Was GM Marketing Exec Forced Out Over ... - Business Insider

General Motors' chief global marketing officer Joel Ewanick resigned from the company Sunday after striking a questionable "European soccer-sponsorship deal," according to the Wall Street Journal.

That deal is almost certainly Chevrolet's sponsorship of Manchester United, which Business Insider opined back in June was "a waste of money."

UPDATE: By amazing coincidence, Manchester United announced today that Chevrolet will replace Aon as its shirtfront sponsor in the 2014/15 season. The GM exec quoted in the official statement is Alan Batey, North America vp/U.S. sales, NOT Ewanick, even though Ewanick was working on the deal in June.

EARLIER: It was the second controversial deal under Ewanick. The other one involved a belatedly disclosed payment to a marketing agency at which the CFO's wife worked.

Ewanick's departure comes after a tumultuous reign at the company. He won praise for trying to rationalize GM's $5 billion global ad spend by consolidating creative and media buying duties on its ad account at fewer agencies; a move he predicted would shave $2 billion in expenditures.

More controversially, he pulled $10 million in ad spending from Facebook right before its IPO and removed his brands from next year's Super Bowl. Those acts generated a lot of heat in the media, although in private ad execs frequently confess that advertising in either venue is often a waste of money.

Ewanick's exit comes with a bunch of tantalizing mysteries. Neither Ewanick nor GM explained the move in detail. The WSJ reported:

GM told Mr. Ewanick that he was being removed for failing to properly vet the financial details of a European soccer-sponsorship deal that he struck recently, according to people familiar with the matter.

The Detroit Free Press suggested he was forced out:

"I can tell you that he failed to meet the expectations the company has for its employees," said GM spokesman Greg Martin.

Ewanick tweeted (!) a non-statement:

?It has been a privilege & honor to work with the GM Team and to be a small part of Detroit?s turnaround,? Ewanick said in a post on Twitter. ?I wish everyone at GM all the best.?

It is the Man U deal, however, around which swirls the most questions.*

It is not known how much the Man U deal is worth.* The previous deal with Aon was worth ?20 million ($31.4 million) a year, so GM's is likely more than that. At the time, Ewanick appeared to have made the pact in haste. He said:

When Manchester United played against Manchester City, "that audience around the world scaled to 600 million people," Mr. Edwards said. "Compare that to the Super Bowl here in the States, which is roughly 110, 115 million, and you're talking five times that audience watching one regular-season game. It's significant."

Um, really? Six hundred million people watching the Manchester derby? It's was a great, great game this year, no doubt?it decided the English Premier League title in City's favor?but it's doubtful that many people watched the game.

A "650 million" number was reported in the New York Times at the time, without any sourcing behind it. Elsewhere in the media, reports describe an audience of 600 million, but almost all of those reports did not name a source for that audience rating.

Notably, the Times didn't say 650 million watched the game, just that it would be broadcast to 650 million homes. The Times did not specifically say how many actually tuned in?and nor did anyone else. (The Champions League final only generates 100 million or so viewers, for instance.)

Manchester United says it has 659 million followers around the globe, which is not the same as the number of viewers who watch a match.

In other words, could it be the case that Ewanick agreed to the deal thinking it would generate a much larger audience than it actually does, thus triggering his downfall?

The second possibility was the Mother New York fiasco. The agency made a series of videos for GM that few people watched, and was paid $600,000. Mother partner/COO Pernilla Ammann is the wife of CFO Dan Ammann. GM eventually disclosed to the SEC that "not all the required procedures were followed" when the $600,000 was paid.

Neither move looked good.

*Correction: This item, originally written before the new shirtfront deal was known about, previously suggested the deal might not have been for the shirtfront. The story has been updated to reflect the new announcement.

Rome?s leaning Colosseum has experts worried

Authorities are investigating whether Rome's Colosseum is in need of repair because it is slanting. TODAY.com's Dara Brown reports.

By Claudio Lavanga, NBC News

ROME ? The ancient amphitheater has lasted as an iconic landmark of Rome for more than 2,000 years. It survived the fall of the Roman Empire, countless invasions, World War II bombings and hordes of tourists, who regularly try to nip off pieces of it to take home as souvenirs.

The Colosseum, it has seemed, was just like the city of Rome: eternal.

