, sealing leaks is one of the best techniques for bee control. When you seal off the entry point of the creepy crawlers, you are guaranteeing yourself control and savings from expensive pets control in Los Angeles. There are many things you can use to seal off entry points but silicone caulk does the trick best and is advisable for rodent and bee control. You can however use steel wool on holes that are used by mice, which is the most effective rodent control measure.

You can also device your own Orange county bug control method to get rid of bugs that may have entered your home. You should first start by sealing off the entry points and then dealing with the remaining crawlers in your home. You can use a damp cloth to block off their routes with wet cloth and prevent them from infesting your house. You then need to clean the floor with hot soapy water to remove the trails of the bugs to their interest. This Orange Country preventative method guarantees that the points of interest of the crawlers are removed and their traces wiped away so that they have nothing to feed on. It is important that you ensure that your Los Angeles home is always clean so that there is nothing to draw pests.

Since food is the greatest reason that bugs infest homes, you need to keep your home tidy and washed every time. Apart from cleaning the floors in way of pest control, you should also wash the counters and remove all debris of food that might still be on the shelves. Following these instructions will help you to get rid of your troubles on your own and effectively save on commercial pest control, which requires professionals. As much as you can rely on the home ideas to help you get rid of your troubles, you should also consult friends and family to advise you on better ways. This way you will only be using proven techniques that are safe and workable.

5 Million-Dollar Small Business Marketing Ingredients

small business marketing recipeSmall business marketing can be challenging. You aren't a big dog (yet) and certainly don't have a big dog budget. ?That doesn't mean that you can't craft a marketing plan that puts you in front of potential customers and generates sales.

To succeed, even the most fluid marketing campaigns need structure. Using your marketing funds needs to be an investment, not a cost. Your marketing plan should be creative, but it should also be pragmatic enough to yield sales in the most efficient ways possible.

Most successful online marketing campaigns have common elements that allow them to maximize their performance. Regardless of the vehicles in your small business marketing strategy, you?ll want to include the following elements for your "big-picture" marketing road map and allow them to trickle down to your individual efforts.

1. An Open Mind About Technology

Judgment is important, but it shouldn?t obscure your creativity or hold you back from testing a new idea. The online marketing landscape is highly dynamic and new technologies are emerging every day.

Never let your preconceived assumptions get the best of you. It doesn't hurt to try a new marketing tool, just don't go all in until you have seen that it can generate positive returns.

A new content platform, social media management tool, PR distribution channel, or other online marketing technology may be part of your future marketing success. What if you can create blog posts that use your target keywords more efficiently and drive more organic traffic? What if your press releases reach new media outlets and create relevant exposure for your company? What if a new social media management tool allows to to more effectively manage your relationships in less time?

Not every new marketing tool is right for you, and many are even a down right waste of time, but that doesn't mean that you shouldn't keep a watchful eye out for technology that can help you more effectively market your company.

2. A Pinch of Skepticism

When it comes to online marketing, you need to be on guard. There are plenty of "snake oil" salesmen in the online marketing game. You don?t want to end up in the hands of a shady SEO agency, and you don?t want to waste your PPC money on fraudulent clicks.

Keep an eye out for any and all warning signs that could threaten your marketing campaign?s integrity. In small doses, skepticism is extremely healthy. Ask potential marketing partners about past experience and to view a few case studies. Always trust your intuition. If it sounds to good, or too cheap to be true, it probably is.

3. Steadiness

With small business marketing, it will take time to see results. Viral videos aren?t for every brand, so don?t expect to become the next YouTube success story. To be more than a one-hit-wonder, you need to work hard at developing strong and consistent marketing momentum.

Even if you don?t see instant results, keep producing content every day. Write a new blog post, create a new e-book, plan an event, answer a question on a forum, post an update to your LinkedIn, Twitter, Facebook or Google+ profile.

Every company starts somewhere, so don?t let small numbers intimidate you. Keep moving forward and at full force. It?s the only way to grow.

4. Healthy Spontaneity

Who says that you always need to stick to your routine? Every once in a while, add something new to the mix. With marketing, it?s crucial that you continue to develop and test new ideas at regular intervals. Everything that you?re doing could be done better, and unless you give your theory a try, you?ll never know.

Try a new advertising channel, switch up your email heading, test out different ad copy, or try a new color background on your landing page. Just make sure that you?re A/B testing and watching your data so that you are collecting the most actionable insights possible.

5. Repetition & Adaptation

Repetition and change are equally healthy. You don?t need to change what?s working well, but you do need to learn and grow from your mistakes. Don?t be afraid of changes ? especially ones that will influence your marketing for the better.

Over time you can repeat the most successful components of your campaigns, and alter what hasn't worked so well. In the end, you will have a marketing strategy that is budget-friendly, efficient, high-performing and full of growth potential.

CERN?s Large Hadron Collider experiments bring new insight into matter of the primordial Universe

ScienceDaily (Aug. 13, 2012) ? Experiments using heavy ions at CERN's Large Hadron Collider (LHC) are advancing understanding of the primordial Universe. The ALICE, ATLAS and CMS collaborations have made new measurements of the kind of matter that probably existed in the first instants of the Universe. They will present their latest results at the 2012 Quark Matter conference, which starts August 13 in Washington DC. The new findings are based mainly on the four-week LHC run with lead ions in 2011, during which the experiments collected 20 times more data than in 2010.

