Joe Benavidez and Demian Maia take UFC 156 decisions

Demian Maia and Joe Benavidez started UFC 156's main card with decision wins on Saturday night.

In the battle of the wrestler vs. the grappler, grappling whiz Demian Maia easily won over wrestler Jon Fitch.

Fitch, who wrestled collegiately at Purdue, could not stop Maia's takedowns. Throughout all three rounds, Maia took Fitch's back, and controlled him from there throughout. The one saving grace for Fitch was that he could stop Maia's submissions, but Fitch offered no offense. The judges saw it 30-27 on every card for Maia.

Maia has found welterweight to be a much more welcoming weight class. He has three wins there, over Fitch, Rick Story and Dong Hyun Kim. Fitch, on the other hand, has hit a rough patch. He is 1-2-1 in his last four fights.

Joe Benavidez won over Ian McCall to start off the main card. Benavidez had the better of McCall early on, wobbling him early in the first round, but McCall's grappling kept Benavidez at bay in the second round. Benavidez stopped McCall's takedown attempts and wobbled him early in the third round. The judges saw it 29-28 across the board for Benavidez.

Both fighters lost their last bouts to the flyweight champ, Demetrious Johnson. Getting the win at UFC 156 was key for each fighter to get another shot at the belt. Benavidez's win puts him to 17-3, with his last two losses coming in title fights.

Ten basic Android terminal commands you should know

command line

For a lot of us, the fact that we can plug our Android phone or tablet into our computer and interact with it is a big plus. Besides the times when we've broken something and need to fix it, there are plenty of reasons why an advanced Android user would want to talk to his or her device. To do that, you need to have a few tools and know a few commands. That's what we're going to talk about today. Granted, this won't be the end-all be-all discussion of adb commands, but there are 10 basic commands everyone should know if they plan to get down and dirty with the command line.

The tools are easy. If you're a Mac or Linux user, you'll want to install the SDK as explained at the Android developers site. It's not hard, and you don't have the whole driver mess that Windows users do. Follow the directions and get things set up while I talk to the Windows using folks for a minute.

If you're using Windows, things are easier and harder at the same time. The tools themselves are the easy part. Download this file. Open the zip file and you'll see a folder named android-tools. Drag that folder somewhere easy to get to. Next, visit the manufacturers page for your device and install the adb and fastboot drivers for Windows. You'll need this so that your computer can talk to your Android device. If you hit a snag, visit the forums and somebody is bound to be able to help you through it.

Now that we're all on the same page, enable USB debugging on your device (see your devices manual if you need help finding it, and remember it was hidden in Android 4.2), and plug it in to your computer. Now skip past the break and let's begin!

Egypt 'bodyguards' take stand against sex assault

CAIRO (AP) ? With bright neon vests and hardhats gleaming at dusk, a dozen Egyptian volunteers fanned out through Cairo's crowded Tahrir Square. Their project: end a surge in sexual assaults on women that activists say has become the darkest stain on the country's opposition street movement.

Patrolling on Friday, the men and women have joined Tahrir Bodyguard ? one of several informal groups that have arisen to protect female demonstrators after women were stripped, groped and assaulted in a string of attacks this past year. Over the past week alone, while mass protests filled city squares around the country, over two dozen new sexual attacks have been reported ? a wave activists call the worst in years.

Soraya Bahgat said she founded the group using online social media after seeing television footage last November of a mob of men attacking a woman and tearing off her clothes. She had been on the way to a demonstration at Tahrir herself, but instead stayed in, gripped with fear.

"It was sickening. They were dragging her through the street," said the 29-year-old, who works as a human resources manager. "I couldn't imagine something so horrific, and something that fundamentally would keep women from exercising their right to assembly like anyone else. No one should be prevented from demonstrating."

Such is the concern that the United Nations on Thursday demanded authorities to act to bring perpetrators to justice, saying it had reports of 25 sexual assaults on women in Tahrir rallies over the past week. Another Egyptian organization that also patrols the square, Operation Anti-Sexual Harassment/Assault, reported 19 incidents on one day alone. It was January 25th ? the second anniversary of the start of the uprising that toppled autocrat Hosni Mubarak.

Extraordinary violence has been used in some of the attacks. Human rights campaigner Amnesty International says that some meet the definition of rape, including penetration with fingers and sharp objects. Frequently, fights with knives and blunt weapons break out when people try to stop the attacks, blurring the lines between those helping and the perpetrators.

