My plan for cardio was to do HIIT on the treadmill but all the?treadmills were being used at the gym.?I ran a few laps around the track before going back inside the gym to finish off my cardio.?My knee has been bothering me lately. I am way?overdue?for new shoes. Running in worn-out shoes is one of the most common causes of running injuries. A good rule of thumb is to change your shoes every 300 to 400 miles. Well I am way past that amount. I'm going to hold off on running until I can get a new pair of shoes next week.?

Iran hangs 10 drug smugglers: report

DUBAI (Reuters) - Iran hanged 10 people convicted of drug trafficking on Monday, the semi-official Mehr news agency reported, less than a week after Amnesty International urged the Islamic state to end executions.

Mass executions are regular events in Tehran, and the latest took place in a prison in the capital. The judiciary said those hanged were members of two drug smuggling gangs, Mehr said.

Iran invariably dismisses criticism from Western human rights groups over its high rate of executions, saying it is implementing Islamic law and responding to a major drugs problem.

Last week, Amnesty urged Iranian authorities to commute all death sentences and remove the penalty as a possible punishment. The London-based human rights watchdog said in a statement it believed 344 people had been executed in Iran since March.

Iran is a transit route for narcotics smuggled from neighboring Afghanistan, which produces more than 90 percent of the world's opium. According to the country's media, more than 3,500 Iranian soldiers have been killed in clashes with drug smugglers since the 1979 Islamic revolution.

Among those executed on Monday was Saeed Sedighi, who Amnesty said "appears to have had no opportunity to appeal against his conviction and sentence".

Murder, adultery, rape, armed robbery, drug trafficking and apostasy - the renouncing of Islam - are all punishable by death under the Islamic judicial code that Iran adopted after the revolution.

'Blue' light could help teenagers combat stress

ScienceDaily (Oct. 22, 2012) ? Adolescents can be chronically sleep deprived because of their inability to fall asleep early in combination with fixed wakeup times on school days. According to the CDC, almost 70 percent of school children get insufficient sleep -- less than 8 hours on school nights. This type of restricted sleep schedule has been linked with depression, behavior problems, poor performance at school, drug use, and automobile accidents. A new study from the Lighting Research Center (LRC) at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute shows that exposure to morning short-wavelength "blue" light has the potential to help sleep-deprived adolescents prepare for the challenges of the day and deal with stress, more so than dim light.

The study was a collaboration between Associate Professor and Director of the LRC Light and Health Program Mariana Figueiro and LRC Director and Professor Mark S. Rea. Results of the study were recently published in the open access International Journal of Endocrinology. ?

Levels of cortisol, a hormone produced by the adrenal gland, follow a daily 24-hour rhythm. Cortisol concentrations are low throughout the day reaching a broad minimum in the evening before rising slowly again throughout the night. In addition to this gradual elevation of cortisol at night, cortisol levels rise sharply within the first 30 to 60 minutes after waking. This is known as the cortisol awakening response (CAR). In nocturnal animals, the cortisol spike occurs at night, at the start of activity. It appears to be associated with the time of transition from rest to activity, upon waking. A high CAR has been associated with better preparedness for stressful and challenging activities.

"The present results are the first to show that low levels of short-wavelength light enhance CAR in adolescents who were restricted from sleep," said Figueiro. "Morning light exposure may help to wake up the body when it is time to be active, thus preparing individuals for any environmental stress they might experience."

Short-wavelength light has been shown to maximally suppress production of nocturnal melatonin and phase shift the timing of the biological clock. The effect of short-wavelength light on other biomarkers has not been widely studied.

The study included three overnight sessions, at least one week apart. All participants wore a Dimesimeter on a wrist band to measure light exposure and to verify the regularity of their activity/rest periods during the three-week study. The Dimesimeter is a small calibrated light meter device developed by the LRC that continuously records circadian light and activity levels. During the study, adolescents aged 12 to 17 years went to sleep at 1:30 a.m. and woke up at 6:00 a.m., a 4.5-hour sleep opportunity. Each week, participants either experienced morning short-wavelength blue light (40 lux of 470-nanometer light) or remained in dim light.

"We found that exposure to short-wavelength blue light in the morning significantly enhances CAR in sleep deprived adolescents, more so than dim light," said Rea. "Morning exposure to short-wavelength light may be a simple, yet practical way to better prepare adolescents for the challenges of the day."

Weak earnings season casts?pall over stocks

    Andrew Burton / Getty Images

A trader works on the floor of the New York Stock Exchange on October 19, 2012 in New York City. Stocks fell Friday after the release of poor earnings reports. Analysts say they expect more earnings-related angst to come.

    By Caroline Valetkevitch, Reuters

U.S. earnings started the quarter on the wrong foot, and things have only gotten worse.