But a careful and lengthy examination of its structural stability, carried out by Italian geologists, provided a damning verdict: the Colosseum is in fact slanting on one side by 16 inches, and might need urgent repairs before it starts leaning like the Tower of Pisa. ?

Researchers at Rome's La Sapienza University and the environmental geology institute IGAG first noticed the anomaly one year ago. They now fear there may be a crack in the base below the amphitheater.

"The slab of concrete on which the Colosseum rests, which is like a 13 meter (42 foot) thick oval doughnut, may have a fracture inside it," Giorgio Monti, from La Sapienza's construction technology department, told Italy?s daily newspaper Corriere della Sera.?

The study will continue for another year, but critics are already taking note of the unruly and busy traffic that flows by just a few feet from the Colosseum on a daily basis.

The Colosseum sits in the middle of an important artery that connects the Roman Forum to the Circus Maximus. Tourists and Romans use it heavily, and have turned it into the biggest and most glorified roundabout in the world. ?

Fabio Fumagalli, a research coordinator at La Sapienza University, said cars produce more damage than the nearby subway.

Alessandro Bianchi / Reuters

Tourists walk in front of Rome's ancient Colosseum on Monday. The ancient Colosseum of Rome, where gladiators fought for their lives, is slanting about 16 inches lower on the south side than on the north, and authorities are investigating whether it needs urgent repairs.

?Cars subject the monument to constant vibrations, and speed up its decay, while subway trains at least pass by with intervals of many minutes.?

News of the slanting monument re-ignited criticism over delays in long-planned renovation. There hasn?t been an overall refurbishing of the Colosseum in 73 years, and recent attempts by private sponsors to pay for its re-styling have been met with fierce resistance by government officials, who fought their bid as fiercely as the lions that once roamed in the arena.

Diego della Valle, the Italian designer behind the shoe brand Tod?s, offered to pay $34 million for a face-lift of the Colosseum in exchange for exclusive rights to its image for 15 years.

Despite the initial reluctance by the officials, who felt that selling off the monument to a shoemaker would make gladiators turn in their graves, the deal was finally granted for the sake of the monument. ?

Since the beginning of the year, several stones have fallen off the Colosseum, proving it is in urgent need of repair. Following many delays the restoration works were set to start on July 31, but the date has already been moved once, this time to December.

If the Colosseum has been standing there for 2,080 years, officials seem to reason, it can survive another few months.

New coating evicts biofilms for good

ScienceDaily (July 30, 2012) ? Biofilms may no longer have any solid ground upon which to stand. A team of Harvard scientists has developed a slick way to prevent the troublesome bacterial communities from ever forming on a surface. Biofilms stick to just about everything, from copper pipes to steel ship hulls to glass catheters. The slimy coatings are more than just a nuisance, resulting in decreased energy efficiency, contamination of water and food supplies, and -- especially in medical settings -- persistent infections. Even cavities in teeth are the unwelcome result of bacterial colonies.

In a study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS), lead coauthors Joanna Aizenberg, Alexander Epstein, and Tak-Sing Wong coated solid surfaces with an immobilized liquid film to trick the bacteria into thinking they had nowhere to attach and grow.

"People have tried all sorts of things to deter biofilm build-up -- textured surfaces, chemical coatings, and antibiotics, for example," says Aizenberg, Amy Smith Berylson Professor of Materials Science at the Harvard School of Engineering and Applied Sciences (SEAS) and a Core Faculty Member at the Wyss Institute for Biologically Inspired Engineering at Harvard. "In all those cases, the solutions are short-lived at best. The surface treatments wear off, become covered with dirt, or the bacteria even deposit their own coatings on top of the coating intended to prevent them. In the end, bacteria manage to settle and grow on just about any solid surface we can come up with."

Taking a completely different approach, the researchers used their recently developed technology, dubbed SLIPS (Slippery-Liquid-Infused Porous Surfaces) to effectively create a hybrid surface that is smooth and slippery due to the liquid layer that is immobilized on it.

First described in the September 22, 2011, issue of the journal Nature, the super-slippery surfaces have been shown to repel both water- and oil-based liquids and even prevent ice or frost from forming.

"By creating a liquid-infused structured surface, we deprive bacteria of the static interface they need to get a grip and grow together into biofilms," says Epstein, a recent Ph.D. graduate who worked in Aizenberg's lab at the time of the study.