"Testimonies from victims and those attempting to save them paint a frightening picture: tens if not hundreds of men surrounding the victims with countless hands tearing-off clothes and veils, unzipping trousers and groping breasts, nipples and backsides," Amnesty's Egypt researcher Diana Eltahawy wrote in a blog post on Friday.

The activists say they can expect little help from the police, who rarely intervene in such cases and who they accuse of failing to properly investigate allegations. Uniforms are almost never seen at Tahrir during demonstrations except at the fringes, where riot police regularly clash with rock-throwing youths.

Sexual harassment in Egypt is not a new phenomenon. Women on the streets frequently are subjected to everything from stares to cat-calls and attempts to grab them. In previous years, there were instances of young men ganging up to grope girls in parks or on main boulevards during public holidays when large crowds are on the street.

The trend however has worsened since the 2011 uprising, which saw a general collapse in security and rise in crime after the fall of Mubarak. This past June, as women marched through Tahrir demanding an end to harassment, a crowd assaulted them, overwhelming their male guardians and molesting several of the female marchers. And in October during Eid al-Adha, Islam's biggest holiday, activists trying to protect women were harassed themselves, as hordes of all-male onlookers shouted taunts and blew air horns at them.

Experts, activists and media have attributed the harassment to a wide range of possible factors. Some blame widespread unemployment or underemployment among youth. Others cite an attitude in the conservative nation that women should not be out in public and thus those who are fair game. Activists have speculated that some attacks are planned, aiming to discredit the protesters or to dissuade women from joining them.

The patrols, which aim to deter potential assailants and evacuate women under assault, have prompted a backlash from harassers.

"We've had people beaten up, and in one instance a crowd ? some of whom were carrying knives ? tried to break into one of our locations," said Hussein ElShafei of Operation Anti-Sexual Harassment/Assault. "Threats are a regular occurrence."

In Tahrir on Friday, the neon-vested team said they had only had to make three interventions during the day's protest, which they attributed to their high visibility and a smaller turnout in the square than usual. With other groups present, including the one ElShafei works for, dozens of volunteers could be seen in the crowds. Violence that night was concentrated on the other side of the city, where thousands of protesters denouncing the president marched on his palace and clashed with security forces firing tear gas and water cannons.

It was the eighth day of the country's latest wave of political violence. Around 60 people have been killed in protests, rioting and clashes over the past week, the worst period of crisis since the fall of Mubarak. Observers say the protests are taking a dangerous turn as rival groups supporting and opposing Morsi's Islamist backers have taken matters into their own hands.

"I think people are getting more violent. It's been two years now and they are battle hardened," said Mohammed Osama, a 35-year-old computer engineer and black belt in judo who said he joined the bodyguard group after being slashed with a knife in street violence in his hometown of Alexandria. He said that after experiencing violence himself, he wanted to do something to prevent it from striking others.

"Individual efforts aren't enough ? organization is needed. And it's the honorable thing to do," he said in measured tones, a scar visible under his eye.

As for the perpetrators of the attacks, he described them as a "social disease."

"Sometimes attacks are organized, other times it's people profiting from chaos on the streets, said Osama. "Ignorance and poverty is part of the problem, but for those who seek to victimize others, they now have another thing coming."

After Harvard visit, dozens injured in bus crash

BOSTON (AP) ? After a visit to Harvard University, dozens in a group of high school students and their adult chaperones were injured when their charter bus hit a bridge after police say the driver failed to heed low-clearance warning signs.

One person was hospitalized with life-threatening injuries and three with serious injuries, the Boston Emergency Medical Services said. Thirty-four people were injured in all, EMS said.

The Calvary Coach bus was carrying 42 people and was heading back to the Philadelphia area when it struck an overpass on Soldier's Field Road in Boston, a major crosstown road, at around 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Massachusetts State Police said. Some passengers were trapped for more than an hour as rescue crews worked to free them.

Authorities said the bus did not belong on the road, where a 10-foot height limit is in place and over-sized vehicles are not authorized. State Police said the driver, whose name was not released, "failed to heed signs" warning of the height limit and will likely be cited for an over-height violation. The investigation will determine if he faces more serious charges, state police said. The driver was not injured.

Ray Talmedge, owner of the Philadelphia-based Calvary Coach Bus company, said Saturday night that his driver was being interviewed by police. Talmedge, who said he didn't know anything about the road restrictions, said the driver also drives a school bus.