Expectations for the third quarter were dismal, with forecasts for a decline in profits from a year ago. But a recent flurry of high-profile reports has investors scowling at the weak revenue numbers, adding to worries about the state of the U.S. economy and the outlook for corporate America.

"The earnings season is not looking very bright," said Larry Peruzzi, senior equity trader at Cabrera Capital Markets Inc., in Boston.

International Business Machines , General Electric and Microsoft fell short of revenue expectations, creating a sour mood early in the third-quarter reporting period.

The third quarter is among the most important for investors and economists because it is when companies begin to give a better picture of what the following year may look like.?

The pace of earnings reports will accelerate next week, with eight Dow components and 155 S&P 500 companies scheduled to release results. Tech heavyweight Apple Inc will be among them.

Just 38 percent of S&P 500 companies beat expectations on revenue in the past week, compared with 41 percent since the start of the reporting period, and well below the 62 percent long-term average, Thomson Reuters data showed.

On the earnings side, the data has been slightly more upbeat: 62 percent of companies that reported this week beat expectations versus 60.3 percent since the start of the earnings period, and the 62 percent long-term average, the data showed.

Investors have sold off shares after weak results, and more profit taking may be in store for stocks, given the big gains they've seen since the start of the year, Peruzzi said.

    Worst day in four months
Friday's sell-off gave Wall Street its worst day in four months. The market's decline came on the 25th anniversary of Black Monday, when the Dow Jones industrial average plunged 22.6 percent in its worst one-day percentage loss ever.

The S&P 500 ended the week up just 0.3 percent. That's a modest showing when compared with its gain of 2.3 percent in the first three days alone.

For the year, the benchmark S&P 500 Index is still up 14 percent.

Much is riding on Apple, especially given the weakness in technology earnings so far this reporting period. Besides IBM and Microsoft, Intel and Google disappointed Wall Street with their results this week as well. Google's big miss came as a shock to many investors.

Apple "is certainly a bellwether, and today more than any other stock, sets the mood for investors," said Lawrence Creatura, portfolio manager at Federated Investors in Rochester, New York.

Besides Apple, results are expected next week from Caterpillar , Yahoo , United Parcel Service and Whirlpool.

CEO's rosy spin on earnings downplays weak results?

Based on results from 116 companies and estimates for the rest, earnings for S&P 500 companies are expected to decline 1.8 percent from a year ago - the first such decline in three years. Without Apple, that decline would be about 2.3 percent, according to Thomson Reuters earnings analyst Greg Harrison.

Outlooks from U.S. companies have added to worries.

So far for the fourth quarter, there have been 17 negative outlooks from companies, no positive outlooks and one in line. That compares with 11 negative outlooks, two positive outlooks and two in line at a comparable period for third quarter guidance, Thomson Reuters data showed.

"Now is when the truth is revealed," Creatura said. "Now is when management teams begin to bracket what 2013 results might look like."

Taking some of the focus away from earnings next week will be the Federal Reserve's policy meeting on Tuesday and Wednesday. After last month's meeting, the Fed announced its third round of aggressive economic stimulus, causing stocks to rally despite a slew of earnings warnings.

While investors welcomed the Fed's plan for more economic stimulus, known as quantitative easing, the move underscored worries that the U.S. economy may be in worse shape than feared.

Worsening macroeconomic conditions, namely sluggishness in the U.S. economy along with a dramatic slowdown in Europe and weakness in China, have been among the chief reasons cited by companies in their warnings about earnings and revenue.

U.S. economic indicators to watch next week will include new home sales for September on Wednesday and durable goods orders for September on Thursday, followed by the first look at third-quarter GDP on Friday, as well as the final reading for October on consumer sentiment from the Thomson Reuters/University of Michigan surveys.

KANSAS CITY, Kan. ? The fast, smooth new surface at Kansas Speedway had the potential to wreak havoc on the Chase for the Sprint Cup championship.

The recent repave cluttered Sunday's race with a record 14 cautions ? a season high in the Sprint Cup Series ? and contributed to issues that affected at least four title contenders. But the standings looked much the same when Matt Kenseth took the checkered flag in a battered Ford that he banged hard into the wall midway through the race.

Kenseth still managed to drive it to his second victory in three races, while Brad Keselowski dodged accident after accident to hang onto his seven-point lead over Jimmie Johnson in the standings with four races remaining in the Chase.

"I was thinking, 'Man, this has to be entertaining for everybody to watch,' " Kenseth said. "There was a lot of wild stuff happening."

That was an understatement Sunday, when the longest green-flag run was 35 laps early in the race. Some of the cautions were caused by tire problems, others were for single-car spins, including Chase drivers Johnson, Tony Stewart and Greg Biffle.

And, Danica Patrick wrecked herself when she intentionally wrecked Landon Cassill.