"In essence, we turned a once bacteria-friendly solid surface into a liquid one. As a result, biofilms cannot cling to the material, and even if they do form, they easily 'slip' off under mild flow conditions," adds Wong, a researcher at SEAS and a Croucher Foundation Postdoctoral Fellow at the Wyss Institute.

Aizenberg and her collaborators reported that SLIPS reduced by 96-99% the formation of three of the most notorious, disease-causing biofilms -- Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Escherichia coli, and Staphylococcus aureus -- over a 7-day period.

The technology works in both a static environment and under flow, or natural conditions, making it ideally suited for coating implanted medical devices that interact with bodily fluids. The coated surfaces can also combat bacterial growth in environments with extreme pH levels, intense ultraviolet light, and high salinity.

SLIPS is also nontoxic, readily scalable, and -- most importantly -- self-cleaning, needing nothing more than gravity or a gentle flow of liquid to stay unsoiled. As previously demonstrated with a wide variety of liquids and solids, including blood, oil, and ice, everything seems to slip off surfaces treated with the technology.

To date, this may be the first successful test of a nontoxic synthetic surface that can almost completely prevent the formation of biofilms over an extended period of time. The approach may find application in medical, industrial, and consumer products and settings.

In future studies, the researchers aim to better understand the mechanisms involved in preventing biofilms. In particular, they are interested in whether any bacteria transiently attach to the interface and then slip off, if they just float above the surface, or if any individuals can remain loosely attached.

"Biofilms have been amazing at outsmarting us. And even when we can attack them, we often make the situation worse with toxins or chemicals. With some very cool, nature-inspired design tricks we are excited about the possibility that biofilms may have finally met their match," concludes Aizenberg.

Aizenberg and Epstein's coauthors included Rebecca A. Belisle, research fellow at SEAS, and Emily Marie Boggs '13, an undergraduate biomedical engineering concentrator at Harvard College. The authors acknowledge support from the Department of Defense Office of Naval Research; the Croucher Foundation; and the Wyss Institute for Biologically Inspired Engineering at Harvard University.

Eyes-On With AT&T?s Garnet Red Samsung Galaxy S III

Samsung?s Galaxy S III is one of the most important Android phones to launch this year, and with roughly 10 million already sold, it seems like Samsung has a certified hit on its hands. In its attempt to reach as many potential customers as possible, and to keep the S III experience as pure as possible for its customers, Samsung made sure that each carrier kept the same specs, look and feel of the phone.

There is just one difference, though. While Verizon, Sprint and T-Mobile got the Galaxy S III in Marble White and Pebble Blue, AT&T got access to an exclusive Garnet Red version of the S III. We?ve been playing with Marble White versions of the Verizon and Sprint S III?s and Pebble Blue versions of the T-Mobile and AT&T editions, but it?s the Garnet Red Galaxy S III that we?ve really been pining for.?

True, it?s nothing more than a pallet swap, but the Garnet Red S III feels more exotic than its plain Jane white and blue siblings. Beyond it?s red back and front panels, the S III?s edges are covered in a slick dark grey paint that helps the red pop. But the coolest part is that the soft-touch Menu and Back buttons on either side of the Home button light up in red. On the other S IIIs, the buttons light up in a cool white shade.

Over all, we prefer the Garnet Red S III to either the Marble White or Pebble Blue versions. But that?s just our opinion. Which would you choose?

Romney resume from 2002 in focus amid Olympic rift

(AP) ? On a trip already marked by misstep, Mitt Romney has an Olympic history that could prove problematic: His stewardship of the 2002 Winter Games in Salt Lake City was not without controversy.

Romney and his wife, Ann, are set to attend the opening ceremony at the Summer Games on Friday, an event that punctuates the first leg of a three-nation tour that will take him to Israel and Poland. It's the first international swing for the presumptive Republican presidential nominee, who has crafted an itinerary designed to showcase his diplomatic skills and political strengths.

The Olympic appearance carries special significance for Romney. His political career was born out of his leading role at the Salt Lake City Games, which were plagued by scandal before he was tapped to take over.