Just after the Big Bang, quarks and gluons -- basic building blocks of matter -- were not confined inside composite particles such as protons and neutrons, as they are today. Instead, they moved freely in a state of matter known as 'quark-gluon plasma'. Collisions of lead ions in the LHC, the world's most powerful particle accelerator, recreate for a fleeting moment conditions similar to those of the early Universe. By examining a billion or so of these collisions, the experiments have been able to make more precise measurements of the properties of matter under these extreme conditions.

"The field of heavy-ion physics is crucial for probing the properties of matter in the primordial Universe, one of the key questions of fundamental physics that the LHC and its experiments are designed to address. It illustrates how in addition to the investigation of the recently discovered Higgs-like boson, physicists at the LHC are studying many other important phenomena in both proton-proton and lead-lead collisions," said CERN Director General Rolf Heuer.

At the conference, the ALICE, ATLAS and CMS collaborations will present more refined characterizations of the densest and hottest matter ever studied in the laboratory -- 100,000 times hotter than the interior of the Sun and denser than a neutron star.

ALICE will present a wealth of new results on all aspects of the evolution in both space and time of high-density strongly interacting matter. Important studies deal with "charmed particles," which contain a charm or anti-charm quark. Charm quarks, 100 times heavier than the up and down quarks that form normal matter, are significantly decelerated by their passage through quark-gluon plasma, offering scientists a unique tool to probe its properties. ALICE physicists will report indications that the flow in the plasma is so strong that the heavy charmed particles are dragged along by it. The experiment has also observed indications of a thermalization phenomenon, which involves the recombination of charm and anti-charm quarks to form "charmonium."

"This is only one leading example of the scientific opportunities in reach of the ALICE experiment," said Paolo Giubellino, spokesperson of the ALICE collaboration. "With more data still being analysed and further data-taking scheduled for next February, we are closer than ever to unravelling the properties of the primordial state of the Universe: the quark-gluon plasma."

In the 1980s, the initial dissociation of charmonium was proposed as a direct signature for the formation of quark-gluon plasma, and first experimental indications of this dissociation were reported from fixed-target experiments at CERN's Super Proton Synchrotron in 2000. The much higher energy of the LHC makes it possible for the first time to study similar tightly-bound states of the heavier beauty quarks. The hypothesis was that, depending on their binding energy, some of these states would "melt" in the plasma produced, while others would survive the extreme temperature. The CMS experiment now observes clear signs of the expected sequential suppression of the "quarkonium" (quark-antiquark) states.

"CMS will present important new heavy-ion results not only on quarkonium suppression, but also on bulk properties of the medium and on a variety of studies of jet quenching," said Joseph Incandela, the CMS Spokesperson. "We are entering an exciting new era of high-precision research on strongly interacting matter at the highest energies produced in the laboratory."

The quenching of jets is the phenomenon in which highly energetic sprays of particles break up in the dense quark-gluon plasma, giving scientists detailed information about the density and properties of the produced matter. ATLAS will report new findings on jet quenching, including a high-precision study of how the jets fragment in matter, and on the correlations between jets and electroweak bosons. The results are complementary to other exciting ones, including groundbreaking findings on the flow of the plasma.

"We have entered a new phase in which we not only observe the phenomenon of quark-gluon plasma, but where we can also make high-precision measurements using a variety of probes," said Fabiola Gianotti, the ATLAS spokesperson. "The studies will contribute significantly to our understanding of the early Universe."

Teachers have a significant role to perform in the development of a child?s overall knowledge. A primary educator will be accountable for educating many of the necessary knowledge and style that a child will probably need to relate with the world and to comprehend his journey through completely different situations. The lessons in proficiencies like reading, writing, and dealing with mathematical problems will be developed as a child moves on to greater stages and will retain with him all through his daily life as a knowledgeable and educated adult. There?s no doubt that an outstanding teacher provides a powerful impact on the basic foundation of a child?s perceptive abilities, emotional progress, and over-all outlook in life.

Plenty of people have the abilities and the determination to expect this essential task, while some may choose to practice different but equally valuable tasks within the classroom. Instead of study and get qualification to become a teacher in a certain stage, individuals thinking about a teaching position can choose to employ for part time teaching job opportunities as educating helpers.

In the U.K., teaching assistants usually employment in primary, secondary, or special schools. They offer necessary assistance to educators, facilitators, and pupils through a different range of educating roles. In some organizations, assistants may have overall tasks within a school room, while some may be designated to manage the education of a selected pupil or of a specified group of learners.

Training helper jobs in nurseries or primary educational institutions can be routine chores such as setting up the school room before students come in, proving art and craft works, managing play and dining spaces, escorting kids while having open air routines or expeditions, organising details, and liaising with guardians, carers, along with other teaching professionals.

