'Facebook effect' sends a chill through IPO market

S&P is cutting its price target to $27 on Facebook, and the stock may be hurting the IPO market.

By Roland Jones

Facebook?s stock offering was supposed to jump start the broader IPO market.

It seems to have done the opposite.

After the No. 1 social network?s initial public offering went awry???losing hundreds of millions of dollars for individual investors and raising questions about the fairness of Wall Street stock offerings ? a number of other companies are putting their IPO plans on ice, worried that investors have a low appetite for investing in new stock offerings.

Online travel website Kayak.com is the latest high-profile name to delay its IPO. The company has reportedly postponed the roadshow for an offering, which was scheduled to start last week. Morgan Stanley, which hit the headlines as the lead bank for Facebook?s botched IPO, was due to lead Kayak?s IPO.

?There?s definitely some spillover from Facebook?s IPO to other Internet companies,? said Jay Ritter, a professor of finance at the University of Florida and an expert on IPOs.

?Social media stocks, in particular, have fared poorly since Facebook?s IPO,? he added, noting that Zynga, an online gaming site, has lost 18 percent of its value since May 18.?Daily coupon site Groupon has declined 4 percent since then, and it has lost over 50 percent of its value since it went public in November.

However, it?s important to keep the market impact of Facebook in perspective, Ritter said.

Facebook shares are now down about $10 from the initial offering price of $38. With 2.7 billion shares outstanding, that amounts to a $27 billion loss in value for Facebook since its IPO, he said. Individual investors only own about 15 percent of that amount he added -- a sum that?s a fraction of the $15 trillion aggregate value of the U.S. stock market.

David Menlow, president of the research firm IPOfinancial.com, reckons another factor contributing to the poor IPO market is companies looking to go public are distancing themselves from Morgan Stanley.

Kayak?s delayed offering follows the decision of another company with a Morgan Stanley-led IPO -- Tria Beauty, which sells cosmetics and other beauty products -- to postpone its offering. Tria cited market conditions, but these days that can be a euphemism for ?unable to get the right price in the market,? Menlow said.

?Ever since the Facebook IPO problem, which continues to plague the market, there has been a rash of uncertainty that any technology stock offering is going to get a valuation haircut,? he said.

A company that is looking to go public with a stock price between $14 and $16 may be told that their offering won?t get done at that level, Menlow explained. The company might be offered a range of between $10 and $12, or whatever is appropriate below the desired range, he said.

?Companies may be unwilling to take those numbers,? Menlow said. ?It might not be to their liking.?

Related: Valuation expert: Facebook has lower to go

Menlow also notes that some companies are launching stock offerings to pay off debt, and they may not want to accept a smaller potential gain from an offering, as it may mean a reduction in the amount of money they receive to service their debt obligations.

Stormy market conditions are also to blame for the chill in the IPO market, analysts say. The benchmark S&P 500 stock index is on pace for its worst monthly decline since September on increasing concern over the euro zone?s debt crisis and the strength of the U.S. economic recovery.

Ritter notes that, traditionally, the IPO pipeline has been hyper-sensitive to strong moves in the stock market, on both the downside and the upside.

?In the past, when the market has taken a downturn, the IPO market has dried up, and May has been a crummy month for stocks,? he said, noting that a dip in the aggregate value of U.S. stocks has wiped away $1 trillion dollars of investor wealth so far this month.

Cancer Genetics is a case in point, he said.

The biotechnology company, which develops genetic tests to detect cancer, filed plans in December for an estimated IPO of up to $50 million to fund research and development and to repay debt. It has since nixed those plans, noted Ritter, and the likely cause was the poor state of the market and not the Facebook debacle, he said.

Another company -- Loyalty Alliance Enterprise, which sells marketing solutions to businesses -- is unlikely to go ahead with its planned public offering, Ritter added. And on Thursday London-based Graff Diamonds said it will postpone its $1 billion IPO in Hong Kong due to poor market conditions.