"You know, everybody has been asking all season long where the cautions have been," Keselowski said. "Well, they flew to Kansas and they've been hanging out here because there was caution after caution."

Biffle's spin ended his day with a hard crash into the wall.

"I lost it, man. It got away from me off of four and we wrecked it," said Biffle, who dropped five spots in the standings to 11th. "I had no indication, no little wiggle, no sideways. It just got away from me and it killed our day."

Johnson, who led 44 laps early, was far luckier.

He had pitted from the lead and was back in traffic when a caution came out, and he spun by himself shortly after the restart. He, too, hit the wall on his spin, but crew chief Chad Knaus called him to pit road to get a look at the car instead of conceding laps by going to the garage for repairs.

Knaus then methodically dictated team orders, as Johnson stopped on pit road at least a half-dozen times for repairs over two caution periods.

"That looks good, man. They did a much better job than I thought they would," he told Johnson as he drove away. "There's really nothing wrong with that thing."

Even Keselowski was surprised to see the heavily taped No. 48 back on the track when the race went green.

"I thought you said the 48 car wrecked?" he asked his crew. "He looks fine."

Team owner Rick Hendrick praised the team efforts during a stop in the media center during the race.

"I have never in my 30 years of racing seen anyone perform that kind of surgery and not lose a lap," Hendrick said.

In the end, Johnson salvaged a ninth-place finish and was carefully inspecting his Chevrolet after the race.

"I'm just now getting a chance to look at the damage on the car and it's pretty severe," he said. "I'm impressed that they fixed it as they did. All things considered, without my mistake, I think we had a shot to win."

It was still good enough to keep the Chase margin unchanged with Keselowski, who finished a spot ahead in eighth. He came into the race with a seven-point lead and left with a seven-point lead as the series heads next weekend to Martinsville Speedway.

"I'm glad to have survived the carnage and brought back a decent car," Keselowski said. "Whew! Just a tough day."

Martin Truex Jr. finished second, Paul Menard was third in the first race back for crew chief Slugger Labbe, who served a six-race suspension for an infraction at Michigan.

Kasey Kahne finished fourth and was followed by defending champion Stewart, who overcame both a spin during the race and a pit road penalty for leaving his stall with equipment still attached to his car.

"An eventful day," Stewart said. "Our guys led by (crew chief) Steve Addington, they never gave up. That's how we won a championship last year, by never giving up. We've got a little bit of work to do, but we're gaining on it."

Clint Bowyer, from nearby Emporia and the winner last week at Charlotte, finished sixth to maintain fourth in the Chase standings. He trimmed his deficit by three points to 25 behind Keselowski.

"We've just got to keep digging," Bowyer said. "You've got to keep gaining on them. I was hoping to gain a little bit more than that, but we had a solid day."

Regan Smith, in his second race filling in for Dale Earnhardt Jr., was seventh. Earnhardt will test on Monday and see his doctor on Tuesday with every indication he'll be cleared to return to the No. 88 Chevrolet next week at Martinsville after sitting out two races because of two concussions in a six-week span.

Keselowski, Johnson and Jeff Gordon rounded out the top 10. Denny Hamlin was 13th to remain third in the standings, but he lost five points and now is down 20 to Keselowski.

"This is a race where when you've got the other guys you're racing finishing eighth and ninth, you've got to beat them, especially wrecked race cars," Hamlin said. "We just shot ourselves in the foot a lot today."

For Kenseth, it was his second win in three weeks, but not enough to put him back in the title picture. Although he gained two spots in the standings, he's still ninth in the Chase and 55 points out.

Still, as he heads into his final month with Roush Fenway Racing, he's appreciative of these final moments. Kenseth is leaving the team at the end of the season to drive for Joe Gibbs Racing.

"I'm really, really thankful and humble to be sitting up here, honestly," he said after the race. "It's just a pleasure to drive that stuff. We still have some races left we want to win."

The pros and cons of having a relationship at university ? Spark ...

    By Shelley McGrath
    @Shelley1105

When asked to write this article I thought it could go either two ways; it could turn into a soppy ?diary-entry style? moan at men or come across as extremely needy and have you wanting me to get a grip. I accepted the challenge as I have knowledge on this subject matter; it?s fair to say not all successful experiences, but experiences none-the-less.

There are cons of being in a relationship in general, but coming to uni does add that extra strain and pressure. I think when it comes to leaving your other half at home, paranoia is probably the main issue that causes arguments. Having done the long distance thing with a past-boyfriend when he went to uni I know of this strain. Things were pretty laid back, but there are those girls (not me I?d like to point out) who will constantly stalk their partner?s social network pages for dodgy photos from the night before. It was just unfortunate timing that in my case it just popped up on my news feed when I got in from college. Of course, there are those getting into relationships at uni, which kind of rules out the paranoia thing. A con I think in this situation is if you?re in the same friendship group, especially if you all live in the same halls. It can be great when you all get along, but not so great when there?s an argument; relationships within friendship groups can cause a divide!