"I can't resist the pull of the beginning of the Olympics here," Romney told reporters Thursday. "My experience as an Olympic organizer is that there are always a few very small things that end up not going quite right in the first day or so ? these get ironed out and then when the games themselves begin and the athletes take over, all the mistakes of the organizing committee ? and I made a few ? all of those are overwhelmed by the many things that the athletes carry out and by the spirit of the games."

Romney's comments were aimed at downplaying his earlier suggestion that British officials might not be prepared to pull off a successful Olympics. In an interview with NBC News, he called London's problems with games preparation "disconcerting," and the remark sparked sharp responses from Britain's top officials.

Prime Minister David Cameron said Romney and other doubters would "see beyond doubt that Britain can deliver." London Mayor Boris Johnson told tens of thousands gathered in Hyde Park: "There's a guy called Mitt Romney who wants to know if we are ready. Are we ready? Yes, we are!"

Amid the uproar, Romney met privately with Cameron, afterward concluding, "I expect the games to be highly successful."

The negative attention distracted from Romney's push to highlight the U.S.-British bond and bolster his foreign policy credentials as he auditions for the world's most powerful elected office. The Olympic focus also brought fresh attention to his actions in Utah a decade ago.

"The country is in need of a turnaround. The Olympics was a turnaround," Romney told CNN in an interview broadcast as London slept early Friday morning. "The attacks that come by people who are trying to knock down my business career, or my Olympic experience, or our success, those attacks are not going to be successful."

Such attacks have been plentiful in recent months. Democrats and even some Republicans have criticized Romney for taking credit for the 2002 games' success while relying on federal funding to help cover costs as the Salt Lake Olympics sought to recover from financial mismanagement and corruption.

"One of the things he talks about most is how he heroically showed up on the scene and bailed out and resolved the problems of the Salt Lake City Olympic Games," Rick Santorum, now a Romney supporter, said in February when he opposed Romney for the GOP nomination. "He heroically bailed out the Salt Lake City Olympic Games by heroically going to Congress and asking them for tens of millions of dollars to bail out the Salt Lake Games ? in an earmark."

Romney took over the games in 1999 after its leaders were accused of sending money to members of the International Olympic Committee to help Salt Lake City win the games.

By Romney's account, the government spent about $600 million helping the Salt Lake Olympic Committee. An additional $1.1 billion was planned for projects like roads and bridges, infrastructure improvement projects that the government probably would have paid for eventually, though the timing of the games may have sped up the construction.

Romney has made himself the very public face of the effort, claiming that he personally cut millions from the budget, wooed major companies and won sponsorships himself and pulled the whole endeavor back from the brink of failure. His record in Salt Lake was the cornerstone of his run for governor in Massachusetts, a campaign he announced in March 2002, just weeks after the games concluded.

Romney, who promises to slash federal spending if elected president, rarely acknowledges the federal support for the 2002 games on the campaign trail. His aides say much of it was for increased security costs after the 2001 terrorist attacks, which occurred about five months earlier.

But Romney doesn't mention the commitments the government had already made to cover costs associated with the games ? or elaborate on his role in persuading congressional appropriators and critics to give the games more money.

In the 2004 book he wrote about the games, "Turnaround," Romney outlined how he revamped the Salt Lake Olympic Committee's lobbying operations in Washington. He directed plans to hire experienced transportation lobbyists and wooed congressional leaders.

In one instance, Romney highlights how he made arrangements for different states to send experienced bus drivers to Utah. He helped arrange to pay them union wages, he wrote in the book ? and he persuaded the federal government to pick up the tab.

One of the lessons he learned: "If you work at it long enough, there is always another way to get the help you need in Washington," he wrote.

In London, first lady Michelle Obama is also scheduled to appear at Friday's opening ceremony, in addition to other events. She and Romney are expected to avoid the same venues.

Romney said he would attend at least one event in addition to the opening ceremony. The family has a horse competing in an equestrian event known as dressage. But Romney told Britain's Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg that he would prefer to watch swimming.

Why?

"That's just what's been arranged. It fits in the schedule," Romney said. "Swimming is always fun, and Americans typically do well in swimming."

They loaded mortars in the war, so now what?

WASHINGTON (AP) ? U.S. combat troops patrol dusty pathways in Afghanistan, look for hidden roadside bombs, load and fire mortar shells at insurgents' positions. So when they come home, how will that help them land a civilian job?

They can "be a mercenary," muses Capt. John Rodriguez, who'll leave the Army soon after six years.