?The decline in stock markets, especially in Europe, has definitely put a dampener on the IPO market,? he said.

The effect on businesses of a slowing IPO market can be significant, Ritter added.

Corporations go public to raise money to expand their businesses, and if they can?t do that they ultimately invest less and ultimately hire fewer people. Also, existing employees who want to sell their stock in the company won?t be able to -- six months later, when employees can cash in on so called ?restricted stock units.? Those employees might be thinking of buying a new home, or a car, he said.

Facebook?s IPO can be vital to California?s economy, Ritter said. The fiscally distressed state is expected to reap billions from the purchase of new homes, cars, and capital gains taxes from wealthy Facebook employees, he said.

Treatment helps paralyzed rats walk

Combination of drugs, electrical stimulation and therapy restores lost connections

Web edition : 2:07 pm

Scientists have trained paralyzed rats to walk, run and even climb stairs. Weeks of rigorous practice coupled with an electrochemical spine-stimulating regimen allowed the animals to overcome devastating spinal cord injuries that immobilized their rear legs, Swiss scientists report in the June 1 Science.

Although preliminary, the results offer hope to people paralyzed by spinal cord injuries. ?The really exciting thing, the take-home message for people living with spinal cord injuries, is that this represents yet another step towards real treatment,? says neurologist John McDonald of the Kennedy Krieger Institute in Baltimore and the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. ?The real beauty is that this is not something that would necessarily have to go through 10 years of FDA approval.?

Recovery, the Swiss team found, relied on a combination of treatments, all readily adaptable to humans: Nerve cells in the spine below the damaged site were stimulated with a cocktail of drugs similar to some antidepressants. Electrical shocks, delivered via electrodes, also activated the spine. In this way, the researchers primed the rats for the next stage of treatment ? learning to walk again.

A stabilizing robotic harness held each treated rat upright on its hind legs and kept it from tipping over sideways, a device that study coauthor Gr?goire Courtine of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne likens to two very strong physical therapists. The animals were then tempted with cheese and chocolate ? a situation that drove the rats to try very hard to move forward.

?The brain is maximally engaged and willing to do anything to reach its reward,? says Courtine. After several weeks of training, the formerly paralyzed rats began taking voluntary steps toward their treats. Astonished, Courtine says he and his colleagues kept pushing the rats to do more and more sophisticated voluntary movements. More training allowed the animals to run, climb stairs and even avoid obstacles in their paths. The stronger animals were even able to bear their entire body weight on their two back legs.

It turns out that motivation is crucial, and not just because the obstacles are so great. Prompted by a moving treadmill, rats that received the electrochemical treatment could put one foot in front of the other, but this kind of movement was automatic and didn?t involve the brain. Rats could walk voluntarily only when the training included the motivating treat.

Experiments on the animals? brains and spinal cords revealed that the nervous system had rewired itself in many different ways by sprouting detours around the injury site. Actively trained rats had new nerve fibers running from the brain down to the spinal cord. These rats also had changes far away from the injury site in the motor cortex, the part of the brain that controls leg movements. The brains of rats trained only on treadmills showed no changes in their brains.

The finding fits in with a growing realization that this sort of active rehabilitation ? in which a person is maximally engaged and that uses electrodes to stimulate paralyzed muscles ? works, McDonald says. McDonald used similar techniques to help actor Christopher Reeve regain some voluntary control over select muscles years after his spinal cord injury left him paralyzed.

Most spinal cord injuries in people result from severe bruising, which can leave some remaining tissue to bridge the spinal cord to the brain. The Swiss team studied rats with two staggered, incomplete snips to their spinal cords, which completely paralyzed the animals? hind legs but also left an island of intact spinal cord tissue between the damage sites and the brain.