Now that the bad stuff is out of the way, I can now move onto the things that aren?t so depressing, after all relationships aren?t all doom and gloom, if you pick a good?un of course. Nine times out of ten if you?re doing the long distance thing, you get a rather nice supply of flowers, chocolates, cards etc. Also when you meet up it?s that bit more special, after all living in each other?s pockets is extremely unhealthy. Obviously, this can be hard to avoid if you both are at uni together, so my advice would be to make time for your friends as well as each other, then all should be fine.

Not one of my friends at uni is with the same person they were with at the start of first year, but that?s not to say they don?t work. No relationship is plain sailing; they?re something you need to work at and they can be tough sometimes. University is a place that changes your life and is ever changing. So much can happen in the space of three years, you?ll wonder where the time went. The strongest of relationships can fall through at any time; all you can do is try and make it work, and if it?s meant to be, it will happen.

Reading At A University Level - By Andrew Sullivan - The Daily Beast

    Riseacademicnovel

Jeffrey J. Williams charts the rise of the academic novel in American fiction:

My thesis is that the academic novel stems from the rise of mass higher education in the United States.?It follows the demographics; the fact that two thirds of Americans go to college provides an audience. College is no longer a cloister but as common as the shopping mall. ... Professors were rare in the U.S. in 1900 ? only about 1 in 3,167 people was faculty. Medical doctors and lawyers were much more common ? about 1 in 600. However, by 2000 professors came to constitute 1 of 243, so they were a familiar professional to most American people ? especially to those who read literature, who in all likelihood went to college.

(Chart from Williams, who distinguishes the academic novel, focusing on faculty, from the campus novel, focusing on students.)

BEIRUT (Reuters) - The Beirut car bomb that killed a top Lebanese security official will probably prove to be the most destabilizing attack in Lebanon since the 2005 assassination of former prime minister Rafik al-Hariri.

What is less clear - and this is something that instills fear in a society still scarred by its 1975-90 civil war - is whether the attack was a reprisal or the start of a campaign of violence by Damascus and its allies, suspected by many Lebanese of trying to spread Syria's conflict across its borders.

Lebanon, which has yet to fully overcome its own wartime sectarian divisions, is too fragile to withstand being enveloped by a Syrian conflict that is beginning to mirror Lebanon's own slide into fratricidal bloodletting.

Wissam al-Hassan, the security official who died with seven others on Friday, was buried with full honors in an emotional state funeral on Sunday at the Rafik al-Hariri mosque, the heart of the former premier's reconstruction legacy in central Beirut.

The funeral turned into a political rally against Syria and its local allies in Lebanon.

Hassan is thought to have been targeted because in August, after a carefully planned sting operation, his Internal Security Forces intelligence unit arrested a former Lebanese cabinet minister close to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

The minister, Michel Samaha, is charged with transporting Syrian-assembled bombs to launch attacks on sectarian targets in Lebanon. Two Syrian officers, including General Ali Mamlouk, were indicted with Samaha in a humiliating blow to Assad and an unprecedented move against Lebanon's dominant neighbor.

    EVIDENCE UNCOVERED

Hassan also led the investigation into Hariri's murder and uncovered evidence that implicated Syria and Hezbollah, although both deny the charge. An international tribunal accused several Hezbollah members of involvement in the murder.

"There is a probability that this will be the start of a new period in which we will see more assassinations, bombings and other problems," said Sarkis Naoum, a columnist and Syria expert.

"Sectarian incitement is on the rise in the country and the killing of Wissam al-Hassan brought things to a head. We may be entering a very dangerous cycle. Anything might happen."

"It is not possible for the Syria conflict not to have implications on Lebanon. The Lebanese have entered the Syria war - one side is with the Assad regime and another is against it. They are fighting each other by proxy," Naoum said.

Tiny Lebanon, with its combustible sectarian mix, is being dragged into the Syria crisis with its rival Shi'ite and Sunni Muslims fighting on opposite sides.

Lebanon's Shi'ite Hezbollah group backs Assad, a member of the Shi'ite-based Alawite sect, in his fight against the Sunni-led insurgency. Lebanon's Sunnis and allied Sunni powers, notably Saudi Arabia and Turkey, support the Sunni rebels.

The killing of thousands of Sunnis in Syria has angered Sunnis in Lebanon and across the region.

Hassan's attacker did more than just kill Lebanon's most powerful intelligence brain, who collected data on all major players and uncovered several plots in recent years. The killer performed a public execution that sent a warning to all those who dared challenge Syria in Lebanon.

    INNER CIRCLE

Some analysts said the devastating attack against Hassan's anti-Syria investigative establishment bore important similarities to the blast that targeted Assad's inner circle of security officials in Damascus in July.