Typically, there are no set prerequisites for a educating assistant?s skills, however, many organizations would favor that job hopefuls have nationally recognized credentials. They have to be at least Eighteen years of age to begin training in the field and those with applicable knowledge in nursery nursing and play task can be pondered. Volunteer assistants in schools can also train as teaching helpers at the same time. Job hopefuls with no previous knowledge in working with students or in education would be advisable to obtain distinct vocational skills.

Colin Murray: London 2012 will go down as most ... - BBC World News

In his Metro column Colin Murray celebrates the major non-sporting achievements from the London 2012 Olympic Games including the volunteers and the Queen?s appearance with Daniel Craig. The Queen joined Daniel Craig on screen during the Olympics (Picture: Getty) In every newspaper today, there will be countless column inches devoted to London 2012, most of which will eulogise about the success of the past 17 days, and I?m afraid I can see no other option but to join them. However, I have decided to avoid all mentions of sporting achievement and instead concentrate on the off-track endeavours, and keep this as simple as I can. I know it seems like a year ago but having the Queen act with Daniel Craig has to be one of, if not the most, memorable moment of any opening ceremony. In 50 years from now, people will look at that footage and assume it?s a lookalike. One of the problems with modern-day Olympics is striking the balance between the sport and the sponsors, as all too often you feel like you are in an ad break rather than a stadium. London 2012 managed it better than any host nation before them, keeping the sponsors outside of the arenas, allowing them their chance to promote their wares on walkways and thoroughfares, but never when sport was the priority. And here comes the cliche ? the volunteers. More than 70,000 of them, working for free and always with a smile on their collective face. They were singing songs, busting moves and making every correspondence with the public a pleasure. Beside them, almost always, stood members of the armed forces, more used to watching their backs in Basra than checking bags for bottles. Yet, if anything, they made the volunteers look like Victor Meldrew. Not everything has been rosy in the Olympic garden, and the thorny issue of empty seats will remain an abiding memory, but while it was a bone of contention, I hope it?s tempered by three things? Firstly, Locog?s swift reaction to right the wrong and make hundreds of thousands more tickets available. Secondly, the fact the empty seats were not for the chosen few should they wish to use them, but various member nations who had not taken advantage of their allocation. And most importantly, London 2012 will go down in history as the most attended games ever, and that?s due to the overwhelming enthusiasm and open arms with which the people of this nation have greeted them. It has also been the greenest Olympics of all time, so well done to everyone who separated their plastics from their paper. And now the boring bit ? legacy! We will see what happens with the Olympic Stadium but, in terms of the makeshift stadiums that will now be packed away or flogged to the highest bidder, set against the wonderful velodrome and aquatics centre that will help our future stars and attract more regular international competition, the vision of organisers can only be applauded. And, of course, there was the sense of community that swept the nation. It will dissipate, to some degree, but London 2012 may well have removed a sizeable amount of the cynicism that marks much of our non-Olympic mind-set.

My Road to Becoming a Landlord (Free Money Finance)

Over the past several months, a few events have conspired to make me consider investing in rental real estate. I thought you all might enjoy hearing about what has happened as well as my thinking along the way. And since there are at least a handful of FMF readers who are experienced real estate investors, I thought I might pick up a bit of useful advice as well. :)

It all started several years ago when my son began playing basketball. A couple years into the process, a new family joined the team. Their sons had never played basketball, but they were both over 6 feet tall (at 14!) and still growing. It became my project as assistant coach to help them get up to speed as quickly as possible (FYI, several years later, they are both good/above average players.)

As a result of this effort, our family got to know the boys' family quite well. We saw each other at practices, interacted at games, and eventually got together a handful of times at their house (they live on a lake -- a PERFECT location on a hot, summer day.) During these times I initially found out that the father did something in real estate. Ultimately I discovered he sold (as a real estate agent), purchased and flipped, and bought and rented out real estate. This was his sole means of income, and while they weren't extravagantly wealthy, they were doing fine financially (at least from outward appearance, which I know can be deceiving.) Better yet, as I got to know them he seemed both knowledgeable (he seems to know what does work and doesn't in real estate -- and very practical in his knowledge) and trustworthy.

I never really thought about his business and how it could apply to me until two things happened:

  • I began to wonder about inflation -- as I've written about recently -- and what my hedge would be in case it began growing out of control. I think that owning something, a physical asset that has value, could be a decent hedge against rampant inflation. For me, gold is too pricey and commodities seem too difficult. But real estate, which we all know has been beaten down in price, seemed like a viable option.

  • As I began to consider rental real estate specifically, I realized that this could be a great way to fund a retirement or early retirement income. (I know, I'm not sure what took me so long to come to this conclusion, but I am a little slow sometimes.) For instance, if I took a sizeable portion of my investments (most in various index funds) and converted them to rental real estate, I could develop a very decent level of income that could fund an on-going retirement income stream.

I then decided to find out a bit more about real estate in my market, so I asked my friend (the dad of the basketball boys) to lunch to discuss the subject. Bob (not his real name) was kind enough to accept the offer. He spent an hour and a half answering my questions about rental real estate in general as well as the specifics of what's happening in our market. He also volunteered to drive me around if I actually wanted to see different parts of town or even meet again if I had more questions.

During our conversation I asked him about potential returns in our area. He answered as follows:

  • In our market, there's a spectrum of what you can earn on rental real estate.