The study raises some questions, such as whether the technique will work for the more common kind of bruise-induced injury, and whether other movements will also show an improvement. Fine hand or finger control, for instance, might require a different kind of training regimen, says neuroscientist Michael Beattie of the University of California, San Francisco. Balance may also require a different kind of training. Some of the more successful rats were able to walk a few steps on four legs, but quickly lost balance and fell over without the supportive harness.

The Swiss team?s success supports a more principled approach to treating spinal cord injuries, Beattie says. ?Most rehabilitation is done by, ?This should work.? There?s not a lot of evidence-based practice,? he says. The new study, he says, and others like it help scientists understand how rehabilitation can be optimized. ?It may be that people with severe injuries, if they get the right kind of treatment, can perform much better than we thought.?

Courtine and his colleagues are continuing to test their method. Preliminary results suggest that spine-stimulating drugs can be progressively tapered with no loss of benefits. And as part of a project called NeuWalk, Courtine and his colleagues are developing an electrical stimulator for humans. The team hopes to get safety approval for that device in the next two years.

Huge Ancient Civilization's Collapse Explained

The mysterious fall of the largest of the world's earliest urban civilizations nearly 4,000 years ago in what is now India, Pakistan, Nepal and Bangladesh now appears to have a key culprit ? ancient climate change, researchers say.

Ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia may be the best known of the first great urban cultures, but the largest was the Indus or Harappan civilization. This culture once extended over more than 386,000 square miles (1 million square kilometers) across the plains of the Indus River from the Arabian Sea?to the Ganges, and at its peak may have accounted for 10 percent of the world population. The civilization developed about 5,200 years ago, and slowly disintegrated between 3,900 and 3,000 years ago ? populations largely abandoned cities, migrating toward the east.

"Antiquity knew about Egypt and Mesopotamia, but the Indus civilization, which was bigger than these two, was completely forgotten until the 1920s," said researcher Liviu Giosan, a geologist at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution in Massachusetts. "There are still many things we don't know about them." [Photos: Life and Death of Ancient Urbanites]

Nearly a century ago, researchers began discovering numerous remains of Harappan settlements along the Indus River and its tributaries, as well as in a vast desert region at the border of India and Pakistan. Evidence was uncovered for sophisticated cities, sea links with Mesopotamia, internal trade routes, arts and crafts, and as-yet undeciphered writing.

"They had cities ordered into grids, with exquisite plumbing, which was not encountered again until the Romans," Giosan told LiveScience. "They seem to have been a more democratic society than Mesopotamia and Egypt ? no large structures were built for important personalitiess like kings or pharaohs."

Like their contemporaries in Egypt and Mesopotamia, the Harappans, who were named after one of their largest cities, lived next to rivers.

"Until now, speculations abounded about the links between this mysterious ancient culture and its life-giving mighty rivers," Giosan said.

Now Giosan and his colleagues have reconstructed the landscape of the plain and rivers where this long-forgotten civilization?developed. Their findings now shed light on the enigmatic fate of this culture.

"Our research provides one of the clearest examples of climate change leading to the collapse of an entire civilization," Giosan said. [How Weather Changed History]

The researchers first analyzed satellite data of the landscape influenced by the Indus and neighboring rivers. From 2003 to 2008, the researchers then collected samples of sediment from the coast of the Arabian Sea into the fertile irrigated valleys of Punjab and the northern Thar Desert to determine the origins and ages of those sediments and develop a timeline of landscape changes.

"It was challenging working in the desert ? temperatures were over 110 degrees Fahrenheit all day long (43 degrees C)," Giosan recalled.

After collecting data on geological history, "we could reexamine what we know about settlements, what crops people were planting and when, and how both agriculture and settlement patterns changed," said researcher Dorian Fuller, an archaeologist with University College London. "This brought new insights into the process of eastward population shift, the change towards many more small farming communities, and the decline of cities during late Harappan times."

Some had suggested that the Harappan heartland received its waters from a large glacier-fed Himalayan river, thought by some to be the Sarasvati, a sacred river of Hindu mythology. However, the researchers found that only rivers fed by monsoon rains flowed through the region.