"Whoever did this attack wanted to deliver a message that they can reach anybody, that they can hit the highest level of intelligence," said Beirut-based commentator Rami Khouri.

"Whoever did it wanted to say 'we can still strike'."

Opposition politicians and ordinary people at Martyrs' Square saw Syria's hand in the bombing.

"Wissam al-Hassan has one enemy - Bashar al-Assad," said Beirut MP Nouhad Mashnouq, a leading member of the March 14 opposition bloc led by Saad al-Hariri, son of the slain ex-premier.

Mashnouq said the cases Hassan had brought against Samaha and Mamlouk were actions against Syria unprecedented in the history of Lebanon.

Despite the accusations from Lebanese politicians, both the Assad government and Hezbollah condemned the bombing.

The immediate destabilizing effect of Friday's blast can already be seen on the streets. Angry mourners tried to storm Prime Minister Najib Mikati's offices in central Beirut after the funeral, breaking through a security barrier and scuffling with police who fired in the air in response.

"Mikati leave, get out," chanted hundreds of protesters. They also chanted slogans against Assad, whom they accused of being behind the killing of Hassan.

The protesters blame Mikati's pro-Syrian and pro-Iranian-dominated coalition government for failing to provide security or respond effectively to the killing.

    UNREST SPREADING

Displeasure with Mikati came as spreading unrest raised fears among Lebanese that their country could slide back into the sectarian strife that haunted them for decades.

Mikati, a Sunni Muslim whom many see as unwilling to confront Hezbollah, said he had offered to step down, but that President Michel Suleiman asked him "to stay on to avoid letting Lebanon slide into turmoil".

Syria's civil war is already being played out on the streets of Tripoli in northern Lebanon, where fighting has erupted between Sunni fighters and Alawites.

The Syrian unrest has often spilled into Lebanese border villages with Assad's forces shelling them, saying they were being used by rebels to smuggle in fighters and arms.

Officials close to Hassan, who had been under threat since he pushed for Samaha's arrest, said he was using more than one safe house and that only two close associates, including the one who died with him, knew about his movements.

They suspect that Hassan's movements were followed after his return on Thursday night from a trip abroad.

"There is a contentious history between Wissam al-Hassan and Syria, Iran and their Lebanese allies (Hezbollah)," said one security source, who declined to give his name. "All the espionage and intelligence services of the world are present in Lebanon and they pay huge sums of money for information and there are many Lebanese guns for hire."

    "TERRIBLE BUT NOT UNEXPECTED"

Khouri, a Middle East affairs specialist, said the Hassan assassination was a logical extension of what has been happening in Syria over the past 19 months.

"There has been a steady increase in violence and now we are going to the next step of assassinations, bombings and maybe clashes. It is terrible but it is not unexpected," he said.

Hassan was killed because he was leading the investigation that led to the prosecution of some important figures, he said.

"It certainly reminds people of a string of assassinations that followed Hariri's killing," Khouri said.

Some analysts said the perpetrators of the bombing - which also wounded more than 80 - clearly aimed to push Lebanon into a new round of violence. But although sectarian tensions are high, Lebanese factions have no desire to return to civil war.

Despite persistent calls by Hariri and others for Mikati to resign, many politicians and Western envoys sought compromise, arguing that high-level resignations and political turmoil in Lebanon were precisely what Hassan's killers intended.

Lebanon's sectarian-based politics are further complicated by regional hostility. While the main Lebanese opposition has long been aligned with Washington and Saudi Arabia, Mikati's governing coalition is endorsed by Iran and Syria.

The bombing also heightened fears among Western powers - which have criticized Assad and called on him to step down - that the Syria war could ignite conflict across the region.

Augustus Richard Norton, a Middle East specialist at Boston University, said it was too early to say who carried out the bombing.

"However, there is no doubt that al Hassan's death will bring smiles to the face of Bashar al-Assad and his cohorts," he wrote in a commentary.

Hassan, a Sunni who opposed Syria and Hezbollah, was laid to rest next to Rafik al-Hariri, whose assassination in a similar manner seven years ago sparked widespread protests that ultimately forced Syria to withdraw its troops from Lebanon after 20 years of military and political dominance.

But despite the military pull-out, Assad retained influence through his Lebanese allies in Hezbollah.

Patch 5.1 introduces a bounty of new hunter pets

Pet-obsessed hunters are in for a real treat in patch 5.1. The Petopia forums have discovered over 100 new named beasts on the patch 5.1 PTR that have been added to the various Azerothian continents. Outland has yet to receive any new beast love.

Most of these new beasts share skins and models with other previously available pets, but among them are a few new (or previously unavailable) skins. Perhaps most exciting is the addition of a few arcane wyrms to the hunter pet lineup, a pet type hunters have been completely unable to tame previously due to their status as dragonkin, but are now beasts that fall under the Serpent designation.