  • On one end, you can earn a great deal (I don't believe he gave me a percentage). But the homes are in "the hood", there will be a lot of tenant hassles, and potentially a lot of fix-up/maintenance costs because the houses are older. But because you can get the homes so cheaply and the rents are at least decent (if you can keep the places occupied), you can earn a great deal -- IF you want to deal with what is almost guaranteed to be a hassle property to manage.

  • On the other end of the spectrum are homes in the very best areas of town. This is where everyone wants to live and where many real estate investors want to invest. There's prestige in owning homes in these areas. The tenants are also generally better and the properties newer. As a result, the homes are priced higher and because rents can only go so high and expenses are high (like real estate taxes), the return isn't that great.

  • He said that he wouldn't recommend either end of the spectrum, but somewhere in the middle based on what I was comfortable with for a return and "hassle factor."

From that meeting I took three months and read every library book I could find on rental real estate. Along the way I took notes and developed questions. I also searched online for more details and specifics. Then after I had this accumulated "book knowledge", I called Bob back and set up another lunch. We discussed various topics and he answered my questions.

Then I asked him a point blank question:

Can I invest in rental real estate in our market, not in the worst areas of town but in "decent" areas, and earn 10% income back on my investment after expenses but before taxes and depreciation?

He said I could. He then told me that he has about $500,000 invested in real estate and earns about $80,000 a year on it.

We then had a bit more discussion and decided on the following plan of attack:

  • I would make $300,000 available to invest in rental real estate.

  • I would invest in 100% cash -- not borrowing any money. Yes, I understand leverage, but if you've read FMF for more than 15 seconds you'll understand that debt and I don't get along. Besides, there is NO WAY my wife would take on debt. At least for now. :)

  • The goal for him would be to find me properties that would earn at least 10% income on the investment before taxes (FYI, these are personal taxes -- real estate taxes on the property would be included in the expenses) and depreciation.

  • The places would be in "decent" neighborhoods and be low to moderate on the "tenant hassle factor" scale.

  • He would search and recommend properties that fit this criteria based on his knowledge of the marketplace and our city. I can't understate how valuable this service has been since we started the process. If I had started this on my own, I would be lost and/or have made several very bad mistakes.

  • I would use him to purchase any properties that were identified in this way, hence he would be compensated by the real estate commission.

  • If we were successful in generating the 10% (or more) return on the $300k, I could make more money available to purchase additional properties. (I'm thinking about it this way, if I can earn 10% back on my money, I can develop a very nice and steady income -- an income that could easily help fund retirement or early semi-retirement. For example, if $500k would earn me $50,000 a year, that's a pretty good start on a retirement salary.)

  • We would diversify the purchases by looking to acquire properties with various prices, in various parts of town, with various types of tenants, and so on.

And that's how it began.

Bob set me up with a regular email notice where I get updates when new rental properties hit the market. He also sent me everything for sale in the rental market within our main county. I looked through 200 or so different properties (on paper), trying to determine a pattern for what works and what doesn't (or at least some sense of what is a good deal and what isn't). He also has started to send me details on places that have sold. He includes his best guess on what the rents were for each property. This way I can estimate the sort of returns people are getting on their investments.

The process is working quite well so far. He sends me stuff he thinks could work and I ask questions. Then we decide how to proceed. More often, I get an automated email and think a property might work. But 9 times out of 10 he says something like "you don't want to own a place in that part of town", "I was in that house last week and it leans significantly to one side -- it has bad structural issues", and the like. In other words, he discourages me away from properties way more than encouraging me to consider a purchase -- which is EXACTLY what I'm looking for in an advisor, someone who is as picky as me.

I'll give more details of how I'm evaluating properties and the like in a future post, but for now I've rambled on long enough. However, to bring this post to a complete close I should address where I got the $300k to invest. It came from the following sources:

  • I took some out of my emergency fund. The fund was way over-funded -- well more than six months of living expenses in it. So I took it down to 6-month levels.

  • Some CDs (that were earning next to nothing) matured.

  • I sold some shares in my Vanguard REIT index fund.

BTW, I considered buying properties through one of my IRAs, but since I may want access to the income prior to retirement AND there are added fees (in the neighborhood of 1%) with purchasing this way, my CPA advised me not to buy through an IRA.

In conclusion, I want to note that in the returns above I am not factoring in any benefit of potential property appreciation. This could be substantial over a long period of time given that real estate is priced near its low point. In 10 years, what I buy now will probably not be worth less than what I paid for it and could be worth a lot more.

CE-Oh no he didn't!: Acer's JT Wang tells Microsoft to 'think twice' about Surface

CEOh no he didn't Acer's JT Wang tells Microsoft to 'think twice' about making Surface

Acer executives have criticized Microsoft's decision to build its own tablet in the past, but now the firm's CEO has offered Redmond a more direct warning. "We have said [to Microsoft] think it over," Acer CEO JT Wang told the Financial Times. "Think Twice. It will create a huge negative impact for the ecosystem and other brands may take a negative reaction." Microsoft has acknowledged Surface's potential to frustrate its OEM partners, telling the Security and Exchange Commission that competing directly with manufactures might "affect their commitment" to the firm's platform. Not only does Wang agree with this admission, he seems worried that Microsoft will cause this damage for nothing. "It is not something you are good at," he continued, "so please think twice." Polite, but a bit bold. Then again, Acer has never been shy about telling Microsoft exactly what it thinks.