Previous studies suggest the Ghaggar, an intermittent river that flows only during strong monsoons, may best approximate the location of the Sarasvati. Archaeological evidence suggested the river, which dissipates into the desert along the dried course of Hakra valley, was home to intensive settlement during Harappan times.

"We think we settled a long controversy about the mythic Sarasvati River," Giosan said.

Initially, the monsoon-drenched rivers the researchers identified were prone to devastating floods. Over time, monsoons weakened, enabling agriculture and civilization to flourish along flood-fed riverbanks for nearly 2,000 years.

"The insolation ? the solar energy received by the Earth from the sun ? varies in cycles, which can impact monsoons," Giosan said. "In the last 10,000 years, the Northern Hemisphere had the highest insolation from 7,000 to 5,000 years ago, and since then insolation there decreased. All climate on Earth is driven by the sun, and so the monsoons were affected by the lower insolation, decreasing in force. This meant less rain got into continental regions affected by monsoons over time." [50 Amazing Facts About Earth]

Eventually, these monsoon-based rivers held too little water and dried, making them unfavorable for civilization.

"The Harappans were an enterprising people taking advantage of a window of opportunity ? a kind of "Goldilocks civilization," Giosan said.

Eventually, over the course of centuries, Harappans apparently fled along an escape route to the east toward the Ganges basin, where monsoon rains remained reliable.

"We can envision that this eastern shift involved a change to more localized forms of economy ? smaller communities supported by local rain-fed farming and dwindling streams," Fuller said. "This may have produced smaller surpluses, and would not have supported large cities, but would have been reliable."

This change would have spelled disaster for the cities of the Indus, which were built on the large surpluses seen during the earlier, wetter era. The dispersal of the population to the east would have meant there was no longer a concentrated workforce to support urbanism.

"Cities collapsed, but smaller agricultural communities were sustainable and flourished," Fuller said. "Many of the urban arts, such as writing, faded away, but agriculture continued and actually diversified."

These findings could help guide future archaeological explorations of the Indus civilization. Researchers can now better guess which settlements might have been more significant, based on their relationships with rivers, Giosan said.

It remains uncertain how monsoons will react to modern climate change. "If we take the devastating floods that caused the largest humanitarian disaster in Pakistan's history as a sign of increased monsoon activity, than this doesn't bode well for the region," Giosan said. "The region has the largest irrigation scheme in the world, and all those dams and channels would become obsolete in the face of the large floods an increased monsoon would bring."

The scientists detailed their findings online May 28 in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Focused Distortion: Movie Review: 11-11-11

Synopsis: After the tragic death of his wife and child, famed American author Joseph Crone travels from the United States to Barcelona, Spain to reunite with his estranged brother and dying father. However, fate has a different plan for Joseph as his life becomes plagued with strange happenings, and the constant sightings of the number 11. Curiosity quickly turns to obsession, and Joseph soon realizes that this number holds a horrific meaning not only to himself but possibly to all of religion. Joseph soon realizes that 11/11/11 is more than just a date, it's a WARNING.

Here's another warning: the only scares in this movie are few and far between and the plot is just silly.

I think I know what happened here... some Hollywood executives got together and decided the date 11/11/11 (which is actually 11/11/2011... 11/11/11 happened 2000 years ago) would be a cool gimmick for a movie, so they had Darren Lynn Bousman throw a script together in about 11 minutes and said "let's open it in theaters on 11/11/11 (again... that was actually 2000 years ago) and presto, we get this film that really didn't even need the gimmick of the number 11 and it would have been the same. It's trying to be a horror movie as well but there's just absolutely only a few jump scares or creepy horror to speak of. It could have had some fun with the whole religious angle but failed there too.

It's just a total fail.

Go watch The Number 23 then watch The Omen and smash them together and imagine them much more laborious and dull. It's predictable as it flows right through to a silly ending and by that point I'd quite caring and was checking the run time.