That's the kind of thinking the government wants to change, both among American employers and members of the armed forces. In fact, the skills troops use in combat can be useful for many types of civilian jobs, but employers often don't understand them and people leaving the military need help with presenting those skills or developing new ones.

Rodriguez was attending a recent resume-writing class, part of the Transition Assistance Program, which is run by the departments of Defense, Labor and Veteran Affairs to help soldiers, sailors, airmen and Marines successfully make the transition back to the civilian world.

Some 250,000 service members leave the military each year and all must attend counseling on finances and other issues whether they served six years or 26 years, whether they saw the battlefield or not. Other parts of the 20-year-old transition program have been voluntary, such as the resume-writing class and one on how to dress for the civilian workplace.

At the class Rodriguez attended, teacher Aleshia Thomas-Miller offered some tips for writing resumes that might help civilian employers understand what veterans did in Afghanistan and Iraq and how their experience translates to a nonmilitary job:

?Don't use military jargon or an alphabet soup of military acronyms. Even a job isn't called a job in the military; it's called an MOS, or military occupational specialty. That might fly in military circles, but in the civilian world, it's incomprehensible.

"It doesn't matter how qualified you are if the employer does not understand," she told the class of a dozen soldiers.

?If you were a platoon leader, as Rodriguez was in Afghanistan, don't use that term either, Thomas-Miller said. Say you managed 50 people, were responsible for expensive equipment, made decisions in stressful situations.

There's online help as well. At careeronestop.org and Mil2FedJobs.com, troops can type in their military occupation and get a list of related jobs, the states in which they're located and sometimes with a link to apply for the job online, depending on the program.

For instance, an 11C (an indirect fire infantryman who can supervise or serve on a mortar unit), might find one of 180 jobs in Illinois, driving trucks, running company training programs or working in security.

The vast majority of veterans are employed, but the jobless rate for the nation's new generation of veterans was 9.5 percent last month. That's down from 12.7 percent the previous month and 13.3 percent in June 2011, the Labor Department's Bureau of Labor Statistics said. But it's still been consistently higher than the country at large, with an unemployment rate of 8.2 percent in June, and for vets from all previous wars.

There are hundreds of jobs in the military ? for medics, computer specialists, mechanics, lawyers, finance officers, pilots, electrical engineers, nuclear engineers, food service managers, heavy equipment operators, and more. Though officials provided no data on who has the hardest time finding jobs after military service, many say it's infantrymen and those who held other jobs directly involved in combat that have no direct civilian equivalent.

President Barack Obama on Monday announced a redesign of the transition program. Starting later this year, assistance will begin earlier in a military career, rather than at the end. There will be more one-on-one help, a separate focus for those wanting to go back to school or start their own businesses. Classes will be five to seven days, rather than the current three and more things will be mandatory for most people.

The redesigned program will have a fancier new name ? Transition GPS. The administration is calling it the first major overhaul of a system started in the 1990s post-Cold War drawdown, though it's been updated in recent years to be more youth friendly with web-based information and workshops.

Acknowledging that troops already have some terrific experience, Defense Secretary Leon Panetta said the revised program will help them "apply their experience to additional training, formal education, and develop successful civilian careers."

A recent study by the Center for New American Security, a Washington think tank, said businesses want to hire new vets because they believe they have leadership qualities, teamwork skills, character, discipline, expertise, effectiveness and loyalty.

Envisioning how vets might fit into their company is a different matter, said the study, which included interviews with 87 unidentified businessmen representing 69 companies.

"The most prominent obstacle to hiring veterans," it said, is that "both civilians and members of the military have a hard time translating military skills into civilian job qualifications."

Employers also said their concerns include:

?That troops with post-traumatic stress disorder may be "damaged" or have violent tendencies.

?That National Guard and Reserve troops will be called up for duty, leaving the company short-handed.

?That the majority of post-9/11 vets lack the college degrees or industry-specific expertise they'd need for senior positions, yet don't want lower level jobs employers feel are more appropriate for them.

?That vets too often seek jobs that they don't have the education or skills to do.

"There are folks who get it, are coming out of the service and say 'I realize I'm not going to be CEO,'" said Devin B. Holmes, CEO of Warriorgateway.org, a portal to help troops find help with employment, health questions, education and a range of other transition needs.