Lighthouses still a beacon for coastal visitors

Courtesy of the United States Lighthouse Society

Portland Head Light stands at Cape Elizabeth, Maine, and was first lit on Jan. 10, 1791, using 16 whale oil lamps.

By A. Pawlowski, NBC News contributor

Tanned bodies may catch the eye at the beach, but few seaside attractions capture the heart quite like lighthouses.

?Lighthouses are to America what castles are to Europe,? said James Hyland, president of The Lighthouse Preservation Society, a nonprofit organization in Dover, N.H.

?There?s so much folklore and legend surrounding them," he said. "They?re all distinctive and they?re all kind of like exclamation points along our coastline.?

Some people are drawn by their history, mystique and picturesque locations. For others,?it?s all about what lighthouses symbolize.

?

?To a religious person, they?re light against the darkness,? said Wayne Wheeler, president of the nonprofit United States Lighthouse Society in Hansville, Wash.??For some, it?s a symbol of a happy time at the beach or on the lakeshore.?

No matter what the appeal, this might be the perfect time for a visit. National Lighthouse Day is Aug. 7, marking the date in 1789 when Congress put lighthouses under the control of the federal government.

To commemorate the occasion, many lighthouses are holding open houses, offering reduced or free admission, and showcasing new exhibits.

From the East Coast to the West Coast, from the Great Lakes to the Florida Keys, there are hundreds of destinations to choose from.

The best-known site may be the black-and-white-striped Cape Hatteras Light Station in North Carolina -- at 210 feet, the tallest brick lighthouse in the United States -- but everyone seems to have their favorites.

Wheeler loves the Split Rock Lighthouse in Two Harbors, Minn. (motto: ?Before GPS there was a really big light?), the Ponce de Leon Inlet Lighthouse in?Ponce Inlet, Fla.,?and the Point Sur Light Station in Big Sur, Calif.

Hyland is fascinated by the imposing?Navesink Lighthouse in Navesink, N.J.?

We want to see your lighthouse photos! Click on the "Add Photos" button below to submit your lighthouse photos and we will publish a selection of the best.

About 1,800 light stations were built in the United States over the years, Wheeler said. The first began appearing in the 1700s to help guide the commerce of the day. With no planes, no automobiles and few trains, water was key to transporting people and goods. Lighthouses were essential in helping guide ships and warn of treacherous areas.

Ship captains often used lighthouses as landmarks so the structures were painted in different colors and with stripes, spirals, or diamond patterns to make them look distinctive.

Of the original structures, just over 600 remain, Wheeler said. Some are still in service, while others have been transformed into museums, bed & breakfasts, and hostels. The National Park Service keeps a list of historic lighthouses you can visit.?

Lighthouses can be square, round, conical, rectangular or octagonal, according to The Lighthouse Preservation Society, and often reflect the architectural styles of their day.

?They?re kind of like people, really," Hyland said. "They?re all different. They?re all beautiful in their own way,??

ARM's eight-core Mali GPUs promise 'dramatic' boost to mobile graphics

ARM answers call for even more powerful eightcore mobile graphics

The current flagship for ARM's mobile graphics technology is undoubtedly the Galaxy S III, which contains a quad-core Mali 400 GPU and delivers some wild benchmark scores. By the end of this year though, we should see a whole new generation of Malis -- not just a Mali 450 for mid-range handsets, but also the quad-core T604 and the eight-core T658, which are based on ARM's Midgard architecture and are taking forever to come to market. Now, to whet our appetites even further, ARM has just added three more variants of the chip to its roster, which can almost be considered the next-next-generation: the quad-core T624, and the T628 and T678, which are both scalable up to eight cores.

The trio's headline feature is that they promise to deliver at least 50 percent more performance with the same silicon area and power draw, with the explicit aim of delivering "console-class gaming," 4K and even 8K video workloads, as well as buttery 60fps user interfaces in phones, tablets and smart TVs. The premium T678 is aimed at tablets specifically, and in addition to allowing up to eight cores also doubles the number of math-crunching ALUs per core, which means that its compute performance (measured in gigaflops) is actually quadrupled compared to the T624. However, there's one other, subtler change which could turn out to be equally important -- read on for more.

Washington Conservation Corps looking to fill 300 positions

The Department of Ecology?s Washington Conservation Corps (WCC) is looking for applicants to fill nearly 300 AmeriCorps service positions in 16 counties across the state.

The WCC was created in 1983 and has provided opportunities and training for more than 1,700 young adults. In 1994, WCC started received federal AmeriCorps funding, allowing crews to carry out on-the-ground projects across the state. Local communities rely on WCC to complete environmental projects by forming cost-share agreements with Ecology.

Typical WCC activities include planting trees and vegetation, repairing stream and streamside habitat, constructing and upgrading trails, building fencing and providing environmental education.

