Hi everyone I hope you?re having a great summer and getting ready to hit the road, go to the beach, or just lounge around the neighborhood and go visit your favorite neighbors. Summer is a great time for BBQs, going on family vacations, and enjoyable summer nights. It can also be a time for massive sweating, heat strokes, and gulping lots of H20. So here a few basics to help make the summer enjoyable and stay healthy.
Tips for staying cool and having a great summer:
- Remember to stay well hydrated during this hot summer season and make sure that you?re consuming an adequate amounts of fluids. The Institute of Medicine determined that an adequate intake for men is about 3 litters (13 cups) and 2.2 litters for women (about 9 cups) of beverages a day. Remember to listen to your body to determine your needs.
- Don?t drown your body with sugary drinks. It is easy to feel thirsty and grab a soda or bottle of juice. Remember that many of these beverages are filled with tons of sugar and when you?re thirsty it may be easier to grab and consume these types of beverages.
- Summer is a great time for kids, so to make it a safe summer make sure to always keep an eye for any dangers. 2010 was a record year for deaths for children left in hot cars with 49 deaths1. Avoid leaving your kids in the car and be sure to always double check.
- Schedule your fitness training and practice times in slots where the temperature will be cooler. Early mornings and evenings seem to work best. Remember you don?t have to train in the hot sun to train hard.
- If you didn?t hit your weight loss goals then don?t worry. Summer is a great time to get in shape and don?t let anyone or any opinions stop you from doing so.
Summer Foods To Keep You Cool
Watermelon is such a refreshing and delicious fruit that I had to mention it. In Chinese herbology it is known as Xi Gua (pronounced SHEE-GWAH) and has the ability to keep the body hydrated and generate fluids.
According to the Southern Carolina Department of Agriculture, watermelon is a good source of vitamin A and C, vitamin B1, and vitamin B6. Even the seeds are an excellent source of fat and protein. Watermelon is also a high source of lycopene, which gives watermelon it?s red color and has been linked to having significant potential of preventing disease2. So to beat the heat and stay cool try grabbing a slice of watermelon.
Salads can be a great summertime food as well. I usually consume salads with some time of warm tea (chrysanthemum tea works well in the summer), balancing the warm with the cold. Especially during summer you want to keep things light and this is a perfect way to do it.
I don?t know what it is but summer seems to be the time that most people enjoy. Maybe cause it?s associated with recess, vacation, and beach fun, or maybe it?s just the timing of the year. Whatever the case may be, go out and make it an enjoyable one!