"There are also folks coming out and (saying) 'I want a GS14 position in the government,'" Holmes said, meaning the second-highest level in the "General Schedule" of government pay ? jobs that go to people with a lot of experience and/or a very high level of expertise in their field, and are management positions.

"You can achieve that if you work hard and do a good job ... but you're not going to get it on Day One," Holmes said.

Officials say privately that part of the disconnect comes from a sense of entitlement among some troops, the feeling that they deserve a great job after doing duty that only a tiny fraction of Americans were willing to do. But Holmes said the larger reason is that troops lack an understanding of what some jobs entail and what experience and education is needed to get them ? a problem he thinks the Transition Assistance Program should work on.

6 writing tips for creating global content | Sajan Blog

As a professional writer you?re consistently challenged with creating content that appeals to a wide audience ? and it?s particularly challenging when your content is being translated into one or more languages.

As a language service provider, we?re consistently challenged to be the driving force behind the success of your company?s translated content. If we can?t get your copy to resonate with a foreign audience, who will?

While that?s generally true, there is also a part of multilingual content satisfaction that lies within the hands of the original author ? you.

If this comes as a surprise, you?re not alone. We?ve partnered with many global writers and marketers to show them how authoring with translation in mind fosters better content for global companies. So to help you out too, here are six writing tips for creating global content.

1.?????? Make your intentions obvious.

Be certain your global content has a clear, focused purpose. Whether you?re a technical writer explaining how a particular product works, or an advertising specialist sharing your company?s latest deals ? every message has a purpose that needs to trigger the desired response from your audience (no matter which market they?re in). If your content has multiple angles and purposes, it can make it difficult to translate into another language. If you make sure everyone has a clear understanding of what your content?s intention is, then translation won?t be an issue.

2.?????? Know your global audience.

Don?t lose the attention of your foreign audience by focusing too much on your in-country customer when creating copy. Those who purchase your products or read your materials abroad may not respond as positively to your messaging if it wasn?t created with their characteristics in mind. While it?s a language service provider?s job to tailor your message to a foreign audience, it?s best that you also have an understanding of the intended audience?s cultural profile so it comes across in your global content.

3.?????? Keep culture under consideration.

Always try to keep cultural, economic and societal specifics out of messaging that will require translation. These things, such as regional jargon, can make the translation process much more difficult for a translator (and more expensive and time-consuming for you). Another no-no is using your organization?s lingo or ?corporate culture speak?. Unless consumers already know your company and its specific terminology, they?re not going to understand your lingo. Instead, focus on making your messaging less regionally-constrictive and more universally adoptable.

4.?????? Don?t let creativity become a constriction.

Being a global marketer is a creative job, but if you overlook the fundamentals of writing and bend the rules too much it can be a hassle during translation. While creative copy may make sense to your in-country audience, the messaging may stray when presented in another language. Avoid this by creating more consistent global content. And if you think that will diminish the style of your messaging, look into transcreation ? a translation process that focuses more on tailoring your entire marketing strategy for a new foreign market.

?5.?????? Be open to reiterated messaging.

Many times marketers and global content creators start to feel like they are repeating themselves in the variety of global content they?ve created ? and this isn?t a bad thing. If your company?s communications have similarities, it helps keep messaging consistent and translation prices lower and more predictable. If you?re not using them already, look in to translation memory services which store your previously translated segments. Then when it?s time to translate new documents you can leverage the existing messages across the organization ? and avoid paying new word rates for something you?ve translated before.

6.?????? Use authoring tools to drive consistency.

If you have multiple authors creating content, it can be a struggle to keep messaging consistent. That?s why it?s important to create authoring tools which help your global marketing team keep messaging suited for translation. Creating style guides and glossaries lets your team know what terminology, style and usage should be used in any instance. These tools are also beneficial for your language service provider because they help your provider keep your messaging and style consistent when translating your content into a target language. For more on this topic, check out our blog post Style guides and glossaries: Critical tools to improve your translations.

These are just a few of the ways you can help create globally adaptable content well before it falls into the hands of your language service provider. If you?re looking for more ways to ensure translation quality while authoring global content, download our best practices brief Authoring for translations: Ensuring quality from the start.

Do you author content that is often translated? If so, what are some of the processes you use to author for international success?