The WCC also includes the Puget SoundCorps, formed in 2011, to complete projects on public lands designed to help carry out the Puget Sound Partnership?s Action Agenda ? the single playbook for focusing efforts to recover and protect the Sound.

Last year, WCC members planted 940,000 trees and shrubs, improved or restored 1,100 acres of new fish and wildlife habitat and constructed or improved 400 miles of recreational trails.

The WCC also helps communities cope with natural disasters by responding to and removing storm, flood, fire and other debris and recruiting and managing emergency response volunteers. In 2012, members assisted with flood response near Ellensburg, wild land firefighting near Entiat, and marine debris cleanup along coastal beaches in southwest Washington.

Most members work in six-member crews, but the WCC also provides opportunities for individuals to serve with natural resource organizations throughout Washington.

The upcoming WCC AmeriCorps service year starts Oct. 1, 2012 and ends Sept. 19, 2013. Job seekers can apply at www.ecy.wa.gov/wcc/memberpositions.html.

In addition, Ecology will be recruiting up to 14 crew supervisor positions to manage new crew members in the field. To apply, go to www.ecy.wa.gov/wcc/supervisor.html.

WCC positions for this coming service year are being supported by:

$277,000 in AmeriCorps Education Awards from the Corps Network, a national service partner.

$950,000 from Ecology.

$1.9 million from the Washington State Commission for National and Community Service.

$4.2 million from the Washington Department of Natural Resources (DNR) through the 2012 Washington Jobs Now Act.

The Jobs Now Act was passed by the 2012 Washington Legislature and authorizes $500 million in new general obligation bonds to finance public construction and energy efficiency retrofitting projects, improve water quality and clean up the environment.

The act expands the Puget SoundCorps. Most SoundCorps crews are made up of young adults from 18 to 25 years old, but several crews will include opportunities for military veterans who will work on DNR urban forestry projects in King and Pierce counties. Age restrictions for military veterans may be waived.

The Jobs Now Act also provides opportunities for veterans to serve as part of a new trail crew in Mason County or on urban forestry projects in Clark County.

AmeriCorps service affords military veterans the opportunity to continue serving their communities and country while gaining new skills and contacts in the environmental field. Corps members will earn certifications in emergency management and environmental topics? and get assistance from the state Department of Veterans Affairs.

WCC members earn $9.04 an hour and receive a $5,550 AmeriCorps education award upon completing their service year. The award may be used for student loans or future tuition expenses.

In Short Term, Weight-Loss Surgery Doesn't Raise Fracture Risk

TUESDAY, Aug. 7 (HealthDay News) -- Obese people who undergo weight-loss surgery, such as gastric bypass or gastric band, are not at greater risk for broken bones in the first few years after their operation, according to a new study. Three to five years after this type of surgery, however, these patients may face an increased risk of fractures.

"It has been recognized that surgical treatment is the most effective route to weight loss for many with morbid obesity," Dr. Nicholas Harvey, senior lecturer at the Medical Research Council Lifecourse Epidemiology Unit at the University of Southampton, in England, said in a school news release. "Overall, for the first few post-operative years, these results are reassuring for patients undergoing bariatric surgery, but do not exclude a more protracted adverse influence on skeletal health."

In previous studies, weight loss alone has been shown to reduce patients' bone density, the researchers said, and weight-loss surgery also has been linked to a loss of bone density.

For the new study, researchers compared rates of broken bones among people who had weight-loss surgery between 1987 and 2010 with similar people of the same age, sex and body-mass index who didn't have the surgery. Body-mass index (BMI) is a measure of body fat based on height and weight.

The risk of broken bones was not much higher for patients who had weight-loss surgery in the three years after their operation. The risk inched upward from three to five years after the surgery, and patients with a more significant drop in their body-mass index had a slightly higher risk for fractures, the researchers noted.

"This is the first time that we have been able to investigate risk of fracture following bariatric surgery by comparing patients with nonsurgical controls," Cyrus Cooper, professor of rheumatology and director of the Medical Research Council Lifecourse Epidemiology Unit, said in the news release. "The results suggest that, at least in the short term, such changes in bone density are unlikely to lead to increased fracture risk."

The study was published Aug. 7 in the British Medical Journal.

Pest,Control,Service,Termite,Exterminat - How To Control Garden ...

Pest,Control,Service,Termite,Exterminat More Details about Pest,Control,Service,Termite,Exterminat here.

When I first started gardening it was an attempt to spruce up the garden of the house we had just bought. I started pottering around in the hope of turning it into a presentable space which the family could use. I was new to gardening and open to suggestions and tips coming in from our new neighbors. A neighbor invited me to see her garden. This lady was an old hand and took pride in being an organic gardener. I was impressed with the lovely garden she maintained and all she told me about organic gardening. I soon became obsessed with the idea of starting my own organic garden. This happened many years ago and my love affair with organic gardening continues.

I earnestly took up organic gardening with the help of my neighbor and learned new things from books on the subject. Today my garden is completely organic; I fight pests and weeds through organic methods and completely avoid use of herbicides and pesticides.

