Do you believe in happy-ever-after endings? Do you feel that romantic relationships on TV are a realistic portrait of martial relationships in real-life?
Expectations for marriage come from observations of other married couples, family life, past relationships. A study published in Mass Communication and Society last September illustrates that television may also play a large role in how people view their marriage and their spouse. In a study that ?took place at Albion College, 392 married individuals were surveyed and analyzed based on their television-viewing habits, belief of? martial relationships on television, and expectations for their marriage. They found that participants who believed that romantic relationships on TV happen in real life are less committed to their own marriage which means they are more likely to cheat and end the marriage. Participants who believed relationships on TV are realistic measured their own relationship ?costs? as higher than those who did not believe that TV portrayals are realistic. Jeremy Osborn, study author and assistant professor of communications at Albion explains that relationship costs include increased emphasis on partner?s unattractive qualities, and loss of personal time.
This is the first study to evaluate how attitudes towards on-screen romantic relationships can affect people?s own marriage. Previous research has been done that strengthens the argument that television viewing relates to the general perceptions of marriage and romance. In a study published in 2006 in the Journal of Communication, researchers found that college students who watched an abundance of romantic-themed shows are more likely than students that watch fewer shows to believe that their partners would be able to read their minds and know their innermost feelings and that their wedding day will be the most joyful day of their life. Osborn hopes that his research will help couples who have watched too many romantic-themed shows face reality and set reasonable expectations for their relationships.