Family near former dam fights to keep home | Consumer | Eugene ...

NEAR WHITE SALMON, Wash. - It was one of the most amazing displays of the power of water.

When workers punched a tunnel through the bottom of the century-old Condit Dam near White Salmon, Wash. last October water exploded downstream in a White Salmon River canyon at more than 11,000 cubic feet per second.

Behind the dam the now former Northwestern Lake emptied like a bath tub with the drain plug pulled, and the shoreline around the lake started crumbling away into the river. Thousands of tons of clay and sediment that built up over the past hundred-plus years just disappeared.

Several homes on the lake began to move as the earth below them disappeared, according to the owner of the land where the homes sit.

PacifiCorp, which rents the land to the homeowners, has condemned at least two homes and threatens to condemn another, because the company says the houses are in danger of sliding into the river.

The company's spokesman, Tom Gauntt, summed it up in four words: "It's just a safety issue," he told KATU. Gauntt went on to say, "We just want to make sure that nothing is going to happen to the structure or anyone in the structure."

A family that has owned one of the homes for almost 40 years doesn't believe their house is in jeopardy. They say the home and the property held up after the dam was breached and even after one of the wettest winters on record. Lance Cyphers told KATU's Thom Jensen, "We got hit hard with water (during the winter and spring) without redirecting any of it, and I think we're in good shape since we made it through that."

Cyphers, his father and his sister are now in a legal fight with PacifiCorp to save their home. They say they have been requesting documents from PacifiCorp that proves the home is in danger for more than eight months, but they say PacifiCorp has not provided a shred of paper as proof. Lance says, "They're a large corporation - and we're a small guy. You know? And - it's hard to know if you're getting the truth out of them."

The Cyphers family hired a geotechnical company named Terra Firma to do its own research. A staff member who secured other homes in danger behind the former dam says the Cypher home can be saved.

Chris Gordon says bedrock is only 10 to 15 feet below the home and that his workers can tie the foundation right into the bedrock. Gordon told KATU, "We're going to drive right down into the bedrock itself - and tie right into it." He said other homes, which have already been shored-up were in much more peril.

The Cyphers say it's worth the effort. Krista Lee Cyphers says there are too many memories to just give up the home, "It's hard to put into words what it means to us."

She added, "After all of the blood, sweat and tears that we put into this place - to not - to just lay down and let them have it would be foolish."

Lance and Krista's father, Lawrence Cyphers, told KATU, "I want the cabin fixed. I want to stay here. I've been coming up here all my life."

Lance says it was always the plan to keep the home in the family for generations to come. As he put it, "I want to save this place for the great grandkids that I am never going to meet."

The Cyphers have become suspicious, wondering why PacifiCorp wants their home. They asked if there could be an ulterior motive.

PacifiCorp's spokesman says it's just a safety issue, and that's it. He told KATU that experts determined the home wasn't safe, not PacfiCorp managers. Gauntt says, "The engineers and the geo-tech folks; that's their business to make those kinds of determinations of, you know, can this safely stay where it is."

The Cyphers say they?re still waiting for the proof from those experts, and they will continue to fight for their home.

Phone hack charges may add to fallout for Brit PM

LONDON (AP) ? Britain's phone hacking scandal entered a new and expanded criminal phase Tuesday, with charges brought against two former members of Prime Minister David Cameron's inner circle over a campaign of illegal espionage that has rocked the country's establishment.

The Crown Prosecution Service announced Tuesday that Andy Coulson and Rebekah Brooks ? both former editors of Rupert Murdoch's now-shuttered News of the World tabloid ? were among eight people being charged with conspiring to intercept the communications of at least 600 people between 2000 and 2006. The alleged victims included everyone from a murdered teenager to Hollywood power couple Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie.

Coulson and Brooks, who had previously been charged in related cases, have both denied any wrongdoing and vowed to fight the charges.

The charges may further embarrass Cameron, who hired Coulson as his chief communications adviser and once counted Brooks and her horse training husband Charlie in his circle of friends. The prime minister is Brooks' neighbor in the well-to-do Cotswolds town of Chipping Norton, and would swing by the News Corp. executive's house for Christmas parties, go horseback riding with her husband, and text her weekly.