Everyone who owns a garden knows how difficult it is to deal with weeds. I struggled for years trying to rid my garden of crab grass. I tried all the organic tricks mentioned in books but nothing seemed to work on the stubborn weeds. I laid down mulch as the books suggested in the hope of stifling the weed; but found to my dismay that it was resilient and impossible to drive away. When all my efforts failed I was tempted to use chemical sprays to fight the weed but resorted to pulling it out from the roots instead.

Fortunately I chanced upon an article on weeds that recommended a method I call dust mulching. The article impressed me as the author seemed an authority on the subject. I decided to try dust mulching in my garden to contain the weeds and was pleased to see the procedure work. I share with you the method.

Since crab grass and other weeds thrive in firm soil which provides moisture and supports growth I recommend soil around the plants and in between rows be loosely packed and allowed to dry. This technique is not as easy as it sounds. It requires a great deal of meticulousness and resoluteness on your part. You will need to ensure the soil always remains dry and does not compress after the garden has been watered or after a downpour. You will need to rake the soil along the rows and around the plants each time the soil gets watered. Though the effort involved is tremendous, the result is fruitful.

I use a steel rake that resembles a comb with closely placed tines. These are available in varying sizes and you can pick two in different sizes to accomplish dust mulching. I have two rakes; the large one is a little over a foot in width and the smaller of the two is around 8". The bigger rake is ideal for raking soil in between rows and I use the smaller one to loosen soil around plants. You need to loosen just the top soil to keep your garden weed free.

I am glad I tried controlling weeds through consistent cultivation, which is a completely organic method. I have found this method to be the most effective in keeping crab grass and other weeds from growing in my garden.

Emily Taylor is a kindhearted individual who loves the outdoors; she spends most of her time lately working in her yard and tending to her garden if she isn?t writing for Vulcantermite.com. Just Bri: Long Distance Lovin' - Jessica

Hello Lovelies!?

When I heard about Bri's Long Distance Lovin' series, I knew I had to be a part of it.

I think my story is kind of unique because I have lived through both the good and the bad (and the ugly) of long distance relationships (for the sake of repetition, let's call this an LD relationship). I've been through more than one serious LD relationship. (It just kind of happened that way. You can't choose who you fall in love with, right?) My last LD relationship lead to marriage and I could not be happier! :)?

I know every relationship is different, but I can tell you what did and didn't work for me. There are 4 things that I think make or break a LD relationship. I'm a list person, so here we go!

1. Communicate. This is obviously so important in any relationship but especially in a LD one. LD relationships don't have the luxury of being physically there with each other all the time. So tell each other about your day. Tell your partner about that coffee shop down the street that you love and that new girl at the office who is totally driving you crazy. That way when you guys are together, it's more real. You'll walk down the street with him and he will say "Hey, that's that coffee shop you like, right?" and you'll smile because it's like he's been there all along. 2. Trust. Trust and communication. They go hand in hand. In a failed LD relationship that I had, we had little communication. Sure we talked on the phone a lot but he never really mentioned his life. I didn't know about the little things like his favorite thing to eat for breakfast or who was in that group that he went to the movies with. It lead to problems. A lot of them. If that girl wasn't a big deal then why didn't he ever mention her before? Is he seeing her? If I didn't know about her, does she know about me? Yes, I did turn into one of those psycho girlfriends, but I had good reason. He actually was cheating on me. More than once. And in 4 years, I never knew. This is the ugly part that I mentioned earlier. let's not go too much into that though. The point is that I should have known from the beginning that our lack of communication meant that I couldn't trust him. Without trust, there's nothing. 3. Be normal. What I mean by this is just because you are in a LD relationship, doesn't mean you have to miss out on everything that "normal" relationships have. Set up Skype dates. Watch a movie together (just play the movie at the same time). Eat the same dinner. The possibilities are endless! Before Jared and I got married and moved in together, we had date nights via Skype all the time. Sometimes we even played drinking games which always turned out to be pretty hilarious. Get creative!

4. Stay positive. If you don't believe that it will work, then it won't. You have to stay positive for each other. I always had a really hard time with this especially because of my previous relationships. Thank God I was with someone who lifted me up and stayed strong enough for the both of us.

There are obviously a ton of things that factor into making a relationship work, but I really think that these are the basics to make a long distance one work. You can read more about my long distance journey with Jared and how we ended up deciding to tie the knot here. I can honestly say that our marriage was worth the wait.

Thank you so much for having me on Just Bri today! I tried to keep this short and sweet but if you want to talk more, I'd love to get to know you!

retirement planning More Details about retirement planning here.

Financial planning is an important step towards retirement planning. It is important to have financial planning goals set before embarking on this crucial exercise. In this exercise, you have to make sure that your income after retirement from your investments is sufficient to maintain your current lifestyle. Certain basic assumptions on inflation, interest rates, returns on your investment etc are required. Usually financial planning for retirement is recommended at a young age. When you are young, you have multiple avenues for investment. Equities, Bonds, Real Estate, Bullion are some of the most common asset classes that go into your asset allocation during financial planning. Depending on your age, risk appetite and expected returns you can distribute your savings in some or all of these asst classes. A financial planner with a CFP might be required if you intend to seek professional advice.