The students were part of a Destined for a Dream Foundation group, Talmedge said. Officials with the Bristol, Pa.-based group, a nonprofit that helps underprivileged youth, refused to comment on the crash when reached by phone.

The group's Facebook page said the trip to Harvard was to "visit the campus, sit with the office of cultural advancement, followed by a tour of the campus ... followed by Harvard Square (shopping, eating, site seeing...etc...) This should be a fun time for all!"

None of those injured was identified, and state police said they did not know how many of the injured were adults and how many were juveniles.

The bus suffered significant damage in the crash. The front part of the roof was pushed in while the center section bowed downward. Photos posted on the Fire Department's website showed firefighters standing on the top of the bus using boards to extract people. The last victim was freed from the bus around 9 p.m., according to the department.

The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority sent buses to pick up other passengers and get them out of the frigid temperatures.

Soldiers Field Road curves along the Charles River and passes by Harvard and Boston University. It is a major roadway to the Massachusetts Turnpike. Soldiers Field remained closed while crews tried to remove the bus.

SynergY celebrates UAE National Environment Week 2013 by ...

Making the best use of their day-off from schools, by planting trees and taking a tour of TADWEER facility; getting a better insight into waste management and pledging to contribute their best by advocating that everyone must adopt an Eco-lifestyle.

Under the patronage of HH Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE, every year the country marks the National Environment Day on February 4 to highlight and galvanize public action and awareness about one of the key environmental issues in the UAE.

The National Environment Day supports the spirit of individual and collective initiatives and responsibility among all segments of the society on environmental issues.

Dubai is a leading city that is committed to raise the environmental quality standards by generating initiatives and best practices across the region. Towards this direction, Tadweer is the first company in the region to pioneer in waste management solution applications for producing alternative fuel and green products and also to support environment leadership.

Simran Vedvyas, the founder of SynergY and UAE's youngest Torch Bearer who brought pride to the nation by carrying the London Olympic Torch 2012 reaffirmed the pledge by saying - 'We youth are the next Champions. The Challenge today is to adopt more sustainable lifestyles. Each one of us has a responsibility to live peacefully without jeopardizing the natural resources. We need to act now by convening, converging and collaborating'.

Simran is a student of The Millennium School Dubai, UAE. Simran is well known in the community today for her contribution to environment, and health initiatives. Twice the winner of Sheikh Hamdan Award and sharjah Award for Educational Excellence in 2012 and 2009-2008; Simran has shouldered a big responsibility of this noble cause which will inspire and motivate many students to gain a more sustainable society.

Present during the event Mr. Haitham Shaqwara, General Manager from Tadweer motivated the group by emphasizing 'the importance of reducing, reusing and recycling of waste. We are also thankful to Eng. Abdul Majeed Saifaie, Director- Waste Management Department for his kind support and guidance for this global environment & waste management cause'.

On the one hand Aishwarya Shetty a student from Our Own English High School Sharjah considered that-'Planting and caring for seedling trees helps young people to learn about the natural world and the value of trees in it' and on the other Ananya Jain who studies at Dubai International Academy promised to take back the days' learning to use in her project work and share it with her friends too.

Zaid Haddadin, who studies at the Repton School , Dubai and aspires to be a Software Engineer felt content planting the tree and understanding the importance of reducing waste too. Sayedda Zahra, studies in Indian High School and has participated in Dubai Earth Hour, Recycling events and walks regularly. Unmesh Datta, a member and student from DPS Sharjah cited the reason of his presence- 'As a fervent environmentalist, I always try to do whatever is possible for me to save our green planet.

I feel that having first-hand information by visiting a waste recycling plant would be a great experience for us.' Touring the factory, the youngsters got an opportunity to see the process of solid waste sorting and recycling, understanding the sorting process and end products. This event is a testimony of Tadweer's mission that goes beyond the commercial purposes and aims at creating and establishing a quality environment through educational partnerships and leadership, increasing waste reduction, recycling and resource conservation.

Such innovative participation will certainly put UAE on the path of zero waste generation, and will turn solid waste from a burden to a resource and also contribute in reducing carbon foot print.

Duncan Jones to direct "Warcraft" game movie

LONDON (Reuters) - British filmmaker Duncan Jones has signed up to direct a movie based on the popular videogame World of Warcraft, according to a statement posted on its Facebook page.