Interesting concept and premise at least, but it'll be 11/11/2111 before I try to watch this again I think.

(AP) ? The debt crisis that has ravaged Europe for the best part of three years has exposed a dislike of the single currency but little desire to abandon it, a wide-ranging survey of public opinion found Tuesday.

Pew Research Center's survey across eight European Union countries, including five members of the 17-country eurozone, indicated that the region's financial problems have triggered full-blown fears about the future of Europe as a political project.

"This crisis of confidence is evident in the economy, in the future, in the benefits of European economic integration, in EU membership, in the euro and in the free market system," Pew said in a statement accompanying its survey.

Despite those concerns, Pew found there was no desire for those countries that use the euro to return to their former currencies, such as the French franc or the Spanish peseta.

In Greece, the epicenter of the debt crisis, 71 percent of those polled want to keep the euro, as against to 23 percent that want to return to the drachma. More people in Greece, which is now in its fifth year of a savage recession, think the euro has been good for them than bad ? 46 percent of those surveyed compared to 26 percent who thought it was a bad thing.

These findings may be crucial as Greece heads to the polls on June 17 in a general election many see as a referendum on the country's euro membership.

Though Pew found little appetite for abandoning the euro, the survey revealed a prevailing skepticism over Europe's single currency, which launched in 1999 and is now used by 17 countries.

More people in France, Italy and Spain think the euro has been more damaging than beneficial. In Italy, which has the second-highest debt burden in the eurozone after Greece, 44 percent of those people surveyed said the euro has been a bad thing, as opposed to 30 percent who think it has done good. Italy is also home to the biggest anti-euro constituency, with 40 percent of those polled wanting to return to the lira as against to 52 percent backing the euro.

Among the five euro countries surveyed there wasn't one where a majority ? over 50 percent ? of those polled thought the currency has been beneficial.

In Germany, Europe's biggest economy, more people thought it was beneficial than damaging. This can be seen as an acknowledgement that the country's exporters have benefited from the relatively low value of the euro against other key currencies such as the dollar when compared to what the deutschmark would likely be trading at.

The survey also found that two-thirds of Germans want to keep the currency even though the country has to make the biggest contributions to the financial bailouts.

Among the countries surveyed that did not have the euro as their currency there were big majorities in Britain, the Czech Republic and Poland who thought it has been better for them not to have been in the euro bloc.

The surveys were conducted by telephone in some countries and face-to-face in others between mid-March and mid-April, with at least 1,000 people surveyed in each country. The margin of error varied by country, from 3.3 percent to 4.4 percent.

IDENTITY THEFT SWAMPS TAMPA BAY FLORIDA WITH TAX ...

Tampa Bay, Pinellas and Miami, Florida have become the epicenter of identity theft tax fraud with thieves stealing social security numbers, then using the information to file fake taxes and to take the tax refund in the form of an IRS credit card. Some argue that the IRS is at fault for making it all too easy to accomplish the crime by sending out immediate tax refunds as credit cards before doing any kind of factual or mathematical examination of the tax forms.
By the time the IRS gets around to verifying the validity of information the money is long gone and at least at this point sadly, I must report that not one dime of it has made it into the willing hands of your favorite Clearwater Criminal Defense Attorney.
The only benefit appears to be that some violent criminals in Florida have traded their guns for laptops giving up doing violent crime for the lucrative, easier and safer pursuit of fake tax refunds fueled by furious acts of identity theft.
One wonders if it'd be easier just to pay criminals not to do violent crime? Happily, this experiment is moving forward with CBS more or less launching a national tutorial on how to conduct tax fraud identity theft crime?and Forbes donning identity theft as a fun in the sun?Florida vacation crime.
Yet?the mournful NYT noted that postal workers have been beaten and one was even killed by Florida tax fraudsters who wanted the postal workers master pass key to gain access to the credit cards being sent to millions of folks across the country from the IRS, apparently to everyone in the United States who is not a?Largo Criminal Defense Lawyer.