Having what amounts to a minigame exclusive to your class is a rather nice perk of being a hunter. Would it even be possible to implement similar for other classes? What could you give a warrior to do that is unique to their class?

Mists of Pandaria is here! The level cap has been raised to 90, many players have returned to Azeroth, and pet battles are taking the world by storm. Keep an eye out for all of the latest news, and check out our comprehensive guide to Mists of Pandaria for everything you'll ever need to know.

Egypt: Muslim Brotherhood party elects new leader

CAIRO (AP) ? The political party of Egypt's powerful Muslim Brotherhood elected a former speaker of parliament as its new leader Friday to replace Mohammed Morsi, who resigned from the post after winning the country's presidential election.

Saad el-Katatny, who led Egypt's Islamist-dominated parliament until it was dissolved by a court order earlier this year, garnered 581 votes to become the new chief of the Freedom and Justice Party. He beat out the party's deputy leader, Essam el-Erian, who earned 283 votes.

The result essentially ensures the Brotherhood's continued tight oversight of the party, which it created after the popular uprising that toppled longtime leader Hosni Mubarak last year. El-Katatny is considered close to the Brotherhood's more conservative faction led by chief strategist and financier Khairat el-Shater, who was the group's first-choice presidential candidate before being disqualified on technical grounds.

El-Erian, on the other hand, was viewed as more of a reformist open to dialogue with Egypt's liberal parties and as a leader who would push for more independence for the party from the Brotherhood itself.

When it comes to the two candidates' political views, however, the differences are minimal, said former Brotherhood member Mohammed Osman.

"The Brotherhood organization no longer has two movements. It just has one wing, which is the conservative wing," said Osman, who split from the movement to become a chief strategist for ex-Brotherhood member and former presidential candidate Abdel-Moneim Abolfotoh. "The party and organization, and el-Katatny and el-Erian, are one and the same in the end."

The once-banned Brotherhood has emerged as Egypt's strongest political force following last year's anti-Mubarak revolt. The group's Freedom and Justice Party captured the most seats in parliamentary elections, and followed that up with Morsi's win in the presidential vote in June.

The party, however, has come under sharp criticism from liberals, secularists and Coptic Christians who accuse it of trying to write the new constitution with a sharply Islamic bent, while supporters of the former regime fear the Brotherhood is using its newfound power to settle old scores.

The group still has the support of millions of Egyptians, including many of the country's poor who rely on the Brotherhood's grassroots efforts and charity for assistance.

Around 10,000 protesters rallied Friday in Cairo, demanding an apology from the Brotherhood for violence last week, when supporters of the group clashed with anti-government protesters, leaving more than 100 people injured.

Protesters also called on the Brotherhood and its fellow Islamists to ensure the country's constitution represents all factions of society. The 100-member assembly tasked with writing the new charter is packed with Islamists, many of whom are Brotherhood members.

Protesters from a wide range of groups ? from activists who helped topple Mubarak to supporters of that the ousted leader's regime ? took part in Friday's march that ended in Tahrir Square, the epicenter of last year's revolt.

First oil nears for Kazakhstan's supergiant field

KASHAGAN OILFIELD, Kazakhstan (AP) ? The manmade islands that are home to Kazakhstan's mammoth Kashagan oilfield project rise like a mirage to the boats churning through the shallow waters of the Caspian Sea.

Creating them has been a gargantuan feat but the real test is yet to come, as uncertainty persists on when the first oil will actually be drawn, although that's expected sometime next year.

When surveyors confirmed in 2000 that Kazakhstan had a new supergiant oil reserve, the world's energy companies reacted with glee. It was the type of find that had no longer seemed possible. Nothing that big had been seen in four decades.

Kazakhstan's President Nursultan Nazarbayev branded the Kashagan field, which some believe holds up to 13 billion barrels of recoverable oil, as the great hope for the future of his fledgling Central Asian nation.

Yet developing a remote offshore site half the size of Delaware that is blighted by weather ranging from blazing to glacial has proven difficult. The northern section of the landlocked Caspian Sea is extremely shallow compared to most offshore energy projects. That makes transporting heavy equipment a problem, as deep-hulled vessels can't be used. The area's fragile ecosystem is also the site of spawning grounds for endangered sturgeon, birthing habitat for the rare Caspian seal and migratory sites for numerous birds.

Delays in the Kashagan project have also strained relations between the oil companies developing it ? from Italy, France, Holland, the United States and Japan ? and the government of Kazakhstan.

Kazakhstan, a mainly Muslim nation four times the size of Texas that borders Russia and China, gained independence after the 1991 collapse of the Soviet Union. It's a thinly populated steppe nation of 16.5 million people that has grown wealthy off of several major oil projects and other substantial mineral reserves. Many locals, however, complain that the country's riches are poorly distributed.