The developing criminal investigation will shortly be overshadowed by the long-awaited London Olympics, but the prospect of having Cameron's former associates in the dock during lengthy trials could prove an unwelcome sideshow as the prime minister battles to get Britain's recession-scarred economy back on track.

"Of course we don't yet know what the outcome of these trials will be, but the fact that this is rumbling along is deeply unhelpful for a prime minister who is in some trouble," said Stephen Fielding, the director of the Center for British Politics at the University of Nottingham.

The long running scandal has spread beyond the Murdoch's News Corp., damaging the reputation of British journalists as well as politicians and police suspected of getting too cozy with the press.

Phone hacking first came to public attention in 2006, when police arrested private investigator Glenn Mulcaire and the News of the World's then-royal editor Clive Goodman on suspicion of hacking into the voicemails of members of Britain's royal household. Coulson quit as the tabloid's editor after the pair was convicted, but insisted he'd had no inkling of their wrongdoing.

For the next five years, the tabloid's owner, Murdoch's News Corp., would claim that the illegal activity was an aberration ? the work of single rogue reporter. But a stream of lawsuits as well as enterprising reporting by the Guardian and The New York Times eventually exposed a massive cover-up.

Prodded by the media, police reopened their investigation. At News Corp., stony denials turned into apologies sweetened with big settlements. Under pressure, Coulson stepped down from his job as Cameron's adviser.

Still, it wasn't until the Guardian revealed that the News of the World had hacked into the voicemail of 13-year-old Milly Dowler ? a school girl whose 2002 disappearance and murder transfixed the nation ? that the scandal really exploded. Britons who might've shrugged off intruding on celebrities' lives were horrified by the news that reporters had violated the privacy of a dead girl to hunt for scoops about her whereabouts.

The ensuing furor shook the British establishment like an earthquake.

Once so powerful that many referred to him as a permanent cabinet minister, Rupert Murdoch's influence in Britain crumbled, and politicians who once assiduously courted the Australian tycoon have rushed to distance themselves from him.

Meanwhile Murdoch has distanced himself ? and his son James ? from News Corp.'s British newspaper arm, News International. Murdoch has shut the News of the World, resigned from a series of directorships, and pulled James back to New York.

Three of Scotland Yard's top officers have resigned over their failure to get to grips with the scandal; dozens of journalists, media executives, and public figures have been arrested or resigned. The country's media regulator ? widely discredited by the scandal ? has been scrapped.

The saga has also tarnished the reputation of many whom, like British Olympics Secretary Jeremy Hunt, were sympathetic to News Corp.'s far-flung interests.

Among those charged Tuesday were some of the News of the World's best-known and most senior journalists. Prosecutors named Stuart Kuttner, Greg Miskiw, Neville Thurlbeck, James Weatherup and Ian Edmondson. Mulcaire, whose extensive notes have long been at the center of the scandal, is also being prosecuted.

Miskiw and Weatherup are accused of intercepting the messages of actor Jude Law, along with associates of his ex-wife Sadie Frost and former girlfriend Sienna Miller.

Edmondson and Weatherup are accused of spying on former Beatle Paul McCartney, his ex-wife Heather Mills, and politicians including former Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott. Thurlbeck and Weatherup, meanwhile, are alleged to have eavesdropped on associates of Jolie and Pitt, one of Hollywood's most famous couples.

Brooks, Coulson and Thurlbeck all promised Tuesday to fight the charges.

Brooks, who resigned as chief executive of News International after the Dowler story broke, said she was "distressed and angry." She called the allegation that she conspired to spy on Milly "particularly upsetting." Coulson insisted he would never have done anything to harm the investigation into Milly's disappearance.

Thurlbeck, meanwhile, said he would make it clear that he always acted "under the strict guidance and advice of News International's lawyers and under the instructions of the newspaper's editors."

The phone hacking fallout is far from finished.

As the charges were revealed, Justice Brian Leveson announced the end of his long-running inquiry into the culture and practices of Britain's press, which was set up in the wake of the hacking scandal. He said he would release his recommendations as soon as possible, although that is expected to be months from now.

Police also continue chasing leads.

Scotland Yard's Deputy Assistant Commissioner Sue Akers said Monday that detectives are seeking evidence from two newspaper companies that are rivals of Murdochs' and looking into more than 100 claims of computer hacking, improper access to medical records and other misconduct stemming from the scandal.