U.S. investors will keep tabs on Greece, U.S. jobs picture

By Myra P. Saefong, MarketWatch

SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) ? A fresh measure of U.S. job growth will grab next week?s spotlight in the financial markets, but that will compete for investor attention with Greece?s potential exit from the euro zone.

MarketWatch Week Ahead: Key jobs data, auto sales

Coming up next week: the all-important May jobs report, and AllThingsDigital's D10 conference will host Apple CEO Tim Cook. Laura Mandaro has details on Markets Hub. Photo: Getty Images.

?We are hostage again to what goes on in Europe,? said Michael Gayed, chief investment strategist at Pension Partners LLC. ?While better economic data in the U.S. next week might bolster risk sentiment, it likely will not be enough to get rid of the dark clouds forming over the euro zone.?

The technology sector, meanwhile, will also be in the spotlight as some of the market?s biggest names will be gathering at the D10 All Things Digital conference that begins Tuesday. Separately, retailers and the auto industry are scheduled to report their latest sales figures.

European Union leaders failed to come up with a new strategy for Greece during an informal meeting on Wednesday. Dueling views about defusing the Greek crisis as well as the growing economic weakness in Europe have been a rising worry in global markets.

Greece leaving the euro zone ?would erode confidence and lead to bank runs in Greece, Spain and Italy, which could easily explode the world over,? said Keith Springer, president of Springer Financial Advisors in Sacramento, Calif.

U.S. economic data released in the past week were mostly upbeat, however, showing increases in sales of new and existing homes, an unexpected rise in durable-goods orders and a climb in the consumer sentiment index to its highest level since October 2007. Read more on consumer sentiment.

Against that backdrop, the Dow Jones Industrial Average /quotes/zigman/627449 DJIA -0.60% ?closed at 12,454.83, down 0.6% on Friday, but up 0.7% for the week.

The Nasdaq Composite /quotes/zigman/123127 COMP -0.07% ?fell 0.1% to end at 2,837.53, tacking on 2.1% from a week ago. The S&P 500 /quotes/zigman/3870025 SPX -0.22% ?climbed 0.2% to finish at 1,317.82, up 1.7% for the week. Read about Friday?s stock market action.

?There are few safe havens left to absorb scared capital.?

Michael Gayed, Pension Partners LLC

?The biggest issue for markets in the very near-term is addressing whether the fear being expressed in the bond markets will filter through to equities with a lag,? said Gayed. ?While markets have bounced off of deeply oversold levels, the problem is that there is little confirmation in other areas of the investible universe.? Read about Friday?s bond market.

?The euro seems to be unable to catch a bid, emerging markets continue to weaken, 30-year Treasurys remain at panic levels, and sectors which are not cyclically sensitive continue to outperform,? he said.

?There are few safe havens left to absorb scared capital,? Gayed said. And strength in the dollar, which rose Friday to its highest level since 2010, ?is a reflection of European confidence weakness.? Read about Friday?s action in currencies.

?Pageant of uglies?

Overall, the U.S. markets were roiled this past week by what Springer referred to as ?yet another edition of the living Greek tragedy.?

(AP Photo/NASA)

(AP) ? The private company SpaceX made history Friday with the docking of its Dragon capsule to the International Space Station, the most impressive feat yet in turning routine spaceflight over to the commercial sector.

It marked the first time a business enterprise delivered a supply ship to the space station.

"There's so much that could have gone wrong and it went right," said an elated Elon Musk, the young, driven billionaire behind SpaceX.

"This really is, I think, going to be recognized as a significantly historical step forward in space travel ? and hopefully the first of many to come."

SpaceX still has to get its Dragon back next week with a load of science gear; the retro bell-shaped capsule is designed to splash down into the ocean, in the style of the Mercury, Gemini and Apollo programs. But Friday was the crucial step, Musk noted, and NASA agreed the next SpaceX mission could come as early as September.