    ON THE ISLANDS

Away from the politics, technicians on Kashagan's hub island ? two long, narrow mazes of wells and processing modules linked by a bridge to form what is known as D-Island ? exude pride in what they have achieved.

"In 2004, when we first started, the island was just a small box," said Giancarlo Ruiu, offshore project manager with Agip KCO, a subsidiary of the Italian oil giant ENI, which has led the work on Kashagan. Other companies in the consortium are Shell, ExxonMobil, Total, ConocoPhillips, Inpex and Kazakhstan's state-owned KazMunaiGaz.

The rocks and sand needed to build up D-Island and its four satellite islands were laboriously transported from the once-vibrant fishing port of Bautino, some 350 kilometers (217 miles) to the south.

But when the wind pushes the Caspian's lime-green waters south, in effect tilting the entire sea to below-navigable levels, the 18-hour summertime boat trip can become impossible, forcing workers to rely on helicopters. In the winter, ice breakers are deployed to clear paths for convoys to make the stultifying 36-hour voyage.

To protect D-Island from destructive ice drifts, a defensive ring had to be erected.

"You can occasionally get very rare conditions, where it is partially melted, and the water and semi-melted ice becomes like a lubricant. And when you get a surge of the ice, it can move very quickly," said Robert Dunkley, head of information and design at Agip KCO.

The construction team used a computerized system to carefully place tons of material, using building techniques similar to those that created Dubai's palm tree-shaped islands.

"We used to say that you are just dumping rock," Ruiu said. "(But) every single placement of rock was done with GPS control" to calculate depth and location.

In all, some 200,000 tons of concrete, enough to fill 50 Olympic swimming pools, and 600,000 truckloads of rock were used to form D-Island.

The island is now a dense forest of barges housing facilities such as gas injection equipment and emergency generators from Norway, Italy and Dubai.

In parallel with the construction, 12 wells were put down on D-Island to begin tapping into the highly pressurized reservoirs of sulfurous oil located 4,200 meters (13,780 feet) below the seabed. Another eight wells are primed to go on the smaller A-Island, while drilling is still ongoing to complete a further 20 wells on three remaining islands by the end of 2016.

In the meantime, thousands of laborers in orange suits work on the islands and sleep in floating apartment blocks during monthlong shifts. Sometime next year, the workforce on D-Island will be scaled down to 240 people and the largely automated offshore operations will be run from a high-tech control room.

    IT WAS A GAMBLE

When test crude at Kashagan was discovered in 2000, oil prices were around $30 per barrel. This made any massive investment on a problematic energy project seem potentially foolhardy, but could also keep costs down.

The price of oil more than tripled over the decade, however, which sent outlays for energy-intensive construction labor, equipment and materials soaring as well.

More than $30 billion has been spent so far on the Kashagan project, way more than its original $10 billion estimate. The final bill for the Phase 1 development stage could even gallop past $45 billion. That figure will swell more with Phase 2 drilling at other patches of the field.

"It's not going to be profitable for the companies until you get into Phase 2," said Andrew Neff, Moscow-based senior analyst with IHS Energy. "Phase 2 is supposed to be by 2018-2019 and there hasn't been any progress in the last two years as far as I'm aware."

Kazakhstan has been irritated by the frequent postponement of the first oil, which over-optimistic planners had once said would start by 2005.

Kashagan operates under a production-sharing agreement where international companies pay for the exploration and development costs. Returns are shared between investors and the government on a sliding scale.

Now that Kazakhstan is growing increasingly rich on oil from other fields, it negotiates from a position of strength and has sought to adapt the deal to more favorable terms. The government is eager to begin receiving oil royalty payments and the state-owned KazMunaiGaz is due a share in the profits as a 16.85 percent owner.

"Everybody has been looking at Kashagan as this great cash cow coming down the road soon," Neff said.

While a KazMunaiGaz chief executive predicted a few years ago that Caspian oil would boost the country's annual oil production up to 180 million tons ? equivalent to 1.3 billion barrels ? by 2015, officials now have tamped that down to 90 million tons.

To reach that target, Kashagan will need to deliver 370,000 barrels of oil a day.

The production-sharing agreement expires in 2041 ? a date that is distressingly near to consortium members, considering the size of their investments. On the bright side for the companies, oil was selling for around $92 a barrel this week.

"We know the life of this field is much longer than 2041," said Alain Guenot, planning director of North Caspian Operating Co., the joint venture that manages Kashagan. "Everybody would like to extend the (deal)."

While Kazakh officials and oil executives are eager to start pumping, workers on the ground are more sanguine.

"Without production, we don't have revenue, they don't have revenue, and they'd like to have revenue as soon as possible," Guenot said. "(But) we're not going to start this plant if we're not sure that it's properly finished."