Asset allocation is an important part of financial planning. Asset allocation is the method of allocating your savings into multiple asset classes to achieve many important goals. One of the most important goals is diversification which aims to reduce asset specific risks. For instance, you invest in multiple stocks to avoid company specific risks. Diversification is an important part of financial planning. The different asset classes behave differently to economic data. Hence in most circumstances, they are not highly correlated. It is important to look out for assets whose returns have a very low or negative correlation. Another important goal of asset allocation is to build a portfolio which is in line with the investor's investment objectives and provides a good risk-adjusted return. Asset allocation into the asset allocation also depends on the age and risk appetite. For instance, a person in his early twenties can afford to allocate more than 70 percent of his savings to equity if he is doing retirement planning. However, if the same person is investing for the purpose of higher education, it is recommended not to allocate more than 30 percent to equities.

Some asset classes are more risky than others. Equities as an asset class are certainly more risky than bonds. Risk usually refers to uncertainty of returns and can be easily measured by calculating the standard deviation of returns. It is always best to look out for reasonable risk adjusted return. Financial planning for retirement can also be done purely by investing in income generating instruments. Income generating instruments are dividend stocks, bonds and property. Dividend stocks with a good dividend yield pay regular dividend. This can be a potential income during after retiring. Bonds and fixed income securities pay coupon on a specific principal. Investments in property may generate significant rent. Hence while performing retirement planning; it is good to allocate significant portion your savings into income generating instruments. Investment is gold and other asset classes are recommended purely for diversification purpose. Financial planning if done sensibly and early on can help you achieve your financial goals. Investing monthly into your retirement account can help you invest in a disciplined manner. This can also save you taxes on dividends and other returns until later. It is always best to consider various options and select the one which suits your preferences.

Mexican artist works with Costa Mesa teens to create mural - OC ...

This story was written by OCR intern Stephanie Weldy:?

Slowly, 14-year-old Cheyenne Brown traces a brush along the petals of a giant flower, outlining each yellow leaf in a mellow streak of pink.

Alongside her, Mexican muralist Daniel Camacho, 50, adds his own signature touches to the mural, which is being painted outside of the Save Our Youth center on the grounds of Rea Elementary School.

For four days Camacho ? whose murals and other works have been displayed at the Cesar Chavez Library in Oakland as well as in Mexico and Germany ? worked with eight SOY teens to create the mural, titled ?Harvesting Your Dreams.?

The mural depicts hands gripping onto multicolored flowers, each portraying elements essential for an adolescent?s positive growth.

One flower is shown with an open book with a tree sprouting from its pages; another flower portrays a soccer ball. A third shows the face of the sun and the moon, which Camacho said represents creativity.

Camacho, who works to bring awareness to Mexican and Latino culture through his art, said the mural is meant to show what adolescents need to focus on in order to accomplish their goals.

?You have a garden,? Camacho said of the mural created from spray paint and acrylics. ?You feed it with water and with food and then you have a beautiful garden. It?s symbolic about where we are now and where we will be.?

Save Our Youth, a non-profit organization that provides free after-school care and academic enrichment for Newport-Mesa Unified School students, originally started in the 1990s as a violence prevention program.

The program now focuses on encouraging students to stay in school and to strive for higher education.

Save Our Youth ? which is funded through private donations, grants and fundraisers ? keeps youth from schools such as Costa Mesa High School and Back Bay Continuation School from being on the streets.

It offers tutoring, homework help, plus art and music activities, including DJing and art and talent shows and provides a place for kids to hang out after school.

Liliana Ovandu, 18, has attended the program since seventh grade. The Orange Coast College student said the programs offered through Save Our Youth got her through her difficult times.

?The music (program) helped me a lot. When I was in middle school?I was growing up, I didn?t know what I was doing with myself?I was getting depressed and music helped me a lot,? she said. ?It was nice coming here and receiving help. They keep you on track and they know what?s good for you.?

Eduardo Iniestra ? arts and music program coordinator for the organization ? said that through the mural project, he tried to get as many kids as possible to work together to create a work of art.

?My goal is to empower them through art,? said Iniestra, 30, who also attended SOY as a student. ?Whatever they want to do, they have more confidence to do it because they have done a show, they have painted a mural.?

Camacho said he supports projects such as this because they keep youth from getting involved in dangerous activities.

?If the kids don?t have these programs they are going to get loose in life,? Camacho said.

Camacho, who was born in Mexico City and now lives in Oakland, has dabbled in art for the past 33 years. He was invited to work with participants of the Save Our Youth program by one of the program?s directors, Bobby Lovell, who is also his mother-in-law.

Camacho has painted numerous murals throughout the world, including in the Czech Republic and Costa Rica. His work hangs in the National Museum of Art in Chicago, among other venues.

The muralist has been helping non-profit organizations for much of the time that he has been engaged in art.

?I?ve been working with non-profits for around 25 years I really like to contribute to these kinds of things because I am part of these people,? Camacho said. ?And I feel like I have to do something with them to help them grow. For me it was hard to go to a university when I was young and I know how hard it is for them to do the same thing in neighborhoods like this.?

Iniestra said that the program is always looking for volunteers and donors. He said the group is in need of a patient volunteer who can help teach children how to play one of the many instruments that are available at Save Our Youth.