After a three-day flight from Cape Canaveral, the Dragon closed in on the space station as two control centers ? NASA in Houston and SpaceX in Hawthorne, Calif. ? worked in tandem. A problem with the capsule laser-tracking system prompted SpaceX controllers to order a temporary retreat, but the problem quickly was resolved.

NASA astronaut Donald Pettit used the space station's 58-foot robot arm to snare the gleaming white Dragon as the two craft soared 250 miles above Australia, a day after a practice fly-by.

"Looks like we've got us a dragon by the tail," Pettit announced once he locked onto Dragon's docking mechanism.

NASA's dressed-up controllers applauded. In contrast, their SpaceX counterparts ? including Musk ? lifted their arms in triumph and jumped out of their seats to exchange high fives.

The company's youthful-looking employees ? the average age is 30 ? were still in a frenzy when Musk took part in a televised news conference a couple hours later. They screamed with excitement as if it were a pep rally and chanted, "E-lon, E-lon, E-lon," as the 40-year-old Musk, wearing a black athletic jacket with the SpaceX logo, described the day's events.

Alcohol was banned from the premises during the crucial flight operation, Musk noted, "but now that things are good, I think we'll probably have a bit of champagne and have some fun." The crowd roared in approval.

Although cargo hauls have become routine, Friday's linkup was significant in that an individual company pulled it off. That chore was previously reserved for a small, elite group of government agencies.

Not only that, the reusable SpaceX Dragon is designed to safely return items, a huge benefit that disappeared with NASA's space shuttles. It is the first U.S. craft to visit the station since the final shuttle flight last summer.

"I think you know it, but you made history today," NASA Administrator Charles Bolden told the space station astronauts and everyone else involved in Friday's docking. "It was an effort that will revolutionize the way we carry out space exploration."

NASA provided seed money for SpaceX ? $381 million going into Tuesday's launch, a small portion of the more than $1 billion that the company has invested in the effort.

Two hours after the capture, the crew attached the Dragon to the space station as the congratulations poured in.

"Everyone who is working to push forward the space frontier recognizes that such a mission is a massive challenge, and I join the world in lauding this important accomplishment," said Richard Branson of Virgin Galactic, a space tourism company that is holding a seat for Musk aboard its SpaceShipTwo.

"Nearly 43 years after we first walked on the moon, we have taken another step in demonstrating continued American leadership in space," said Apollo 11's Buzz Aldrin, the second man to step onto the moon.

The capsule? 19 feet tall and 12 feet across ? is carrying 1,000 pounds of supplies on this unprecedented test flight. The crew starts unpacking Saturday and will have just under a week to unload the food, clothes and other contents.

After this test flight, SpaceX ? officially known as Space Exploration Technologies Corp. ? has a contract to make a dozen delivery runs. It is one of several companies vying for NASA's cargo business and a chance to launch Americans from U.S. soil.

Rival Orbital Sciences Corp. is shooting for its own supply run by year's end.

President Barack Obama is pushing commercial ventures in orbit so NASA can concentrate on grander destinations like asteroids and Mars. Obama's chief scientific adviser, John Holdren, called Friday's linkup "an achievement of historic scientific and technological significance."

"It's essential we maintain such competition and fully support this burgeoning and capable industry to get U.S. astronauts back on American launch vehicles as soon as possible," Holdren said in a statement.

Without the shuttle, NASA astronauts must go through Russia, an expensive and embarrassing situation for the U.S. after a half-century of orbital self-sufficiency. Once companies master supply runs, they hope to tackle astronaut ferry runs.

Musk, who founded SpaceX a decade ago and helped create PayPal, said he can have astronauts riding his Dragon capsules to orbit in three or four years. He also runs the electric car company Tesla Motors.