A WORK AT HOME MUM?MINUS THE KIDS - The Modern ...

Posted by MWSG Admin on Thursday, October 18, 2012 ? Leave a Comment?

Looking into my crystal ball I can see the future I want to have.

I want a nice home and a happy, healthy family and the luxury to be able to contribute to our lifestyle while working at home and raising our children.

When these topics come up in general conversation, I usually get the standard nod from all my friends whom themselves, would also love to be working from home in some way when children come along.

But when I dare to say that I would like this to be my lifestyle now, without the 2.5 children in tow I am usually greeted with a stampede of ?Why now? You?re still able to go to work!? and ?But you don?t have any kids!?

The truth of the matter is I love being at home. I am truly the person I want to be when I am there. It?s inviting, there?s never anyone drinking the last pot of coffee and, what?s more, track pants and messy buns are ok for the Monday morning meeting at home.

After a few long-haul travel adventures, and actually realising that I can make the world as small or as large as I want it to be, the answer is clear. I can finally see the trees through all the forest.

The internet and social media are increasingly making the lattes in Manhattan and the brunches in Dubai easier to experience. And, let?s face it, no one is forking out $1500 to fly to New York just for a coffee.

But with the click of a button and a swoosh of a mouse I am simply transported to a world where as long as I have my wits about me and comfy pants on, I can be earning the same, if not more, from the comfort of my home, with re-runs of Friends playing in the background. It may not start out as the money spinner all those pop up ads promise, and the Carrie Bradshaw life of typing articles and looking at the topless muscular men in Central Park running around definitely won?t be happening in the small town in NSW where I am from.

But who?s to say I need kids for it to be acceptable to work at home? I have a fairly reliant dog that I treat like a child, and I don?t feel the need anymore to defend my desire to be a successful businesswoman of the world, from my living room.

Imagine it. You wake up in the morning, help the hubby get ready for work, send him on his way, and then you can really start the day.

I would like to begin with some air guitar while doing some light cleaning, with a vocal solo to bring crowds to their knees. Followed by a quick workout and some yoga to freshen the mind and body, then hopping into the shower where yet another vocal solo rings through the acoustics of the bathroom.

Dressed in my finest sweats and a hoodie loungewear, I skip, hop and swagger to the laptop/IPad/tablet/desktop/smartphone for some work. I can do an hour of data entry than an hour on my blog and an hour freelance writing.

Follow that with a home cooked lunch, coffee and Tim Tam slammer while watching Ellen, and the afternoon reserved for research for the next day?s musings.

Dinner on the table by 7, washing up done and, as I?ve been home all day, a programme viewing schedule set up ready to go.

And, all the while, I was in my slippers and I gave myself a facial.? I?m selling a lifestyle here aren?t I?

Now I?m sure there will be days when the sunshine calls me and I lounge in the garden reading Fifty Shades of Grey, but I?m only human.? The option of working from home is a lucrative one, mostly offered to WAHMs {work at home mums}.

I, however, am looking at setting myself up for this lifestyle before the whirlwind of sleepless nights, sore nipples and milk stained everything beset our quiet abode.

It?s no different to an athlete preparing for the Olympics. The prep work starts well in advance with training, an eating program, coaches and mentors, all offering support for the one race that can last anywhere from 11 seconds to 2 hours, depending on your preferred discipline (personally, I see myself as an equestrian rider).

I?d like to think of starting to work at home now, pre-children, as prep for the big games. To be the best mother, wife and equal to my family, why can?t I start now?

Society has placed a big old ?W? on me for worker, and that?s fine, but a job is not the four walls of an office building; the mediocre conversation by the coffee maker or the tedious emails about the pot luck coming up and what the weird lady in accounting is making {mostly cheese based}.

I want a career. I want freedom to change my role every hour if I choose.

I want to be a work at home M.U.M. Motivated Unique Mandy.

I?m not expecting to change the whole world, just mine, and to be wearing my pink leopard slippers while I do so.

    GUEST POST CONTRIBUTOR

My name is Amanda Edwards and I would like to describe myself using three adjectives:

Passionate; about so many things it?s hard to keep a track of them myself.

Fun; so fun in fact I have scars on my body from maybe a little too much fun.

Honest; proverbial what you see is what you get.

I love my friends, family and all things pink. Life?s just cuter with a bit of pink. I would call myself a bit of a hoarder with a minor addiction to antiques, second hand stores and vintage items. Entertaining is the name of the game at our house and I will usually bellow ?I?m the hostess with the mostest? after a few wines; but cooking, feeding and spending time around a dinner table are truly magical with witty conversation and good company. I am looking for the golden chalice of having it all and looking fabulous while doing so. Let me know if you find it. I?ve Googled it, it offered a few suggestions.