The film, which industry estimates say will cost more than $100 million to make, would be a major step up for the director behind the acclaimed low-budget space drama "Moon" and sci-fi thriller "Source Code" starring Jake Gyllenhaal.

"We are pleased to announce that Duncan Jones ... has signed on with Legendary Pictures to direct the upcoming live-action film based on the Warcraft universe," the statement said.

In a post on his Twitter feed, 41-year-old Jones, who is singer David Bowie's son, added: "So the gauntlet was thrown down ages ago: Can you make a proper move of a video game. I've always said it's possible. Got to DO it now!"

The script for the film, which is due to start production in 2013 and hit theatres in 2015, is being written by Charles Leavitt, who was behind the 2006 thriller "Blood Diamond".

Warcraft is one of the world's most successful multi-player online role-play games.

U.S. holds key to improving Russia ties: Putin aide

MOSCOW (Reuters) - Strained Russian-U.S. ties will not improve unless Washington stops openly criticizing Moscow's human rights record and supporting President Vladimir Putin's foes, the top foreign policy official in the Russian parliament said.

Relations between the Cold War-era rivals took a dive after Putin's return to the Kremlin in May, undermining a 2009 initiative by President Barack Obama and Russia's then-president Dmitry Medvedev, a more liberal Putin prot?g?, to "reset" ties.

Alexei Pushkov, head of the foreign committee at the Russian parliament's lower chamber and a Putin ally, said the ties were "negatively stable" now and the "reset" could be considered over without an initiative on the highest political level to save it.

"The priority is political realism, ideology matters should be secondary. I tell you, issues over ideology and values can destroy anything," Pushkov told Reuters in an interview.

"If the United States believes that as part of bilateral relations between two countries it can be supporting the Russian opposition, this clearly does not help Russian-U.S. ties," he added, speaking next to a framed picture of him with Putin. "The U.S. should not be part of Russia's internal political process."

Pushkov was speaking before a meeting in Munich on Saturday between Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and U.S. Vice President Joe Biden who were due to discuss bilateral ties.

Washington and Moscow have recently scrapped bilateral deals after Moscow was enraged by the U.S. Magnitsky Act, named after an anti-graft lawyer who died in a Russian prison. The bill bans visas and freezes assets of Russians deemed rights violators.

"The reset was based on an agreement by both sides... that all the issues of democracy, human rights, Russia's internal developments, will be discussed in a non-public format," said Pushkov, who has also run a TV show.

"As far as I understand, this was a tacit understanding," he also said, adding outgoing Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and other Washington officials violated that.

Moscow retaliated against the Magnitsky Act with its own blacklist of U.S. officials. It also banned Americans from adopting Russian orphans and outlawed U.S.-funded NGOs that it said meddled in political activities.

"Can Putin and Obama save the reset? Yes, they can. Will they do it? I don't know. The conditions for this are negative. And the likelihood of that, I think, not high," Pushkov said.

On Wednesday, Moscow lifted a law enforcement deal with Washington. Before that it had told the aid body the U.S. Agency for International Development to leave Russia, saying it was interfering in domestic politics.

"Moscow has taken a decision to remove from relations with the U.S. those elements that we do not like. We used to accept these aspects of bilateral ties for the sake of a bigger cause, better relations," Pushkov said.

REALPOLITIK

Putin invited Obama for bilateral talks in Russia, but on Friday the former KGB spy's spokesman said nothing had been fixed yet.

Pushkov said cooperation over Afghanistan, an agreement to easing the visa regime, the remaining working groups set up under the "reset" and a treaty on nuclear arms reduction were under no threat.

But he said Moscow would respond in kind to any extension of the U.S. blacklist and that economic relations could suffer if things got worse, overshadowing the benefits both countries would likely see from Russia's WTO entry.

Washington and Moscow are also at loggerheads over the war in Syria, where more than 60,000 people have died in 22 months. But Pushkov said the two U.N.Security Council permanent members will have to come to an agreement over Syria eventually.

Moscow, a long-time arms supplier for Damascus, vetoed three U.N. resolutions to mount pressure on Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. Washington has recognized the Syrian National Coalition, an umbrella group for the opposition.

"My short-term outlook is that the conflict will go on. The opposition is gaining some strength, but not decisively. At the end of the day we will have to agree on something. The United States won't send its troops there, we won't either."

"No side ?an gain a clear victory, so we will have to find some sort of common decision," he added.