The space station has been relying on Russian, Japanese and European cargo ships for supplies ever since the shuttles retired. None of those, however, can bring anything of value back; they're simply loaded with trash and burn up in the atmosphere.

The space station's six-man crew will release the Dragon on Thursday after filling it with science experiments and equipment. It will aim for the Pacific Ocean just off the California coast.

"At the beginning of the launch, I said there were a thousand things that had to go right," said Alan Lindenmoyer, manager of NASA's commercial crew and cargo program. "Well, there still are several hundred left. But I am very confident we'll get through it. ... Today this really is the beginning of a new era in commercial spaceflight"

Interactive CBT Certification Training Courses In MCSA Network ...

If you are ready to gain acknowledged certifications at the Microsoft Certified Systems Administrator study level, the best devices around are for computer based interactive training. So if you are a professional but are ready to formalise your skill set, or are new to network support, you will be able to choose from technologically advanced MCSA courses to cater for you. Each scenario requires a specialised course, so ensure you?re being offered the best one when making a start. Look for an organisation that has the courtesy to understand what you?re looking to do, and will work with you to sort out where you can go, well before they advise on a course.

It?s not uncommon for companies to offer inclusive exam guarantees ? they always involve paying for the exam fees up-front, at the start of your training. However, prior to embracing a course with such a promise, why not think about this:

Everyone knows they?re still footing the bill for it ? it?s obviously been inserted into the overall price charged by the course provider. It?s absolutely not free (although some people will believe anything the marketing companies think up these days!) We all want to pass first time. Taking your exams progressively in order and paying for them just before taking them sees you much better placed to get through first time ? you revise thoroughly and are mindful of the investment you?ve made.

Take your exams as locally as possible and look for the very best offer you can at the time. What?s the point in paying early for examination fees when you don?t need to? Huge profits are made by companies charging upfront for all their exams ? and hoping either that you won?t take them, or it will be a long time before you do. In addition to this, you should consider what an ?exam guarantee? really means. The majority of organisations will not pay for re-takes until you can prove to them you?re ready to pass.

With average Prometric and VUE examinations in the United Kingdom costing around 112 pounds, by far the best option is to pay for them as you take them. There?s no sense in throwing away maybe a thousand pounds extra at the start of your studies. A commitment to studying and the use of authorised exam preparation tools are actually the key to your success.

A fatal Faux-Pas that we encounter all too often is to focus entirely on getting a qualification, and not focus on the end result they want to achieve. Universities are full of direction-less students who chose a course based on what sounded good ? instead of what would yield their end-goal of a job they enjoyed. You may train for one year and then end up performing the job-role for decades. Don?t make the mistake of choosing what sounds like an ?interesting? course and then spend decades in a job you hate!

Spend some time thinking about earning potential and whether you?re an ambitious person or not. This will influence which particular accreditations you will need and what?ll be expected of you in your new role. Have a conversation with someone who has a commercial understanding of the realities faced in the industry, and could provide an in-depth explanation of what to expect in that role. Getting to the bottom of all this long before commencement of any learning programme will prevent a lot of wasted time and effort.

Any program that you?re going to undertake has to build towards a nationally accepted accreditation at the finale ? and not some unimportant ?in-house? plaque for your wall. You?ll find that only recognised certification from the top companies like Microsoft, Adobe, Cisco and CompTIA will have any meaning to employers.

The way in which your courseware is broken down for you isn?t always given the appropriate level of importance. How many stages do they break the program into? What is the specific order and at what speed is it delivered? A release of your materials piece by piece, according to your own speed is the usual method of releasing your program. This sounds logical, but you should consider these factors: What would happen if you didn?t finish every section at the required speed? And maybe you?ll find their order of completion won?t fit you as well as an alternative path could be.

In all honesty, the perfect answer is to have a copy of their prescribed order of study, but make sure you have all of your learning modules right from the beginning. It?s then all yours in the event you don?t complete everything at their required pace.
